NAB cup format

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The AFL are just not content on settling on a format for a period because they are to paranoid about the other football codes eating in to the start of the season. They are trying to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow so to speak, but in doing so are just ruining the appeal.

18 games in 18 days may sound good in theory but when its just glorified practice matches with the some gimmicky rules like 9pt goals changing roasters and nothing to play for like a cup so the clubs that have no hope of wining the premiership have something to aspire too, then people will just lose interest.

I don't think they reach that pot of gold this year, A new format for next season then. That rugby 9's looked like a success maybe a weekend of a lighting premiership then only a couple of weeks of NAB challenge practice matches.

I don't think the clubs want to win anything though. All they are concerned about at this time of the year is the best preparation for the upcoming season and the only thing that counts, the AFL premiership! Surely this year's format fulfils that requirement better than an actual competition with a meaningless prize at the end.

But do any of the clubs want to partake in a lightning premiership? I highly doubt it.

Teams still played roughly the same number of preseason games with the knockout comp as once they were knocked out of the NAB Cup they just played NAB Challenge games and teams still rested and rotated players the same as now. Winning a preseason cup may not mean that much to clubs but at least it added some interest and made it seem like an actual competition rather than a pointless series of practice games with nothing riding on it.

Why not it will be fan, none of the players will have to try to hard, all matches will be short 10min half's, you can do it over a weekend maybe host it in Western Sydney to try and give the game a boost, but make sure all the best players are playing Franklin, Ablett, Judd etc etc..
Footy on TV all day two days straight. The AFL can turn it in to a carnival type atmosphere out and inside the ground with activities for the kids.

Done right and with some handy prize money for the winner it can work.

Trophy cabinets are there for a reason to be full and displayed, any trophy will do! As long as the cabinet looks full of achievements.
All club want to win trophy's, it's good for any club, makes it feel worthy and a sense of achievement, it's also useful in historical terms too to look back on.

IMHO, the Challenge format is absolute rubbish. The pre season cup was always a glorified practice match series, but at least there was some prize money and a trophy in it. Now it's an utter waste of time.
But thats the point...Why on earth do we need to have the trophy? I havent heard one good arguement for it yet.[/quote]

A tournament with a reward at the end gives the sides something to play for, and a reason for supporters to get excited.
It also encourages sides to play full strength or close to full strength squads while still getting game time into the youngsters and fringe players.

The Challenge is far too over hyped to be considered practice matches, but at the same time there is no ladder or final, so it can't be considered a tournament. I think it needs to be either one or the other, what we have now is neither here nor there, so it is pointless.

hate to say this.
but looking at the surface at the dome, somebody is going to get hurt very soon.
the 10 metres around the perimeter of the ground is an accident waiting to happen.
just hope its not a champ that looses a year because of this,so far its been ok because the players have pulled up early.
but when the real stuff starts, they will go full bore and lets cross our fingers nobody gets hurt.

It's all about getting fitness and practicing gameplans. It's not about winning competitions. Heck you could go as far as saying if players go to hard early on in these matches to get a "result" it could hamper the rest of there season as they may burn out.
It's all about the main season, pre season should not be a competition.

But they really all only want to win this one

and the preseason is a step along the way not an end in itself.

I really don't like having derbies in pre-season that detract from the real ones later in the year. Having 2 of them this year is ridiculous and hinders our development under a new coach - you want to test the players in game-day situations and having 2/3 of your games against one opponent that is tactically unique sucks.

Then why bother having anything at all? Start the season 3 weeks early if practice matches count for so little.

Dont mind this format. Have actually watched a few of the games compared to previous years.

They are pre-season games. 18 games in 18 days is good. There is no reason to have a final at the end.....why. Its defeats the whole purpose of practice games. If there was a trophy and some cash to win at the end.....No one would put there best team out, except the lower ranked teams.

omg do you not understand? We need them for PRACTICE! Not a competition.

One derby makes sense. Saves travel for everyone. I think the derby for the first game of 3 in all the states makes a lot of sense as it's the least serious and really is just a scrappy practice match. Then play 2 different clubs.

I wouldn't be too worry about your development being hindered by playing Freo twice though. The Freo team you played the first week is going to be much different than the one you play next week both in terms of players and intensity. It really will be like playing 2 different sides. Not to mention all practice matches are much more about what your team does itself not about the opponent. Freo are the perfect team you want to play to test any new game plan. Especially one that focuses on clean kicking and ball retention. I think a lot of coaches would be keen to test their styles against Freo's high intensity and pressure game style.

I think this NAB challenge is dumb.
If they wanna take the game regional, then that means play the games in areas that dont get AFL games, so no Etihad, Kadinia, Metricon, Aurora, Tio. 10 of the games were played at AFL grounds... take the game to the people that dont see it each week.
Gotta play for something. you want clubs interested, then offer up good money. Im sure if clubs were playing for $1m they would take it seriously, and if winning the NAB and season proper in the same year earnt a bonus 500k or $1m then more clubs would take it seriously.

I understand clubs want practice matches so we have these mickey mouse games. You can't simulate playing for four points so why pretend we can?
