If you are running Windows XP/ME/NT make sure you have downloaded the patch from windowsupdate.com to avoid getting this virus.

I got up this morning and this pc had restarted itself - thought maybe we'd had a power outage or something - then 30 mins later it did it again.

2 hours later and norton antivirus was going nuts on this pc flashing up warnings about having detected the worm virus, and more warnings saying it couldn't quarrantine it, couldn't repair it, couldn't access the file.

Many hours later we've now had the symantec msblast worm removal tool run through twice (as per recommendation) and the windows patch downloaded and installed, and all seems fine - but if you can avoid it all - do so - it is a bloody pain in the arse!

here is the link to the tool:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html

I got it, searched on Google for a fix immediately and had it cleaned up within the hour.

August 16 shoudl be fun though, when each infected computer is supposed to be launching an attack on Microsoft sites.

My computer at work had that! was the most annoying thing! my computer kept resetting every 2 min until FINALY someone came to fix it at 4

We currently have that going around at Uni.
The computers were really slow.

It is the new XP bug.

Just finished running around to everyones PC at work and updating the microsoft patch - seemed like half the staff had it by about 9:30am this morning

I bloody got it and I dont know how.

Everytime I connected I was given 45 secs to save my work.

So do you only need to download the patch? or is there something else you need to do? my mum has it and has no idea haha

I wasn't sure if we had the patch, I know we just downloaded a whole bunch of updates so I wasn't sure and downloaded it again and read that site very carefully (thanks Danni!) and I haven't had any problems and everything seems to be fine.

I know a few people who've had it though and not even realised!!!!

Well I use bigpond, therefore I presume the majority of Bigpond users who have XP got it.

I know a few people who got and dont know how.

It really is an annoying worm. Luckily it didnt stuff any of my data on my hd.

Yep i got the stupid thing last night. I didnt know how to fix it, so i just took it to the computer and got them to fix it.

Well, I spoke too soon.

My laptop is actually dual-boot, running Linux RedHat 9 and Windows XP. I generally refuse to use Windoze, for many varied reasons - not the least of which is the susceptibility to viruses - but on occasion I do have need to deal with that buggy, poorly-written, sad excuse for an operating system.

Today I had to transfer some files from the lappy to the network, and it just so happened that the files reside under Windows, so I plug in the network cable and fired up the FTP client.

Within 30 minutes the machine had rebooted. "That's odd", I thought, and logged back in. 30 minutes later, it rebooted again.

I have to hand it to this virus - I am amazed. I do not use Windows shyteware for email or browsing the net. I was only attached to the network for a few minutes. And in that short period of time, this virus has found my IP address and forcibly transferred itself to my machine. I am genuinely impressed.

Not coincidentally, the sysadmins had been advertising patches for this virus earlier today. I downloaded the patch, ran it, ran the antivirus software - twice. To be safe, I found where the virus had installed its .exe file and deleted it, and even hacked the Windows registry file to fix it.

So look out folks, not even us Linux users are safe! :(

How glad/lucky am I? About a month ago, I attempted to replace my Windows 98 with XP Pro. It all became too difficult for my luddite mind, so I gave up and uninstalled XP. Phew.

Great piece of laziness/incompetence by Gates. Release software and get your customers to do the quality control.

I still cna't work out what people have against Windows so much??

I always hear people go on about Linux and Unix and so on, adn talk about all the bugs in Windows.......

And how have people picked up this MSBlast virus?? how does it get through your internet line if you haven't downloaded it?? I'm trying to find it on the computer now, but it looks like I don't have it.....

Ah hah!!! I suspected you might be geeky :D

I only installed Windoze2000 for the first time a couple of weeks ago, oh goody.

At least my ISP are on the ball and emailed the link for the patch.
