If we all remember there was some disquiet when Ross Lyon was appointed coach. On the occasion of Nat Fyfe's 100th game, it is worth remembering that Mark Harvey preferred Ryan Bastinac to Nat in the draft, and we can all thank Phil Smart for standing his ground and insisting Nat be drafted by the mighty Dockers. Hindsight is wonderful.

Not certain your correct,IMO Brad Lloyd was the one that went for the great one.

Nope. Smart was all over him through his Claremont contacts. The rest of the recruitment team wanted Bastinac (not just Harvey)

But if we did take Bastinac instead of Fyfe we'd have probably had the last 4 no.1 picks which is probably what Harves wanted. So then ask yourself is Fyfe worth 4 no.1 picks? Yeh actually GOOD ONE HARVES YOU CRAZY BASTARD!

It's been noted on dozens of Fyfe puff pieces since his breakout year (2nd season?) Fyfe was Phil Smart's parting legacy draft selection for freo. It's almost part of Freo folklore...

It still doesn't guarantee its correct & my understanding at the time is not as the majority, so I'm probably wrong and it certainly won't be the first time but as said who ever made it was a genius, and I'll have a tear in my eye for Morra,as we are all here knowing the best player in the comp plays for Freo.

Smart's been around since 1995. He still consults with the club regarding potential draftees from the WAFL - he is the main reason we picked up Ethan Hughes
