CARLTON midfielder Marc Murphy has emerged as a clear target for Greater Western Sydney, with the Giants launching an audacious bid to lure Murphy north. The Carlton midfielder is out of contract at the end of next season and is the only Blue the Giants have set their sights on.
A former No.1 draft pick, he is earmarked for a leadership role at GWS and will be offered a multi-million-dollar deal to head to western Sydney after he was left out of Carlton's leadership group this year.

And while Carlton has opened negotiations with its clever ball magnet, talks are said to have stalled early and to be progressing slowly.

I love the Smurph but if he leaves he would have to be a real shmuck. He has a real chance to be a part of something very special ... and be paid very very decently on top. Sorry but if the difference at the end of a career is finishing with $3-4m instead of $4-5m but have the respect of the Carlton faithful and a couple of premierships I know what I would take.

The top young AFL stars would be lining up to be the No.1 target of GWS. As much as GWS would be chasing them, the managers would be chasing GWS.

There is extraordinary money on offer for the prime candidates.

Murphy fits the criteria perfectly.

An exceptional young player that GWS would deem worthy of a marquee spot. And a young bloke who would no doubt see the huge contract very attractive.

Murphy may reject any offer, but then again, some offers are once in a lifetime things.

Let's hope Pendlebury and or Thomas don't fancy playing under Bucks

The article says that Carlton has opened negotiations with Murphy, but talks have stalled & are progressing slowly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but are we not only in December? If I remember rightly his last contract was signed in the May of that year, after talks had stalled & progress was slow.

Once again we are going to see the media speculating about every quality player coming out of contract.

One thing is certain, any extra money GWS offer would be easily made up for Murphy through the opportunities available to Carlton players thanks to the many wealthy corporates associated with the club. As many Carlton players would vouch for over the years, it's not just about the money they can make during their playing career , it's also about being nicely set up post their football careers as a result of having pulled on the Navy Blue.

We are talking an A grade player who was a #1 draft pick and has 5 years of development into him. If they turn around and say you can have 2 picks for him, I would be taking the AFL to court over it and saying that you want a #1 draft pick player, give us the #1 draft pick to compensate us.

The AFL has ****ed the competition through these concessions to attempt to make the team as competitive as possible as quickly as possible.
