I had something similar years ago when Lynch was playing CHB. I was at an eagles lunch and I asked if he would be better at CHF because of his size, marking ability (at the time he wasn't as rubber chested) and his big boot. I was told there was no chance. Next thing, guess who's playing CHF?

Think we may just have unlocked woosh s coaching philosophy

Ask ken, do the opposite

On topic, I thought Shuey was fantastic tonight. Really showed poise in congestion and hit plenty of good targets. Hopefully it continues into the season proper.
Let's hope we can keep most of our key players free from injury, if we get lucky with that up the ladder we go.
Shuey was great, if Ellis can stay fit what an awesome pick up he could be.

On a good note Sylvia looks like he was a great pickup for freo.
I couldn't help myself, I travelled onto the Freo board to compliment them on Sylvia and Duffy, it went down pretty well obviously my username drew some admiration and there were some other compliments paid too.

I bet suma didn't do anything today that Lyon wouldn't have. They would have had a plan as to what they wanted to do / achieve so I wouldn't be drawing any conclusions whatsoever on sumichs coaching ability based on today

That said Simpson was the right choice and I'm glad we've got him
I am still trying to figure out what they wanted to achieve by getting pantsed?

Lyon and Dawson still have a bit of st kilda in them.

They appreciate a good preseason rodgering

Jokes aside I think that whilst they wouldn't be happy with the result I doubt they'd be too perturbed. They quite possibly would have been trying out some different structures (no man back as a potential example) and these would have been discussed prior to the game

When I was a kid my dad used to let me sit in the car and play with the steering wheel and gear stick but without the car running so I could pretend to drive

Today Peter Sumich was that kid

I think it was more like when I give my daughter the tv remote and I tell her it's a phone and her grandma wants to talk to her.

It's not really a phone Suma, and you look silly.

Who was the car?:p

For a team that didnt try apparently:confused: a lot of Docker players were huffing and puffing like emphysema patients.

Pathetic club that just continues to enhance their culture of failure. Have a look how a professional and successful club does it.

They did get belted by Carlton to the tune of 90 points last year.

And Brisbane 'won' the comp.
I, as much as the next person like to sink the boot in to the purple crew, but having watched the game you could see their lack of intent/interest.

I think all they wanted was to get some miles in the legs and try some of the kids out.

They missed a lot of targets, hardly tackled and looked very disinterested in going in hard to the ball or running back to help.

They are at a different phase in not only their 2014 pre-season, but in their overall progress as a team, they know the gameplan, they will refine it at training and possibly ramp it up in games 2 and 3 of the pre-season.

Having said all that, we did look very very good, they allowed us to run free and without pressure, but the pleasing thing is we actually executed very well. I do wonder how well we stuck to Simpson's gameplan, without going back to old habits, as it would be easy to just do what's comfortable when you're so far ahead and there is little pressure on.

But it did look like handballs will be a feature of the game, which is fine, although there is a lot of improvement to be made there, the shorter kicks out of the back were generally very good. But they really do need to be precise, and there were a couple we stuffed up, but luckily weren't punished for.

No injuries and a belting of the little anchors is still a great way to start 2014.

Random thoughts:
- good overlap. Players running past the mark to receive a handball.

- clear effort to work the ball away from stoppages, rather than slamming it on the boot. Still a few slams though.

- Hutchings tackling. His tackling technique is fantastic and avoids giving away frees.

- moved the ball down the corridor when appropriate.

Questions:
- where was Schofield?
- has Tunbridge done a hammy?

Clearly we're more advanced fitness wise that the purple helmets. This is common for a top 4 team to start slow as to build up and peak in September whereas other teams (poor the previous year and/or new coach) need to fire early to build confidence.

Not sure if we won't hit the wall come September but I put us right back in top 4 contention. Masten looks like he can hold his own and with Shuey, Wellingham, Ellis, Gaff, Selwood rotating through the midfield with also Sheperd, Cripps, Darling, le Cras, and Rosa, we look like we have run and ability across the ground.

I really like Priddis' game yesterday (a lot less inside then bang on the boot or handball to opposition) but still worry how he can rotate and be effective elsewhere. Freo weren't fit enough to block the game up. It was a training drill so still want to see what sort of game Priddis plays.

Fitness programming and timing it so they peak in September. They have nothing to prove so are possibly purposely behind in their program so they don't run out of gas come September. We on the other hand have something to prove as a team, and with a new coach who has something to prove.

No one wants to lose but they're just not at the same point of fitness we are at the moment. That game says way more about us than it does them.

Peak too early was something I considered also but hopefully with Simpson coming from the hawks. He will have a good handle on training workloads whether heavy or light during the 2nd rounds.

If we peak too early then so be it. We don't have a choice but to be fit and firing right now.

In recent years the trend is going towards teams knowing how to be ready in NAB and last the season. Hopefully we can do this and have our flag window back on track. On paper I think we've got one of the best lists in the comp with Hawks, Helmets, and Swans.

-Goals from midfielders big plus
-Hope Ellis can stay on the park bit of a general down back calling the shots !
- Cripps and Wellingham looked great
- hutch best 22
- interchange cap not going to help big bodied mids . Freo as the highest rotator last year will struggle to run out games .
-Lecca is all class big year ahead
- shuey , masto and wellers will hopefully take attention away from gaff
If darling plays more mid time we need another fwd . Hope to see McInnes , gov, tunners ( hammy pending ) in next few games

Still recovering from his hammy strain a few weeks ago.
I am liking this 'safer' approach to injuries relative to last year for example. Easing NN into the pre-season, being cautious with Wellers and Brennan after pulling up tight a few weeks ago, resting Gaff (infection), Schoey (hammy) and Tunners (hopefully minor..?) from yesterday's game, limiting X's game time.. etc. We need our best on the park each week if we want to see September. I know you can't control injuries from happening, but hopefully this approach can minimise their chances of happening in the future. It's an early call, but I'm liking the way Simmo is going about things :thumbsu:
