Thought I was on the train. But when I look back in the thread I'm not seeing my posts. Maybe I posted in the VFL thread before he was drafted. I'm well and truly on the Ned side of the fence this year.

This is what I found from January 2024 in the trade thread. I liked the sound of what he brought to the table. When he was just in our VFL team.

Just had a bit of a read of the Ned Long thread on the Hawthorn board:
He was a rookie selection in 2021 and they gave him a 1 year extension so he played for 2 years mostly at VFL.
Traits: excellent endurance (ran a 6 minute 4 second 2Km time)
Not bad around goals. Played some forward time and kicked a few. Massive rig from day 1. Average speed but a good tackler. Poor agility and an ok kick. "Cripps like" was the most common comment.

Had a few good VFL games: 38 touches 12 Clearences, 12 tackles and 3 goals was his best.
Played 5 AFL games with 2 sub starts. Had trouble getting games because even when he was playing well in the VFL others playing his role were playing well in the AFL. Delisted the end of 2023.

Ned's a terrible pick for a sub anyway. 194 cm big bodied clearance machine a lock for perma inside mid! Hawks never even gave him a chance at his natural position either.

The way he moves through traffic, takes a tackle, draws a second tackler before giving it off to the player he’s created space for is very Cripps esque.

A few of his kicks forward to dangerous space were perfectly placed and resulted in goals.

Seems to have gained a yard of pace too.

Think we’ve got a live one here.

In the twos he’d pretty regularly kick a goal or two to go with his 30 possies. He translates that to AFL level then look out…

Sub against dogs but played an almost full game when Reef went down early. Based on those numbers he shouldn’t have been sub last week.

Came on and made the most of his limited minutes.

Then this week, showed why he should be in the starting line up. Can’t ignore these numbers!

After last night's performance, showing exactly what he can do, Ned's in the best 22 for the Long haul.

So, wet blanket, it was one super encouraging game, confirming a trend and a belief within the club he has this kind of performance in him.

It was a great game and the upside of what he could be is essentially everything we want next to Naicos, but let's see how he backs up against Neale, Dunkley, Ashcroft and McLuggage before annointing him.

He will need to win a lot of inside ball and have that gut busting work rate as he is not a great kick.
