there was discussion on wisby here last week. Here is his review on Mundy pre draft that i just found if of interest:

"David Mundy (Murray Bushrangers) 189/82 mid-age stylish right foot (dual-sided) unflappable defender. Slim, almost KPP-tall, U18 outside defender who plays FB at U18 level. More an opportunist, a mopper-up and play-creator than a close-checking, marking key defender. Backs his own judgement every time and is happy to routinely play off his opponent. Biggest assets are ability to read the ball, poise and, above all, disposal. Will get drafted and has definite AFL-quality attributes but his current lack of accountability and intensity would see some opponents kick bags against him. Is not known for his overhead marking either. Initially not a favourite of mine because of his lack of accountability but he has won me over because of disposal, poise, reading, particularly disposal. I rank him at 27 on my list, worth a mid-latish 2nd round pick, but he is likely to go earlier. Ready year 2. *STYLE LIKE: Clement *TRADEMARK: - Mopping up in space behind play deep in defence, or gliding to space to present an option, gathering or receiving then coolly delivering a 45m pin-point pass, perhaps after a 20m run. *SUMMARY ASSESSMENT, RECOMMENDATION: Plays a Paul Roos style (without the marking) - doesn't usually show opponent much respect and backs his ability to read the game and the ball as a higher priority than manning up. Is often good at this but when he is wrong his opponent is often free in space or Mundy has had to rely on a team mate going to his opponent. Has a lot of confidence in his ability to play off his man, attack the ball and outrun opponents. Sometimes misplaced confidence. Plays close in patches but too often gives opponents too little respect and too much latitude... "

Wiseby has got many right over the years. I wish Freo's recruiting would listen to him sometimes, especially:

"Dennis Armfield: Is raw but a quick-thinking, hard-working, courageous dasher who is strong overhead, physical, and mentally tough. Ex rugby kid with plenty of upside. No-one else in AFL recruiting is on the same page as me re this kid but I see definite AFL potential. I hope he doesn't think his AFL chances are gone. He owes it to himself to aspire to play AFL. I believe he is THE kid who snuck under the radar and I expect him to have a big year in WAFL Seniors in 2006."

Come on freo, recuit this kid!! :p

Its obviously not just Freo that has overlooked Armfield, but I definately think that he'll be rookie listed at worst this year, hopefully by us.

Colin left out that Mundy wouldn't know a shepherd if it came up and r**ted his big sister and then slapped him across the chops with the biggest fish they sell at Cicerellos. His willngness to chase is pretty ordinary as well.

I say there have to be question marks over Mundy's ability to really get stuck in come finals time. Mundy plays pretty football. Finals aren't about pretty football.

Apart from the three I saw him lay last week.... Get off his case.

While you guys are on the topic of Mundy, I was wondering what you thought of his year so far, statistically close to his worst season barring goals.

I rate him very highly as to compare him to Joel Bowden, he is just about to turn 22yo so definetly still has plenty of time to develop, he has grown 3cms and put on 8kg since going to Freo, could he become a KP player or would he stay as the main creative component off half back with Johnson, or should he move to the forward line as he has shown ability there as well this year.

Note that this is not a troll as I still rate him very highly and think he could become the No.2, 3 or 4th best player from the draft he was taken in.

Massive question marks. Three poor finals last year, needs to stand up if we get there in 2007.

You're kidding me, his final against Melbourne was fantastic. Some people need to take a hard look at themselves rather than mundy.

I'd like to see us turn Mundy into a wingman/half forward. Just let him roam around free doing the job Macca often seems to do. There's no doubt he's got the skills and class to seriously hurt teams if we can turn him into an attacking weapon.

Shepherding is important no matter where you play, and Mundy seems to be immune to that. The last thing we need is another unaccountable footballer in the Des Headland / Dan Bandy style. When Mundy played at Subi he showed he could be a hardnut if he wanted to be. If he doesn't cut in finals and is continued to be in the first 22 we need to have a look at ourselves. We seem to be one of those teams that carries 4-5 people into the finals who just go absolutely missing when the pressure is on (re: Mundy, Des Headland (shut the **** up about his game 5 years ago brissie please), M Carr etc).

I think hes good player in his range, but if want success he just needs to lift his game. One of those players who just seems to do "just enough" to keep his spot, but never goes above and beyond that.

Just finished watching the tape. He would have finished with about 15 posessions, but many of those were after we took control in the final quarter and Melbourne knew their season was over. Would have had less than ten possessions at 3/4 time, very few (if any) tackles for the game and hardly any marks in the first three quarters. He certainly wasn't "fantastic".

Mundy, Headland, McManus, Parker and Cook all had a poor finals series and have something to prove if we get there this year.

Couldn't disagree more. Showing so much disrespect to one of our good players. And you call yourself a supporter. The lot of you should be ashamed.

I.M.O He seems to me to have lost some of his confidence in defence after giving away easy goals through poor decisions or disposal in the first 4 or 5 games yet when further up the ground he has been okay.

I think the kids a rare gem and could be a future captain of the club! I would love to see him playing on a wing, the kids a star! I think he's a lot more physical than most people see.

Why do you say that?
When is he more physical? He never puts his body on the line especialy at marking contests,he shepards the ball for someone else to get the ball off the ground yet he should be the one getting it.

I just rate him more highly than Deledio is all.

Both similar players, but ive never seen Deledio take a hanger like the one Dave took.

Fair enough. Just the way you said it sounded like you thought we all carry on like pav-for-AA. No biggie. :)

Why is it disrespectful, there just happens to be guys on our list that I rate more highly than Mundy.

His last 2 or 3 games have been better but there were a few games earlier in the season where he quite clearly didn't commit to the contest.

Look in the games that I have taped and watched of him, I have specifically try to relate to these comments posted on here about Mundy. I usually find myself pleasantly surprised when I see him put his body on the line. One particular tackle earlier in the season I would have been proud of myself from my Rugby League days, he hit his man in the ribs and drove him backwards (never mind the fact that the ball popped out from the impact and it resulted in a goal).

Even going back to last week, I can distinctly remember him throwing his body around in 2-3 plays close to half forward. I just think people have him marked as being a certain type of player in their minds, and they continue to run with it regardless of his actions.

foward is the direction for dave, very good player around goals with silky kicking skills, get him foward and let him attack. not trolling
