NAB Draft Pick 1: T. Scully
NAB Draft Pick 2: J. Butcher

PRE-SEASON Pick: L. Ball (Possible)
* L. Ball would be a quality player to add to the list if we got his body right, solid pre-season plus an injection of confidence id have a lot of faith in him. plus he is still only 25 so plenty of football left in him.

As a result we have three victorians which eliminates the prospect of them wanting to return home interstate.
Although trengove is very tempting (but there is that chance he could return home interstate). L. Ball could be just as sufficient providing he gets himself right.

Thoughts?

How many slow, inside midfielders do we need though?

Ball might be worth a crack, but only if we don't upgrade Valenti and trade away one of the existing midfielders. And he wouldn't be cheap, stick with what we've got IMO.

Any chance we can get Aaron Sandilands in the PSD?

I think he's in the Pavlich category of players who have had enough of basketcase sides and would want to walk straight into a winner.

You know, like Nathan Brown and the Tiges :D

Why will Trengove go back to SA? Because Scott Thompson did? Correct me if I am wrong but didn't we draft 4 players from interstae last year. Ridiculous assumption and terrible reason not to draft him. The boy is going to moving interstate no matter what. He would not get lower than pick 5 and will be coming to either Victoria or WA. If he is the best player, we should draft him, regardless of his home state. If as we hope in 3-5 years we become a premiership challanger, I truly doubt he will leave the club.

I'd be ecstatic if we got ball, he is hugely underrated. not gonna happen, but the question of the psd will be an interesting one...

It makes the situation tricky in that if we were guaranteed to get Ball in the PSD then i reckon that would be a fantastic idea to take butcher as trengove isnt exactly a blistering midfielder so wed be gaining 1 borderline elite midfielder in ball, 1 superstar in the making in scully and 1 gun forward in the making in butcher.

Obviously this cant happen as the PSD is held after the ND but if Ball really did want out of st kilda due to lack of game time and slipped to the PSD and we ended up taking trengove it would be a poor bit of recruiting as we would essentially be picking up 3 similar players

It may help your speculation to know that Luke Ball has already signed a contract with St Kilda which puts him on a much lower base payment with heavy performance based incentives. What that means is that St Kilda hold all the cards when negotiating a trade. If there isn't a big enough trade incentive the Saints can just say "next ...".

If they don't find a great trade, they've got themselves an elite player on base payments. Win / win for the Saints.

Proof that my posts get read.

SUCCESS!!!!!

Pick 1: Scully
Pick 2: Trengove
Pick 18 : Panos

PSD Pick 1: Liam Jurrah Jr.

This makes me happy in a special way.

I like the idea of Pick 1 Scully and Pick 2 Butcher :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Not sure about Ball.

Pick 18 could be a quality midfield, maybe Jetta :D

can anyone please tell me the point of the pre season draft? Isnt it basically an extention of the national draft...and if so why dont teams just pick those players in the psd at the end of the national draft?

^^^ Older players that have or haven't yet had a crack at the draft. They can't qualify for the real draft because of their age. Also players like Robbo, who have retired can go through the PSD.

Liam Jurrah is 20yo, he never went in the National Draft and was only recently convinced to give AFL a real crack. So he elected to go in the PSD as a rookie.

I reckon we should look at Pearce Lydell in the PSD. Anyone here seen the kid, he's playing for Casey.

I think that's wrong Richskee. I don't think there is age criteria on the National Draft. I'm pretty sure the PSD was established for uncontracted players, but these days it serves very little purpose and could probably be removed. I thought Jurrah forgot to sign the form, and missed the National Draft, but then after getting special consideration from the AFL was allowed in the PSD.

The interesting thing this year is that we're probably not looking to use a bucket load of picks. We will probably go Pick 1,2,18,34 - but after that we might only want to add one more to the senior list (or none if we promote rookies). So do we use pick 50 and go for the guy we want, or do we hold out for the PSD. That way you're first choice might be gone, but you get a few others down to training, get first go at any uncontracted players, and maybe get another miracle like Jurrah.

Nah, if we draft anyone from Casey it'll be Alex Silvagni, just so we can say we have Buckley & Silvagni in our team!

Its definetly not age because lee brown was picked up in the national draft last year...and as for uncontracted isnt any player delisted uncontracted such as brown and davenport who were picked up in the national draft?

Maybe it is purely used these days for clubs who cant decide yet on who to use their last pick on...such as a couple of players who have been training with them or a smokey...

am i right?

think we should definitely have a serious look at this kid, at least as a rookie... saw him play up in darwin last summer, super tough, quick and good skills... absolutely smashed Palmerstons B&F and know there were a few clubs looking at him for the draft last year... another aboriginal who could add alot to our side... plus his form for casey lately has been very good
