I think the way the game has changed its a bit pointless to go Pre-AFL times. Hafey won his last flag in 74 (38 years ago).

Not saying he can't - just that in the last two decades 80% of the time the flag has been won by a coach with a premiership medal as a player.

Maybe thats because 80% of coaches hired in the first place are premiership players.........and as a result theres a very long list of failed coaches who have won flags as players, Wallace and Eade at the top.

DO you seriously think Norm Smith medallist Nathan Buckley wont be a good coach just because Anthony Rocca missed a shot on goal by a millimetre? Or that StKilda narrowly missed out on two flags because Ross Lyon never played in a premiership team?
