No not a post calling for the re-instatement of Angwin, but rather a general observation on a couple of speedy types we have introduced this year.

Armfield. First time I have seen him live, and boy can this kid motor. I can't remember the last small defender we had with genuine pace to burn (an Alwyn Davey type who makes forwards nervous everytime the ball hits the deck). I think he can bring a hell of a lot to our defensive unit. I remember watching some Youtube highlights of his WAFL days, and he knows how to make a tackle stick as well.

Hampson. Also the first time I have seen Hampson play. In terms of development he probably has further to go than just about anyone on our list, but ____ me, if the boy can develop a footy brain we will have one unstoppable big man. I remember one long sprint he had to put in to win the ball on the wing, and he just put the ears back and burnt those around him. I can't think of another big guy in the league who even comes close to matching him for pace.

I agree - we need someone with real elite speed, an absolute jet through the midfield. Just so we can feed the ball out them, and watch them go. There are a couple of other areas we need to address as well, but some real speed would be great as well.

A Foley, Worjinski, Rodan, Lovett speed player through the mid who can actually play football would be a Godsent.

Clarke or Chambers comebacks anyone?

The last couple of years we've been looking at the cream of the crop in regards to drafts (possibly excluding last year, as we needed a ruckman), but this year I think we've got to concerntrate on drafting not necissarily a small bloke, but a quick bloke with fuel to burn.

Here's an idea... Maybe we could send one of our scouts down to say, an athletics club and draft a young 16-18 year old runner as a Rookie and work with him for a couple of years? By the time we're pressing for finals, a pasey bugger could certainly help us get the upper hand, even if it's just recieving a handpass on the Back Flank, running up the Wing and giving a short handball inboard on the Forward Flank, he could divert attention from our other "delivery men" such as Judd, Stevens, Scotland and hopefully Murphy or Gibbs, if not both!

We already have one on the rookie list, and he can play the game as well.....Aaron Joseph ;)

Ahh yes, my mistake.

Still, a second or third wouldn't be too shabby! Anyone catch Essendon in round 1 when they had a pacey side? Mix that with skill!:p

Thats what is so annoying about Carazzo. Gets plenty of the ball but every time he gets it he stops, or at best, breaks into a light jog. Gives opposition teams a chance to man up every time. Rarely does he play on or take a player on.

spot on
love hampson known him for a few years coz of my dad is friends with his grandma who lives in melbourne :D

armfield is gonna be a gun:thumbsu:

Yarran from this years draft sounds like what we need. A fast midfielder/forward with good skills and a great goal sense. Would probabley spend his first couple of years as a small forward (and we desperatey need another good one).

Played the 1st 5 games of the year in the WAFL and averaged about 16 possesions and 3 goals a game.

I have a funny feeling Yarran will be one that falls between our first and second picks.:(

Can you tell me who we're getting with our first pick? :D

What would we have to trade to get Aaron Davey from Melbourne?

They can have Fisher if they want him.

We have to cross our fingers than Benji and Joseph develop. :thumbsu:

The flipside of bringing Pfeiffer and Hadley in for Russell and Wiggins is the side will become even slower. :D :(

Walks + Benji + AJ + Hammo + Grigg + Ando = pace.

The recruiting staff/coaches did decide to really focus on speed and went for players like Benji and Ando in that draft. But obviously their football hasn't been good enough to get them even close to a senior call-up yet. Herein lies the problem.

How the Gordon Ramsay would I know?? I'm being completely egocentric and going by my rough rankings.:p

Fisher for Davey would do me (as long as we got Roughead :))

Now ABC2 has done a Steve Fosset, hopefully we get a better look at Yarran when WA play at Casey and the Dome.

Walker would still be one of our most important players if he were fit and firing. Hammo, most young ruckmen that arent' standouts, are projects as they haven't grown into their bodies yet, I'll take one standing at 202cm, 80-odd cm vertical leap and 2.82s 20m at #17 any day of the week thanks :).... Benji, Ando and AJ were taken 50+, where any player taken has obvious flaws in their game or they wouldn't have fallen that far.....again i'd rather take a punt on a bloke that can run and jump and work on their other flaws. A slow player will always be slowish at best.

I don't necessarily believe that pace is a vital factor across the team...not everyone needs to be lightning, I just think it's important to have it in the right areas.

Obviously you need a few midfielders with some dash, but a super quick small defender is always handy, and as stated, a ruckmen with rockets strapped to his feet could prove to be a huge advantage in time.

I agree. Never bagged Hammo or Walker. Big fan of what Hammo holds for the future. And fair point on Benji and Ando being late draft picks. But I was more responding to the suggestion people keep making that we do have pace because we have Benji and Ando. There is no point having pace in the magoos, we need players with pace that are good enough to play seniors...hopefully they can keep improving, but it is telling that they haven't got a run this year when we've found room for Edwards, Harltett (more games), Browne, Ellard, Armfield, Hampson (more games), Pfeiffer. Let's not get carried away over Benji and Ando.

A slow player + a good sprint coach = a faster player. I've seen guys get coaching from experienced sprint coaches take over 1-2 seconds off their 100m time and improve their 20m time considerably. Correct technique and proper training drills do wonders.:thumbsu:
