As some of you know I was lucky enough to attend today's draft as a guest of the club which was great experience.

As far as our selections go it is fair to say that we got the player's that we had targetted. The recruiting staff had compiled a fairly detailed list to how they thought the draft would unfold and it was just a matter of ticking off the names til it got to our turn.

The plan was to pick up 2 key position type's with our picks, but this was dependant on who was left when it was out go.

It was hoped that atleast 2 of players like Mitch Brown, Trengrove, Roughead, McKernan and Liam Jones would be around when it was our turn to call out the player codes & names. Of course there were contigency plans in place, but luckliy these weren't required. In saying that the recruiting staff had a very good idea of which player's would be around when it was our turn.

Overall the feeling from the recruiting staff was that it was a very good result and with the injection of these young talls as well as Ayce who is highly regarded by those in the know, (Alan McConnell who is head coach of the AFL AIS program rated Ayce as his #1 pick) it was thought that we now had the player's to fill in the gaps so to speak.

The discussion after our picks were done centred around the development program of these new players and getting them into the club over the coming week's. Scott Clayton was happy that he had left his position as our recruiting manger with a very exciting list that was well rounded in terms of midfield and key position options.

If anyone has a question about the day please post it and I will try and help you out with an answer.

Overall a very enjoyable day.

Nice post, just wondering how you managed to get a invite as guest of the club?

Of the 5 mentioned, only Jones & Roughead were left at 31 although McKernon went at 28, 3 picks before. Emma Quayle rates Roughead as potentially the best ruckman available. If McKernan had still be available, do you think the choices would have been the same ? Were we really after tall goalkickers or was the ruck component important, too ?

How accurate was the club's phantom draft ?

Was Jones' age, 17, considered important enough to sway him in favour of others ?

Very informative, pigdog.

Something like 29 of the first 32 picks. Incredibly accurate.

That really is a credit to the club. Even respected media experts don't approach that sort of accuracy.

So apart from Scotty and I assume Rocket, were the remaing 6 on our draft table solely recruiting staff?

The 2 on the front table were Scott Clayton and his assistant Dom Ambrogio.

On the table of 6 behind was Rodney, James Fantasia, Brad Gotch, Simon Dalrymple and another older gentleman who's name escapes me. He was a talent spotter who had an excellent knowledge on all the kids being drafted.

The ruck competent seemed to be very important. With Hudson probably having 2 more years left it sounded like we were keen to bring in a couple of players to hopefully help out Minson at that time. It would be hoped that Cordy and Roughead will be able to provide that support.

Not sure on why we had Jones ahead of a few other's. I think they were really impressed by his attitude and his athleticism which may have swayed there opinion's.

Surprised that Rodney isn't over in Arizona with the playing group. Leon Cameron must be in charge over there (another part of the succession planning maybe?)

Yeah the 3 assistant coaches (Cameron, Dean, Williams) are watching over the boys in the US. Leon is in charge and is highly rated at WO.

A couple of answer's

1. Cornelius - He was certainly there about's, but not rated as highly the player's we selected.

2. Post - It was thought that he would be gone by the time it got to our selection's so wasn't really thought of.

3. Midfielder's - As well as the obvious one's Nick Suban was one they were hoping would slip through.

4. Tom Lee - I think that he was almost the next in line.

Would be interesting to find out. Alot of draft watchers talk of his versatility, personally I'm happy he could end up as a genuine CHB, given Everitt might be better used as a Gilbee type - someone who can run off & use his disposal ability.

Excellent Write up pig, very enjoyable read!

I did forget to mention that Rodney mentioned that he had an important family function on this week which was the main reason he remained home. Pretty sure it had to do with his daughter's graduation from school.

Just a quick one Pigdog, given that players like Cornelius slipped down, was there any disappointment expressed that we didn't have any more picks left to us after #32 ??

Not really.

I think the Scott is very happy with the way the list is developing and thought 3 picks + a couple of rookies (hopefully) would be enough for this draft.

We do have quite a bit of untried talent on our list (players like O'Shea, Lynch, Wood, Ward, Boumann, Stack, Grant, etc..) who can hopefully take big steps next year.

True enough. Thanks for the update.

Great insight pigdog, thanks heaps.

One question, did they guys talk about or make any indication of another club they thought did really well from the draft, maybe particular players they thought clubs picked up for a bargin.
