posted this for the guys on hotrods board, thought id post it here too. sorry its not ery good, my vision from my seat wasnt good, not much highlights to be honest..

very big crowd, slightly more swans fans but definately plenty of vocal pies supporters.be warned, we were in the forward pocket so our sight wasnt very good, i tried to write down as much as I could. left halfway through last qtr to avoid rush

1st Qtr. 37 - 12 Swans way.
goals- Bryan, Rocca

We just got killed in the centre clearances, not enough pressure, swans just dominated the play, outclassed a very young backline which had Cox, Isles, Toovey. very bad mistake by wellingham, got pinned for too far ran back into defense with it.

Best- Clement, Clarke (or Shaw, couldnt tell from distance) pendles

2nd Qtr. 62-34 swans way
Best- Daisy, Benny J. Bryan

better qtr more pressure put on the swans, Swan looked very slow or unfit dont know whats wrong with him but really needs to work harder for fitness, clarke was having alot of trouble with pace of the game, so made alot of errors and turnovers. we missing A leading forward, just no leads by our forwards, swans ran it out too easily. Daisy played well, great step and run which led to a licca goal, Wellingham made up for his earlier mistake by really giving us some run and speed, impressed me.

3rd qtr- 94-60 swans way
Goals- Rocca 2, Lockyer, Lonie
best- rocca, daisy, bryan

good fightback by the pies, two early goals by rocca and lockyer pulled the lead back to 4, but swans kicked 3 goals in succession to kill any chance, sydney played all their stars and their cohesion was evident due to it, young kids did well to fight back, again wellingham and daisy did good, pendles didnt do much which is dissapointing

player by player-

Lonie- Didn't see him at all besides a good long range goal in the third. disapointing, shouldnt play first round

Clement- probably our best in defence, but when him and presti are our only defenders with exprience, and the way sydney were kicking the ball in its to be expected, because none of our players lead, jimmy got into trouble a fair bit, but his class shone through.

Pendles- I dont know if i was too far away from the midfield or what, but I didn't see him do alot, let his man run riot which cost a goal from lack of defensive skills, didnt see him do his usual classy stuff. quiet game.

o'bree- one of the few mids who stood up, kicked a goal and ran through the midfield, did very wellI though

Cox- played in defence played on o'laughlin from what I could tell, did some handy things passing the ball off under pressure, but still needs time to develop, was far from our worse

Daisy- Very impressed with his willingness to tackle and chase put pressure on opposition, which was lacking from our guys, great little side step and run to give licca a goal. great game without really starring

Egan- Hardly got near the ball, played in defence for some bits, also midfield, did not do enough, should've done more. too quiet gme

Brown- overwhelmed I thought, our poor develiary didn't help, 2 guys jumping for the same ball, ball spills, swans run off through midfield, thats how it happened in the first qtr, played back for a little bit and didn't do too badly I though. will play williamstown for the season, not ready for real thing.

Licca- just ran and ran, I thought he was our Best IMHO. swans ran off him a little bit, but licca never was fast, just got the ball and used it well

Reid- Led well, but as i said the ball just dropped too short and swans ran off, but did enough to show he has some talent, will play williamstown all year

Richards- rucks alright, but is just dead set useless around ground, Swans got all the clearances and just got the ball first.

R. Shaw- Used his pace, but to be honest I didnt see much of him, but when i did, I liked, more about me not being able to see down the ground, then him not getting the ball I think

Rocca- Our best forward, kicked 3 goals, marked well, definately going to need him this year from this game. great game pebbles.

Lockyer- kicked a goal, did a few turn overs but far from our worst

Johnno- got the balled and used it well, turning into a real star player for us, will have a great year

Maxwell- Picked up the slack in defence for toovey and Cox, played hard and wasnt scared to dive for the ball

Toovey- Its sad to say but I dont think he is cut out for AFL, just looked out of his depth, got pushed off it, could'nt keep up

Presti- solid as a rock in defence, can't say anything bad about his game, just goes about it, along with clement was the reason Swans didnt kick more

Swan- As I said, he looks unfit or carrying something, just didnt do anything of note, very unhappy with him.

H. Shaw- I kept getting him and Clark confused, he must've played more a midfield role because when Swans kicking towards me, I couldn't see him with anyone, Really should play defence, instead of cox and toovey though.

Bryan- played in defence, and did a good job, very happy with his game, would've preferred he go forward and kick a few bombs though

Wellingham- apart from his blooper and handing swans a goal, he played a really good game and gave us the boost of speed we needed, of the young players, and there was alot of them, he showed me the most, just ran and ran all day.

Clarke- I was really looking forward to seeing him play, but i walked away a bit confused, from all reports I was excited but he looked way out of his comfort zone, he made some mistakes which cost us, and didn't do much to repay for it, definately needs a year in williamstown before he plays seniors

Nichols- he played well, kicked a goal and used his pace, might get a few games this year.

Left halfway trhough 4th quarter to get home early.

Magpies go down to Swans

Despite some promising individual performances, Collingwood has gone down to Sydney by 56 points in the Regional Challenge clash in the NSW Riverina town of Narrandera on Friday night.

In front of more than 10,000 people and on the big Narrandera ground, Collingwood got to within four points in the third quarter after the Swans took the ascendancy in the first half, but with some stars resting in the last term, the Magpies eventually lost 19.9 (123) to 10.7 (67).

Pleasingly there were no injuries or reports to come out of the game.

Of the notable performances, Anthony Rocca, playing in his first match of the pre-season, was very impressive in the forward line, while Shane O’Bree played a fine game in the midfield and rookie-listed player Sharrod Wellingham shone on a wing with his pace and skill.

In the first quarter the Swans jumped away to an early four-goal advantage, and by half time had extended the margin to six majors.

However with fog descending over the ground in the second half, the Magpies rallied due mainly to the run provided by O’Bree, Heath Shaw and Ben Johnson, while Rocca was on fire.

But Sydney was able to regain the momentum and re-established a six-goal break going into the final stanza.

With many of Collingwood’s senior players sitting out the fourth term, a strong Sydney side was able to skip away and control proceedings.

In positive signs for the Magpies, James Clement took another step forward with a robust game in defence after his first outing against the Saints last week, while Scott Pendlebury put in another polished midfield display, and Chris Bryan started extremely well up forward, and continued to contribute when rotating through the ruck.

Paul Licuria also put in a hard-running performance, while Dale Thomas worked hard and continued to improve.

It was the first time in seven years an AFL match has been played in the competition’s NSW heartland of the Riverina, and locals declared it to be the biggest crowd at a sporting event in Narrandera in 50 years.

Collingwood, which was without Nathan Buckley, Josh Fraser, Leon Davis, Travis Cloke, Shane Wakelin, Scott Burns, Brodie Holland, Alan Didak and Paul Medhurst for the Narrandera match, will play its final Regional Challenge clash of the pre-season against Richmond next Friday in Mildura

Cheers. I don't care how much of it is true, at least you wrote a few notes down.

Swan has been relatively quiet by his standards, but I think he's beginning to warm up, should be ready to go come Round 1. A quality player.

I'm not worried about the result. At the end of the day, Sydney played their best side (or close to it), whereas Collingwood were missing a few players who are walk up starters in our side.

Get the impression Ben Reid, could play first round, seeing Russa has gone down, again. MM really happy with him apparently.
Could Wellingham be promoted to the senior list???
Reid would be a long shot to play 1st round, but it's a possibility.

As for Wellingham - Nobody will be promoted to the senior list as of yet, because we won't need any of the rookies for AFL action. Seeing as we can promote two, we'll wait until we might need one of them before doing it.

In the sun Ben reid got in the best for collingwood, did he play really that well or is it the paper just trying to pump him up?? (to people who saw the game)

Gotta agree on Richards after watching him against the Saints last week! It is frustrating watching him after seeing Fraser so skillful once the ball is on the ground! There are 2 things that may help, one is called Bryan and the other is that it is generally agreed that ruckman take a while to develop and he has suffered injuries. Toovey? Again a very fair assessmenet. He just looks so flat footed and plain slow! Thats the last thing the team needs. Maybe he will be a James Hird and come good from a low draft pick and use guts to win the footy.

Yeah im also pleased Licuria had a good game, its good to hear after people were wanting him to be given the chop. Obree sounded he was alright.

I like the sound of this sharrod wellingham. Also pleased thomas got in there and had a go.

With the swan question - did he actually seem to be outstanding in last years preseason, because i cant really recall him setting the world on fire in the preseason only to come out and surprise everyone when the real stuff began. So he is hopefully still in warm up mode.

Who was missing for the Swans ?

Sydney had six players missing who would be pretty much automatic picks if available, but probably only Leo Barry and maybe Kennelly are in the top half dozen or so. The rest are more in the 10-18 bracket within the team.

Those missing were Barry, Kennelly, Crouch, Ablett, Schneider and Roberts-Thompson. Those last four all look like still being out when the real stuff gets underway in a few weeks time.

Toovey was in the top 5 or so over 20m in his draft camp, I'm surprised to hear people saying he looks slow. That is a worry.

I don't think a rookie will be promoted yet, like Vinnie says, we'll do it when they are likely to be needed. It doesn't make any financial sense to pay a player more if they aren't going to play seniors.

Wellingham did sound as though he was impressive on the wing, however, which is a very positive sign. :)

I don't know that the players get paid more when they get promoted due to an injury - Aside from match payments, of course.

If I remember it correctly last year Swan's preseason was nothing of note at all. He might of even missed a few training sessions, maybe due to his court appearance.
