I'm not making this thread to bag him like other posters have this year. I've actually been quite impressed with him over the last 3 weeks but last nights effort was absolutely pathetic. He never seens to put his body on the line and on two occassions in defence jumped out of the way as the ball was coming towards him and his opponent. Very dissapointed.

He wasn't the only soft player last night, but his two errors, both which cost us goals, were definietly the ones that stood out.

I am astounded that Murphy is continually bagged for his softness when we have another bloke running around out there who I believe is the softest and most scared footballer in the league. Sublime skills though.

The difference is that Murphy has been soft at 3 other clubs. Proven marshmallow.

A trend I see is: one or two good weeks from certain players who think they have done enough and do sweet FA for a week or two, get criticised, realise their career is on the line and then put in the hard yards for a couple of weeks and then take the foot off the petal after a couple of decent performances and then the cycle repeats itself. We want mad dogs who go out every week with a passion to win and put their body on the line and give their absolute best, 90% is not good enough. As long as we have guys with the poor mentality highlighted above we will remain average, its almost as if the wrong culture is coming into our club.

I didn't say Murphy was our worst player. If you get the chance to watch the replay, do it and see how soft a couple of his efforts were.

I also saw Lucas put in a soft effort and was taken off straight away.

However, saying that, you don't need all 22 doing that. I believe Essendon has enough in and under types to let Murphy do his thing and that is sweeping across half-back and delivering that ball very very well most of the time.

Murphy is just an easy target whenever we lose. I am sick to death of reading about him to be honest. He is not the problem at our club.

If anything, we need more Murphy types (outside players) and less Johnson/Solomon/Peverill types.

That's all very well and it looks great on paper. But the fact, or at least my opinion of the facts , remains that bar 2 or 3 games Murphy hasn't been cruising round delivering the ball well - he's been cruising round turning the ball over with panic handballs and costing us with a lack of committment to the contest.

We should look to Brisbane, everyone there, even the primarily outside players, commits to the contest because they know they would be out of the team if they didn't, a player like Murph regardless of talent would simply not get a look in. Look how they forced Caracella to change his game before he got a go, and then how happy they were to let him go.

I don't think he was attacking Lucas about it, he was giving it as an example of the different standards set. Murphy doesn't seem to be held to account for when he puts in a soft one, but Lucas is.

All this said Murph was excellent last week, bar his non-effort at spoiling Fraser Gehrig, I don't know why he got so satisfied with it as to go to back to serving up tripe.

Sure he wasn't alone. But that doesn't excuse it.

I am not really a fan of him and i have given him a bake a few times.I have had another look at the game and really i thought he was still way in front of a few of his games from earlier this year. He will always have the soft efforts , thats just how he plays. It only looks worse when our guys who are renown for their hardness at the ball dont play well.
Playing him at half back opposite Lovett Murray or Stanton doesnt help either , just stick him on a wing and let him rome around and do what he does.
