New Captain '09

is kane johnson goin to give up the captaincy for 09???
if so when would they make that decision?
i happen to like him as a player but he is not a very good captain an i know he is a good off field leader but really am i the only 1 who prefers an on field leader???
he doesnt exactly ooze confidence on the field (did u c him handball the ball 2 sum1 in the goal square instead of just kicking the goal himself against brisbane in the last quarter?? i nearly had a heart attack) an when its tuff and we need someone to step up its usually richo, browny or even simmonds has took a leading role but its never johnson.
very good player but cant wait for him to give up the captaincy. also who will be our new captain, newman??

from the outside looking in Chris Newman looks like a great fit for captain.

Unlike Deledio I don't really see him fade in and out of matches and he is really consistant.

I hope Johnson gives up the captaincy, its painful to see the leader of the club make so many mistakes as he does

Agreed, I think Newman will be a great captain and just let guys like Richo and Deledio go out play their own game, with an open license and no pressure of being captain.

Newman for sure, then Delidio in about 3-4 years. By then Cotchin will possibly be ready to step into a major role as well. At this point in time would not rule out Foley in some capacity either.

Agree with what you said about Richo. Newman for captain....Foley would make a good future captain too in IMO.

Newman would be an even lower profile captain than Johnson. Don't really understand the support for making him captain. Time to make the best player (Lids) captain. He's clean cut and does the inspirational stuff on field as demonstrated by his army award. Who cares if he's not the most outgoing person at the club - he just has to toss the coin, present a good image off field and be inspirational on field. He ticks all the boxes. There are god knows how many assistant coaches to do all the other crap. Time for the club to start giving off an aura of high performance, and that starts with having a high performance captain.

Na. A captain is more important than to how we present to the media/public etc. He is the one that has to inspire, teach, motivate and lead the team from within the club. So if a player doesn't have the neccessary qualities, absolutely no use making him captain as on-field we will suffer.

Not saying Lids isn't the best one for the job though.

But people say that Lids isn't a vocal guy.
Maybe we can monitor Cotchy over that time too while Richo Captained the team in his final years.

But Wallace needs, in the final year of his current contract, to take another step and give us all the impression that he is freshening up the place, and flick Johnson for 2009.
Otherwise, at the head of the playing group, we are going to look and feel like the same old stale set up.

I really agree with this bit delib...

It is the ideal time to shift the pendulum over this summer.

We have stepped up from 16th to 9th with a younger group.
Tivs, Hyde & perhaps Petts have been shown the door and a 21yo was our best player in 2008.
Time for our ageing captain to step down (or be asked to!). He can play on & "concentrate on his footy" as the common line goes if he wants but lets keep this momentum going.

Thats why, as much as I love Richo, I would prefer a younger captain to take us to the next level.

Personally I am on the Deledio train but FFS... lets keep moving Tigers!

as do I. I would like to see Lids given the gig, but I think Newy is a worthy candidate also.

Agree with all the change stuff too, now is the time to move Kane aside (i think he knows it too) and really 'change the guard'

Do you really think they'll change now and have an interim captain? I would say KJ will stay on for 1 or 2 more years before they assess who would be a good cantidate from Cotchin or Delidio. I could be wrong though. It wouldn't make sense to make Richo captain as he probably has less time left than KJ.

That said, I don't know about the leadership potential of Delidio or Cotchin. Could just as easily be someone like Kel Moore. Notice Bartel, Corey or Ablett arent captains at Geelong. Doesn't have to be the gun midfielder, could be a back-pocket.
