"It would be good to stay home," Naitanui said. "I will probably get homesick if I go somewhere else."

Is that a cause for concern if we draft him or is it just something all youngsters would feel about crossing the country?

PS - just quietly, how cool do I feel having the same birthday as the MFC?:p

That's not too encouraging, but I'm either way on Naitanui now anyway. I was aware he is an unbelievable athlete, but i didn't know he has the kicking power of Warrick Capper. After watching the Wa v Vic metro game the other day, I would be just as happy with Jack Watts of which i was very impressed with.

I also read somewhere recently that he hasn't had more than 13-14 possessions in a match of any significance. Not sure whether thats true or not, but its not that encouraging in any event.

That's some pretty good selective editting. The very next line reads the following

"But, then again, I don't mind where I go because to get the opportunity to play at an AFL club is my main dream."

Of course a kid is going to say his preference is going to be to stay close to home, that doesn't mean he'll want to go back later on.

I'd say with most it's hard to say if they'll want to go home before they actually leave, as most would've never spent much time out of home. You can't really gauge the go-home factor for a year or more, if they're enjoying themselves and getting plenty of opportunities, liking the club and they've got good mates at the club around them, then there's no reason why they'd want to leave.

We can't assume that all interstate draftees are massive pansies like scott thompson who'll want to run home to mummy after a couple of years

Happy Birthday :)

On the topic, I don't think a club should consider homesickness as an issue when drafting a player. Most of them stay with the club that drafts them provided they are getting the opportunities they desire and are happy in their employment/personal environment.

Of course, there is always the risk that a Scott Thompson may eventuate, but it is likely that the compensation through picks/players will be adequate in most cases.

Jack Watts has said something similar about moving interstate too, albeit he was a touch more subtle. It's exactly what you'd expect really, and I'm fairly sure that most of these guys forget about home once they've made some mates and become comfortable in the city.

The difference is that Naita would get to come to the thriving metropolis that is the great city of melbourne, where as Watts would be headed to the sleepy hollow of Perth.;)

he will stay in Perth, he's good but we've had one like him for years, his names Jeff White, we will take Watts lMO

On a positive note guys......our club has a heap of interstaters. Can't recall having lost any of them through homesickness. The only one still to re-sign is Farren Ray and he is still likely to stay.

Scott Thompson, Jeff White, Jeff Farmer, Des Headland and many more
true there are many that have gone home after a while but last off-season we saw a great example of how it can sometimes have the reverse effect. young blue josh kennedy was completely against going home after settling in and making such good friends with his carlton teammates. if our blokes are a good enough bunch of guys then naitanui wont want to go anywhere after a couple of years... hopefully.

if he's going to become the player we think he is then it's worth it...

look what west coast got for Judd... they used pick 3 on Judd... when he wanted to go home they got Pick 3, Pick 18 and a young and developing Kennedy (who was a top 5 selection)... still worth doing even if you know he was going to go home...

we were a bit unlucky with Scott... if he stayed 1 more year he would've had much more trade value and we could've got a bit more for him...

Take the best player forget postional choices take the best player, jeff white is finished now so unless your relying on Jamar to do it with P. Johnson id be pickin NicNat if he is there. The best player is picked in the first 2 rounds then pick what u need unless you trade for it!!

And another point to remember, its not our pick yet. I reckon West Coast is more likely to win the spoon now - plus we are still to play the Eagles at the G which we would go in as favourites.

I think its more likely that they will make the decision for us.

Watts is firming...

I'd rather us not draft him anyway.

He's a Project player & id rather take Watts or Rich/Hartlett if Watts isn't available...

Cant see that WCE or Freo would want him (with a top 3 pick that is...) with their ruck stocks either.

Look at the ladder, what it may finish at the end of the year.

if you guys finish 2nd last.

WCE: Jack Watts (Why pick a ruck with Cox their, have Seaby, who isnt that bad, despite what every one says)
MELB: Daniel Rich (I feel dont need a Ruck, Johnson and Jamar have showed in the last two weeks that they can cut it at this level, it'll be Rich before Hartlett any ways.
FREM: Hamish Hartlett (Need mids, capable mids, who can win their own ball aswell as kick long, fits the bill. Dont need a ruck, Sandilands and Warnock?? Bradley) plenty of other young rucks in the west.
PORT: Nicholas Naitanui (They need a ruck, even though he is largely a ruck and thats it, not a 5th mid like a cox, but Lade is done and Brogan isnt showing the signs he used too. still a good ruck though. May pick Hurley though as their key defenders arent outstanding (Chaplin and Thurstans)
ESS: Michael Hurley or NickNat. hopefully Hurley. will be a very good player, i feel.

Watts wont nominate if thats the case..

On top of that, I think Freo would take Nick Nat if they had the choice.

I think Port will get Hartlett..

As much as id like to see Rich at Melbourne, its not going to happen.

Funniest comment I've read in ages. Yep, PJ and Jamar are soon to be the most dominant ruck combo in the AFL.....

We'll get Nat or Watts if it's our choice.

Watts doesn't want to leave Vic and I'd doubt West Coast would pass on Rich
