We keep talking about finals and the like next year and below I have outlined 6 key players who will have a massive say in whether or not we can push the 8 and beyond, the below are not our best players but they have the potential to shape our season.

Houla: We need to leave him at HFF all year, he will give us 30 goals and around 30 direct assists - his foot skills will be a massive factor with sides zoning off on fev.

Walker: Needs a big year, had plenty of ill luck last year, but its time 1AW went from being potential (star) to consistent performer - if he can do this he will add much need versitility to our line and a little bit of unpredicability. We really missed him last year.

Bower: Was alomost our most improved until he did his shoulder last year if he can improve in a similar vein again in 09 this will go along way to really shoring up our defense - love his run. If he can reproduce games like he had against the lions and hawks at seasons end then this will allow us to use and release Waitey on a needs basis.

Fisher: Like walks needs a big year, without a doubt the biggest dissapointment from 08 given what he is capable of doing - needs to work on his kicking (understatment) over summer and regain his confidnence - if fish can fire it will really help spread the load.

Cloke: With the arrival of Warnock and the extra preseason under the belts of hammer and kruz Clokey will need to look to become a permenent forward (CHF or FF) like he did towards the end of last season (cue lions game big pack marks). Big tank / frame, does all the team things is physical and is a very accurate kick for goal. Those who are Cam haters will point to the Hawks game where hodge ran off him, hodge would run off most people of cam's size for mine Ratts was more at fault here for letting this match up continue. If we can get close to 30 goals out of Cam next year it will be a massive win.

Warnock : As Ratts he stated recently we finished last for hit outs this year and hence why we so agressively chased robbie who at 206cm is going to invaluable around the stopages. If he can hold down the number one ruck spot and get first hands on the pill murph gibbs juddy and the like will carve it up.

Cant wait for 09!

Spot on.

However, sadly, I don't see Brad Fisher improving much beyond last year (I'd love him to prove me wrong) but I'm not convinced that he has the drive to lift himself to another level.
Personally,I see him drifting in and out of the seniors, as some of the hungrier young fellas push to make their name in the side.

Nice thread.

Houla kicking 30 would be great, would be brilliant if he can get his own ball a little bit more and put heaps of defensive pressure on. If he could play an Akermanis type of game i'd be very happy.

Walker - Could be a great option up forward. Can mark overhead well. Would love to see the ball delivered to him on the lead because hes so quick. Also very good at applying defensive pressure. Could be anything because he is so athletic.

Bower - Really happy with how hes progressing. Good size and speed.

Cloke - Most will probably laugh but i believe Cloke is capable of being as good as Cameron Mooney. Can mark well, can kick straight and is too tall for most genuine full backs. If Cloke, Kreuzer and Fev play forward he may attract the 3rd defender and could cause havoc if sat in the goal square.

Fisher - His marking is good but unfortunately his ground game incl defensive pressure is terrible. Terrible converter too. I think Cloke, Fev and Kreuzer playing forward will be enough marking talent.

Warnock - Very happy to get him.

I believe we really will require someone to play the zoning off - rebounding defender role ala Luke Hodge. Jarrad Waite would be a great third man up and if he can improve his kicking a little bit could be a perfect candidate for the role.

i agree with everything u've said, other than you can't have to no full forward other than fev..

My "super 6" are; Austin, Hartlett, O'hAlpin, Cloke, Armfield, Russell.
If these players can "stand up" and go to the next level we will be a difficult team to match up or win against.
All the other players have shown they will just get better with games under their belt, but these 6 are capable of doing anything

I like your stories Blue Life. I now expect to have sweet dreams tonight - Goodnight all ;)

Agree, but unfortunately there are 2 players there who up to now have shown me absolutely nothing and i fear that if they dont really step up there carrers at Carlton are drawing closer to a end.

Big question mark over Cloke's lack of pace/mobility. We all try and pretend it's not true, bit it is. Not saying he can't go on with it, but I have reservations.

I'd still call to confirm.

Given his height, I think his mobility is pretty good. Will never be a great player, but what he does is provide a contest, and this is what we are screaming out for on our half forward line. The other thing he does is kick the ball out of sight, and has a neat pair of hands.

Travis Cloke has a pretty big tank on him...suggests that aerobic capacity is at least in the genes. If Cam's objective throughout the pre-season is to shed a couple of pounds and improve his aerobic fitness I think he could be very handy across the HF line.

What is the source that Cam doesn't already have good aerobic fitness?

I know it's 'common BF knowledge', just wondering if there's a better source to contradict Nathan Buckley saying that Cam has a huge tank during the Round 4 game against Collingwood this year.

I'm a big Cam fan, and generally go in to bat for him, and the one point that normally get's thrown back is lack of pace/mobility...no source beyond that. I don't think he's all that bad in the mobility stakes, but were he to assume a more permanent forward line role I think it's an area he would look to improve on.

He's a nice mark, a thumping kick, and a cantankarous ******...all the makings of a good CHF in my book.

I'm also a Cam Fan, I have nothing to refute the speed argument with, but since Round 4 I no longer stand for the engine argument. I'll get Buckley's exact words and post them tonight :thumbsu:

Yes but he is slow.

Did you see him against St.Kilda this year?

He is slow, in a modern game where defenders will expose slow tall forwards.

Not saying he won't make it, but I think he is up against it.

How many slow forwards can you carry? Fevola doesn't chase all the time. Not sure you can carry him and Cloke in the same forwardline. Maybe for 2009 but not after that if we're fair dinkum.

But I hope to be proven very wrong. ;)
