Okay, heres the deal.

One day, I sat down and tried to log on to MSN Messenger as per usual. Lo and behold, I receive an error message stating:
"Sorry, we could not sign you in because the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect.
If you have forgotten your password, please click Help in the main messenger window, and then click Help Topics for instructions n resetting your password. 0x81000303"

So, I've tried the Help Topics to find that I get "Cannot connect to server" messages. I try all the guidelines to fixing this problem, and I fired off an email to my ISP to ask them about the proxy settings and such.

Then, I ask a close friend earlier tonight to try and log in on their computer - no problems. I asked them to change my PW and then I tried that and I still cannot connect.

I've tried reinstalling and such, but to no avail.

Please help? :(

I downloaded messenger 6.1 tonight, tried to log in and it kept signing me in then straight out again. After a few attempts I re-started the computer, but the same thing happened. In the end I just gave up, did a system restore and am ignoring the messages to update to 6.1.

Do you have Windows XP? If so just use Windows Messenger for the time being and see if that works. If Windows Messenger does work you know its MSN 6 which is causing you trouble.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion. When I was using MSN Messenger on Windows 2000, I was suffering similar problems to what has been mentioned. Eventually, I got sick of it and installed Windows XP.

And, when I switched to XP, everything turned fine and dandy ;)

Ah, problem. Window Messenger doesn't work either.

You could try emailing them if you want to. There serive is very fast (for hotmail I know that) You'll get a good responce by tomorrow morning Id think.

Yeah, I tried sending a Customer Support form in but I got a Cannot Connect to Server message.

I'm outta ideas. I might try and get on to MSN again.

Try uninstalling both Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. You get rid of MSN messenger through the add/remove programs box on the control panel.

To remove Windows Messenging, click on Start Run then in the Open box type

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Once they both unistalled, reinstall them again. Windows Messenging can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp while MSN messenger can be downloaded from http://messenger.msn.com

You need Windows Messnging in order to be able to do some of the more advanced stuff on MSN messenger.

From the Microsoft site

There could be several reasons why you are unable to sign into .NET Messenger Service.

Try the following:

If your Passport is not recognized, go to a Passport site (http://www.passport.com or http://www.hotmail.com) sign in, and make sure you are recognized there. If you are recognized there but still can't sign into .NET Messenger Service, the messaging servers could be temporarily down for maintenance or may have reached capacity due to heavy Internet traffic (during peak usage hours). Wait a short while, and then try again. You can check our server status page for the latest information on the service.

You may also want to:

Disable your 'auto-detect' settings on your browser. For Internet Explorer users, click the IE Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and then clear the 'Automatically Detect Settings' box.

Check for a false proxy setting. On the MSN Messenger Tools menu, click Options. On the Connection tab, be sure the 'I use a proxy server' check box is clear. This option should only be selected if your network administrator tells you to do so.

If this doesn't help, let me know if the first error message is still the one you get and secondly what operating system you are using.

When I click on the sign in box on the passport site, I get a blank screen with Done in the Status Bar.

When I tried on Hotmail I just get a "The Page cannot be displayed" message.

I cleared the Automatic Detect settings, but no luck. I fired off an e-mail regarding proxy settings to my ISP but yet to get a response.

But yeah, I still get the same error: "Sorry, we could not sign you in because the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect.
If you have forgotten your password, please click Help in the main messenger window, and then click Help Topics for instructions n resetting your password. 0x81000303"
