He's a bargain at the moment being only a second year player but that will change at the end of the season.

Is a 3 year deal @ 250k per year reasonable?

Im not sure what players of his class can get in their 3rd season.

That's the reason we had money problems, a few too many players were getting paid under the table.

I also have no doubt Murphy will sign another contract, at this stage of his career, $200-275k p/y for a 4 year deal sounds nice. He is only in his 2nd year, has to renew at the end of this season, he's on the minimum at the moment, which is not very much, he'll be very pleased with an increase of 200k p/y, and then at the end of those 4 years, he'll up around 600k-700k, and then we'll sign him on the 5 year deal, taking him through to about 30 years of age, and then we'll negotiate a 2 year deal until he's 32 or so, and then 1 year deals after that, and he'll retire at 35, having played well over 300 games for Carlton, and captained us to a number of premierships

The Club has said it will only give 3 year contracts if everyone at the club agrees, eg the board etc.

We MUST give Murphy a 3 year contract. God knows he's absolutely worth it.

Pretty much agree with what most people are saying here. Make it a 3 year deal, probably around the $200K-$250K per year. I'd imagine he'd be the first player we'd want to stitch up this year.

First 2 years of the contract (06'07) where the standard first round draftee deals (i think around 45 - 50k) and the third year (08) will be around 230k. Carlton will probably move to tie him up to a new deal later this year or early next year.

I remember reading something last year about Murphy being contracted for 3 years and not the standard 2 years given to players out of the draft.

He definitely deserves a three year contract -more so than anyone else on the list. He is a freak.

Sign him up to a 10-year, front-weighted contract that sees us paying him $1m per year for the first 2 years, then $50,000 per year after that. We (should) have the cap space to do so for the next 2 years, assuming we are only paying the minimum 92.5% of the cap (which would leave about $800,000 free by my estimate). After 2 years, we get him for minimum bucks - giving us heaps of cap space to chase premierships. Plus, he's only on the books for $50,000 a year, which makes trading/delisting easy if things don't work out.
