Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

I pose this question due to a number of factors that have recently occurred to me.

I have listed arguments for and against for both players. Please take them into consideration and try not to be be biased.

This poll is questioning who you would prefer to run out on Sunday, not what you think the selectors will do.

Hawkins
(For):
· Hawkins electrifying form in the VFL on the weekend; the first dry day he has played for a while (and the fact it was a final).
· His big body/presence will expose the Roos smallish backline
· Hawkins has kicked four goals at the MCG this year and looked quite at home.
· He has slowly built up his fitness this year and has reached a level where he can run out a game; has not been over worked this year in the seniors.
· Is usually very accountable, following his man up the ground and applying good forward pressure.
· Hard to spoil due to streangth.
· When Hawkins kicks a goal the crowed gets very involved to the point where the entire team’s confidence lifts.

(Against):
· Every time he has played against a top eight side this year he has failed to produce.
· He will upset our team structure with Nathan currently playing a lead up the ground role.

Nathan
(For):
· Hit some form against Port Adelaide last week kicking three goals in a quarter.
· Plays an important ‘lead up the ground’ role that could be considered a somewhat significant aspect of our game plan this year.
· Has a good fitness base and can run out a game.
· Takes a good defender out of the game (i.e. vs Brisbane on Saturday night)

(Against):
· Nathan has not played on the MCG this year, has not kicked a goal at the MCG for a very long time.
· Has looked a little lost at senior level since round 7 having kicked 9 goals in 11 games (excl Port) and was held goalless against the Kangaroos in round 20 – not a good sign.
· Lacks some accountability; it is often his man that sets up attacks from defence.
· Is easy spoiled when taking an overhead mark.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

I said Nathan but only on the fact that he has the morer experience but if he does fail to produce this weekend then I think Hawkins should be given a shot.
A little bit of finals experience can't hurt.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

Nathan. If Hawkins hasn't played by now (nathan hasn't been in very good form for a while) then don't chuck him into the deep end.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

Tomahawk needs to come out and slam a heap of goals in the VFL before he gets another game in the AFL should be getting a lot more goals and not passing it off so much IMO. so i picked NAB hes not hitting form at all but at least he taking a defender, and also running with them a little more mabey someone had a little chat with him .

Thomson said that Tomma is not gonna play senior this year anyway.. Nathan will be the one for the finals.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

Is it possible to play both Nablett and Hawkins? Nablett may be able to play CHB and Hawkins line up at Fullforward. I know what your thinking! It is not my ideal senario either, but it may be an option as Nablett has played CHB in the VFL.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

Nath found some great touch in last years VFL finals maybe he will step up again this year, sure would be sweet....

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

wheres the both option, we've played our best football (in the forward line) when all three have played. Putting Hawkins up there stretches the best defences let alone one lead by Farritio. Hawk deserves a shot and i think Nath would be begging for him to be included, as it would take pressure off him.

keep the faith, rgds

Umm, Shannon Watt will go on him.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

everytime Hawkins has performed good in the VFL< we bring him in and he has done nothing. he just does not have the fitness to play the type of role Nablett has, not to mention he hasn't really been tested pressure wise. Nablett on the other hand showed against Port - the second best side - what he is capable of. He has talent; that talent needs to be refined, but he still has talent.

Anyhow, my biggest argument was that that Nath has been there most of the year, and his role is important. North carved him up a few weeks ago though, so its time for Nablett to make ammends!

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

IN: Bartel, Rooke, Hawkins
OUT: Byrnes, Varcoe, Egan.

Both can play. Mooney at CHF, Hawkins at FF, Nath in the pocket. Ottens can rest in the forward line and one of those three can get a rest on the bench at the 20 min mark of every quarter.

Mackie can play as a 3rd tall down back.

Roos are shit anyway.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

hawkins did play well in the vfl ......thats the vfl he still needs to play well in more than one game he will be a better player after this year of vfl and a taste of afl and a full pre season under his belt

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

If Playfair taught us anything it was that just because you play well in the VFL doesn't mean you'll play well in the AFL.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

Yeah I dont think it would be a bad thing to have Hawkins as well; have nablett playing up the ground alot, which would also drag another defender out of our forward line. Strtech the Roos defense, especially factoring in the likes of Johnson and all that. And who knows, Hawkins might actually play really really good.

Nathan Ablett -> CHB?

Could he be the one to cover Egan, I remember him playing some great VFL games at CHB, I have been racking my brain over this and have come up with so many different scenarios, so my ins would be Rooke for Egan, Bartel for Burns & Hawkins to play CHF for Varcoe. Just another scenario to think about don't like the chances of it happening but NAB is good overhead and has footy smarts so could easily cover CHB he would probably be a good stay at home CHB as Egan is which would free up Mackie/Scarlo/Dash etc to be attacking defenders and he would command alot of respect from the Kangaroos fwds. Would we be to top heavy if its wet with NAB, Tom, Blake, Otto etc?? Probably, but is it something we could consider - thoughts?

Don't think so, Matty Egan stays on his feet while Nathan goes to ground too much to be considered for such an important role. If we are lucky enough to get well in front of the roos on sunday it could be trialled.

Re: Nathan Ablett -> CHB?

id say no.
People dont realise how important nathan is to our forward line structure.
He might not get 20 possesions or kick 4 goals per game but he takes second best defender and is a great lead up target.
Good at ground level and very team orientated we must leave things the way they are. If it aint broke.... Dont fix it!!!

Yeah, and Nathan's defensive skills are adequate at best at this stage of his career. Much more valuable for us in the forward line.
