Why are the Liberals saying they want to dumb Labor’s Net Zero? When the liberals sign Australia to net zero…. It’s their policy.

Can some explain to me as if I’m a 5 year old?

Given that’s the IQ of most Liberal members……

The Liberals only “committed” to an idea of Net Zero by 2050 (the debate before this was the timeframe for the target, not so much the concept of a target, some wanted it by 2035).

It was Albanese who legislated it by 2050.

The reason why they have changed is any Liberal with any concern for climate action has basically lost their seats in the last two elections, and the only leader with any shred of actual concern for climate, Turnbull, has been expunged from the party, whereas Abbott has become ardently anti climate and is still an influential figure in the party.

Lobbying efforts by the fossil fuel industry have only increased in the last decade. With the mass loss of mostly moderate members the conservatives now dominate what’s left of the party and set its agenda.

And it’s not just being against Net Zero, you have types further right who are calling for withdrawing from the Paris agreement and ending funding of clean energy projects.

The Net Zero Australia (NZAu) Project is a partnership between the University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland and Princeton University. The Steering Committee of the Net Zero Australia Project took the highly unusual step of issuing a press statement on the 5th of November this year.

It said that "Different individuals and groups have been misrepresenting key cost estimates from the NZAu Australia Project as ‘the cost of Australia reaching net zero’. These misrepresented costs have typically ranged from $1.5 trillion to $9 trillion."

It went on to say, "‘the cost of Australia reaching net zero’ is approximately $300 billion, with all annualised energy costs falling as a fraction of the projected GDP and discounting reducing all these costs further."

The "$1.5 trillion to $9 trillion". "these projections" it says "are not indicative of ‘the cost of Australia reaching net zero emissions’ for two main reasons.":
1. "The large majority of this capital investment should be underwritten by overseas customers and not by Australians. These investments won’t occur if our export customers do not pay for them."
2. "Operating costs and fuel costs are additional to capital investments and are most significant in fossil-fuel intensive energy systems. Considering only capital investment therefore understates total costs, particularly for existing systems that feature substantial fossil fuel use."

In other words, Littleproud, Tehan and the rest of the LNP are a bunch of lying bastards.

The Net Zero Australia Project statement also added
"The NZAu Project’s commitment to sharing our inputs, methods and results openly remains, and we welcome further discussion with anyone who wishes to use our work."
"Net Zero Australia spokespeople are also available for interview on request."

The Littleproud and the LNP along with the Murdoch gutter press aren't interested.
