You are kidding yourself if you don't believe character testing is a major part of recruiting these days.

Maybe that is why Ted Parker recruited Geoff Heywood without looking at his tendency to gaze at seagulls during a game or offer hash to Jock Riley in the Club.

When did I say it wasn't?

Glad you've watched the club too. Classic movie.

Not really.

What is the whole interview process for anyway? It is like hiring for a job. You have to ask the right questions and if you recruit the wrong employee, it is on your head.
And lots of things are easily hidden in interviews. there's been plenty of players with poor attitudes drafted by all clubs, because there are clearly some traits that can be easily hidden or can't really be picked up on in any screening process. Hawthorn recently drafted a player who is about to go to jail, so should we be questioning their screening processes? You can have the best net in the world, but some fish will still slip through.

I have no doubt that Freeman would have presented very well during his interview and personally I do not hold the club responsible for not being able to foresee his decision to leave. Freeman has been with us for two years and has endured a horror run with injury. During that time his attitude towards Collingwood changed. It may be to do with the environment created by the club or it could be that he does not get along with some of the players. Maybe being in the rehab group for so long has left him isolated. Maybe he has had some personal issues. Maybe it is a combination of many things. It is not simply a case of saying that the club did not pick up on this at the interview stage. Life is far more complicated than that.
There are a lot of things like psych tests and the like.

We would spend a fortune on this stuff especially for a top 10 pick and i believe we may have stuffed up here.

Had a listen to Gary Buckernara on Cal's Podcast. He said the main factor he looks at when he interviews a potential draftee is his character. If he has character flaws, he simply doesn't recruit him.

I went and had a listen, thought it would be interesting. Fair to say you're twisting things a bit to suit your argument as usual. His exact quote when taking about player interviews is "The player make up does make up part of the package, not all of it, but it is very important"

Do you think a test or interview would reveal everything about you?

SYDNEY’S Kinnear Beatson says a draftee’s character is just as important as his skill-set when clubs are considering whether to draft him

Beatson, who helped assemble the Brisbane Lions player group that played in four consecutive Grand Finals, admitted his biggest recruiting mistakes in the past have been selecting highly-skilled players with a “questionable attitude”.

“With that character, there’s a real link between their level of competitiveness and that character — you look for things like that,” Beatson told FOX FOOTY

And that is why you need to hire the best people to do these jobs like interviewing players etc.

It is actually quite similar to the real world of employing people imo.

We havent made many mistakes in the last 10 years with our picks, so i can forgive if Freeman was a mistake.

Geoff Heywood ended up being a star.

A really good one should but i understand your point.

I dont want to sound extremely arrogant here but i have hired people for a long period of time (10 years) and think my sense of judge of character is very good. I actually dont think i have got many wrong if any.

IMO we should be focussing on why Freeman chose to leave the club. Not on his interview results.

Are you suggesting that the club knew Freeman was a risk in terms of his commitment?

I posted the link to offer a viewpoint on the importance character is placed by a recruiter when he looks to draft a player.

And I am sure the people at Collingwood have the same view.

A lot can happen to a young man's mind taken into account 2 yrs of injury, growing into adulthood and offers of big money. I can't give a toss about his future outside Collingwood .Let's hope it will be a decision we won't regret, we get a good trade for him, trade even better and move on.

I managed to find the character test used by Collingwood to assess the suitability of Nathan Freeman.

Yep, Adelaide used the highest pick they've ever used in a National Draft (7) on Laurence Angwin, who had lots of talent but turned out to be a less than perfect person. Carlton gave him a go as well, didn't work out.

He definitely didn't pump up his trade value that's for sure. Usually love Bucks media work but I'm not sure those comments help anyone.

Should have just trotted out the Hine line which was "Given the significant investment in Nathan, we will be exploring trade scenarios that are in the best interests of Collingwood".
And we still are. Hine and Balme will be the main players in the trade discussions with StKilda and not Buckley.
Buckley can have his views based on the level of professionalism demonstrated and the commitment shown to the club. There is no denying that everybody in the football industry would have raised an eyebrow on the news Freeman wanted to move on.

StKilda's investment in him is still based on his TAC year and his potential. Its not like he is 23 and has missed a significant amount of football which he may never recover from. The kid is 20 and possibly lining his pockets for the next chapter in his life if those hamstrings don't allow him to perform at the level we all hoped he would. Ability and potential will still be the main factors in his trade value which have been demonstrated by the contract StKilda have put in front of him.

Agree that it's best for all parties to move on under the circumstances.

Can't help but feel Bucks was referring to Naths alleged alcohol consumption during rehab that Scodog10 hinted at a week or so ago.

I haven't heard the interview so thanks for the tag. From what I can gather Bucks dropped the ball on this one, IMO.

I'm not going to clip anyone over the situation, but my take is that all parties have made mistakes along the way including our recruiters, sports science team, football department, Freeman, his family and his manager.

With that being the case it's best that we part ways for both club and player because another season like the last two and he loses all currency. The one thing that I'm not liking out of it is the heartburn from the fans and comments such as the ones made by Buckley don't help that element of the situation.
