There's a reason we held on to Sharrod after he cost us $500,000 in sponsorship for drink driving (even though he hadn't played a senior game at that stage): he quite simply has all the attributes needed to become an elite midfielder - pace, handling, footskills, evasion and clearance ability - and to be honest, he's well on his way there.

If you heard your name is being offered as part of a deal then for sure it would have made him more determined to succeed but a lot of other things have fallen into place ie. he has more games under his belt thus his knowledge of the game increases and with more time comes maturity and experience plus a good pre season, a bigger body and motor and a bit of self belief ....... this is the stuff Brad Scott saw in Sharrod because he was his coach .....so the gods were smiling on us the day that deal fell through....

Goes to show you never know who will explode out of the gate next year. I was for trading Wellingham, I though he was average last year and Ball would be a bigger boost. Thank god I'm not the list manager though because Wellingham suddenly looks like our best young midfielder. I dunno what work he's done over the preseason or who was helping him but he is probably THE most improved player in the comp.

I WAS GOING TO CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP IF THEY TRADED WELLO !!
sure he wasn't brilliant last year, but when he played he went in hard, was creative etc. Just look at him now ! He is one of the most respected players within the playing group. (getting a clip over the ear by that THUG Hall helped earn him so many props)

I am almost certain Wellingham was brought to the trade rooms to discuss the potential of moving to North with Scott

When the trade time was over I'm sure he wouldn't have been upset to play with a team this year that has a chance of winning a flag, over one that seems 3 years away from challenging for anything significant.

Moving to Gold Coast - if he's money hungry fair enough, but he'd get a lot more attention there.

On the B&F I'd say Wellingham has no chance of winning it. Would be surprised if at the end of the year the top 5 didn't comprise Maxwell, O'Brien, Swan, Pendlebury and Shaw. I honestly reckon our half back line is the best in the comp (so long as it doesn't include Toovey haha)

I do believe it was a combination of Ball coming (and saying your time at a club is short make the most of it), being offered for trade, maturing as a person, and the depth of the Magpie midfield (i.e. underestimated by other clubs and also needing to perform weekly to stay there) that has put him well ahead in output on 2009.

Ross Lyon, thank you so much. If we do beat St Kilda in a knockout final this year, it will be exceptionally sweet, and we will literally have you to thank for it.

Might have dodged a bullet. Now we just need Goldsack to hit his straps and the whole trade week drama will all work out nicely.
