Wow! was not expecting a 12 month jail term. The current climate around one punch laws and his profile probably hurt him a little.

Interesting that we have stuck by him also.. I guess he is under contract anyway and there is little point to a de-listing. 6 months away means out around grand final time? I hope for his sake he was stellar in the off season because that wouldn't be enough time to prove yourself for another contract...

Must be super talented though!

Well, thems the breaks sometimes. Don't see how he could be offered another contract at the end of the year - thats if he even gets out in time. Probably ended his career.

As a newly rookie'd player, isn't he on contract for 2 years? The club would have known about the likely sentence, I actually think they'll try to see him through the year at least. If he gets out on parole in 6 months and somehow keeps his head in the right place I can see him playing for us next year.

I think the sentence is fair, but now that precedent is set I'm back to hoping we can get his life back on track. If we've stood by him this long, we must think he's worth it.

I'm wondering if the fact he was still on our list was a factor in sentencing - if he escaped a prison term and got to continue on his career as an AFL footballer it would almost be as if nothing happened but he now has to have a stint in the slammer so he can consider the error of his ways. Had we delisted him is it possible that the judge might have considered he had paid a price already and that he would be better served making himself a better person without the assistance of an AFL club behind him

Is he any good?

Was surprised he was kept on the list after the incidents last year. I assume he must do some freaky things at training andin the WAFL.

Most talented player we picked up in 2011/12 drafts. Perhaps only Tunbridge gets close.

He was also the highest pick we had in either of those two drafts

Looked through the rest of the 2011 draft after Newman - virtually nothing to get remotely excited about. Brad Hill and Elliot Yeo probably the best of them

Well ****, look what you've gone and done now QS :p

Shit for him, but hard to say that if Schoey had his jaw broken when punched then we wouldn't think something in this range was acceptable.

Did they ever get that bloke out of interest?

Williams won't get 12 Month Though
You hope he won't is what you really mean. I reckon he's a realistic chance to get at least that and should that be the case I won't be surprised if the AFL steps in and cancels the registration of both of them.

Shame. I was looking forward to seeing him play in 2014. Kid has serious talent

Exactly my sentiments. A shame! IT'll hit the kid real hard - personally, i think the sentence harsh. Blame the one punch campaign, i guess.
Murray showed some good form, i thought, in the practice games. Good luck inside, Murray.

I know what you are trying to say, but it's not the campaign that can kill.

Hang on: he had been sending threats of violence in the lead up.

After weeks of threats from Newman on Facebook, the pair saw each other at the Library Nightclub in Northbridge, where they fought for about 10 seconds before bouncers broke up the fight, the court heard.
Had it been a brief, spur of the moment scuffle I am sure there would have been no jail time.

Don't blame the one punch campaign, blame Newman for thinking he could send threats of violence to his victim, then carry that threat out.

This is GBH - if it had have gone down differently it could have been attempted murder.

No problem with the Judge's decision. Clearly a pre- meditated assault resulting in a broken jaw.

Murray will learn that he must find other ways to deal with anger.

Strong message to the community generally. Some things are more important than football...
