Does anyone know why Port always seem to have a new guernsey every year or so?

Most other clubs have kept the same one for ages and I am sure it is just like that to make people buy the new one but we can hardly start a tradition like with the prison bars like in the SANFL if they keep creating new ones

Because we're the easiest club to kick around! We wear our away/clash jumpers too much when it isn't nessecary and when the rest of Australia see us the most and it creates a bad image! That's why 2010 has been good for a lot of reasons for us, the specific stance that the new jumper will be worn "for a majority of away games" also because a clash is hardly nessecary for so many we travel to with clash strips. they are only away jumpers at the end of the day though but there is some kind of theme in it all, in that we were dished up another horrible (and the worst) looking "whitest" clash strip we've ever had in 2009 and that combined with our on-field performances resembled nothing like Port Adelaide which forced such a dramatic change in 2010, the stance on one jumper for the club and the clash truly taking a backseat for CLASHES only. it's like an identity crisis that lasted 14 years where the dust is beginning to settle...

also note that the home jumper was never "loved" by fans by many accounts but rather accepted. it looked good and with the black shorts was decent but was just never sat right did it.

away jumper 1997 - 2002, would always change as it's simply too black

Port-Away-2003.gif

away jumper 2003 which again uses black mostly and the AFL began to shift towards lights and darks

Port-5.gif

away jumper 2004 - 2006, first time a photograph was ever used on a jumper, bit of experimentation that some liked and many didn't

Port-Clash-2007.gif

away jumper 2007 - 2008... we changed to Reebok so they of course bring new designs and modifications to the jumpers. the majority probably started to get sick of Port messing with so many designs by now

Port-Clash-2009.gif

the last straw, the jumper that caused that much hate it launched a teriffic overhaul of basically all departments, arguably. NOT Port Adelaide. lasted 2009... just

best damn jumper you ever did see

Most clubs have changed their away/clash strip several times over the decade. Port started doing a 2 year change partly because manufacturers have changed and partly to try to make money. It has been a bit of bullshit marketing driven exercise. Port didn't change it's home guernsey until this year.

The new black guernsey which should be worn about 18 times a year, ie even in away games when there is no clash, and the new white clash guernsey which only has to be worn 4 maybe 5 times a year depending on who we are playing away, should be untouched for the next 20 years.

Get rid of this BS planet teal kids design a guernsey competition.

Our club had one of the best looking guernsey in the prison bar - iconic. We finally have found something that is close to it and producing a white clash (ie not an away strip) guernsey to keep the AFL happy, should mean the changes are done with.

Absolutely agree with that.

We should never again NOT wear the BiB jumper unless we are CLASHING in an AWAY game. I dont give a toss about the marketing dollar when it comes to the jumper.

The only change I'd make to BiB is to swap the teal and white Vs around, so the teal one is bottom/larger.

Plus the wider wishy washy stance on everything else that opens, shuts, squeaks and squirts - history, identity, SANFL dealings, AFL dealings (1870/1996, prisonbars).

Haysman's hard edge has been long overdue in this regard. Say what you like about Eddie McGuire, but he doesn't take shit from anyone and defends his club's interests to the death - just like we used to until our balls disappeared from roughly 2000-2008.

2 cents incoming: Love the new design, favourite one in the comp aside from the classy black & white ;)

im neither here nor there on this - but i had noticed it and wondered if it was done intentionally to ensure that the guernsey is majority black and white (like the SANFL roots) with the black and white touching rather than black and white with a teal section separating them?

i wouldnt hesitate to suggest that this is probably the absolute bare minimum of a "3rd" colour (teal) that we could get away with having whilst not incurring the wrath of the team that seems to control the afl (collingwood)

Someone already said it REH, but that is how we did get our new awesome guernsey. But I totally agree, stop changing it now. It looks sensational, and we need to wear it as much as possible.

I really like the idea of still wearing the black as our away, just with the white shorts like in the Bulldogs game, which looked great as well. The white clash should only be for a clash, if it's needed.

Keep it simple. Keep it back in black. Keep it Port Adelaide.

I want people to see us play over 20 years and know who they are watching by the jumper. I want to by my kid his first Power guernsey, and for him to keep it, and for it to still be relevant when he is remeniscing in 20 years.

Without the Planet Teal comp, we wouldn't have our current guernsey.

Sure the BIB come from a kids comp but a similar style design was submitted in a public comp back in 1995. It's just that the board, which included Boulton and Bucky, blokes I have a lot of respect for, were swayed by the argument to go for something unique to replace the unique prison bars. But the SBS design was not great for a footy guernsey. And then some of the abomination clash guernseys that occured after we ditched the initial away guernsey were an even wrse decision.

The BIB is effectively stealing the state guernsey design. the crows have the state colours we should have gone with the state design. We should have gone for something traditional like that design.

I know the girls who designed the old Ansett cup lighting bolt guernsey. They were 12 and didn't know what colours the club would chose so they used black white and silver/grey. But it was a simple, semi traditional design.

It's a pity that it took a kids competition to wake up our board and management up to get a decent design. To paraphrase George Bush - mission accomplished. We don't need to have any more competitions. Lets spend the next 20+ years building up the history, heritage and tradition of the current design. That's my main point. Don't tamper with it by having anymore kids comps or special one offs.

PMP I agree wholeheartedly with the bold bits you wrote.

to be honest that is ratshit

its our new guernsey and people want them bad..... footy season is a week away, and they say we cant buy a guernsey for another couple of months?

sponsor or no sponsor that is absolutely bloody terrible

i see we still have the old guernseys in sports shops all around the place, and i have wondered how many people would still be buying it. I wouldnt think too many

I feel we are missing some much needed revenue right now

I just remembered when Peter Rhode was on 5AA in the pre Collingwood match interview, he definitely said that the back in black jumper was going to be in the megastore available to buy before Round 1 so everyone should head in and pick one up.... want to see as many fans as possible dressed like the players in Round 1... what is this.

I thought it was optional. Buy one now with the one major sponsor (myATM) or wait until May when the second major sponsor is locked in and on the guernsey.

That was certainly what was offered to people who had already placed an order, perhaps it is not on offer for new orders?

Nope...not what was offered to me.

A few weeks ago after asking at the Power Shop about 6 I had on order, I was told that the guernseys were quite a ways away (told maybe even May). Then received a call from the club giving me 2 options

1. In May accept the guernseys with only 1 major sponsor (myATM)

or

2. wait till later in the year for the guernseys with both major sponsors.

I dont particularly mind a guernsey without another sponsors logo so accepted receiving the guernseys in May with only the 1 sponsor. Either that or the 6 kids I bought them for would have b*shed me senseless...

If we continue to use the BiB name then I insist we call the clash jumper 'white power'
White Power

No thanks. That is either going to be seen as a reference to a group of skinheads or a laundry detergent.

Could have gone with "White Power" on the Worlds Greatest Shave day and Given Surj the nickname Romper Stomper, just to show we are trying to set a good example for all! :|

The little 2 bedroomed apartment in Hong Kong is still full of membership paraphernalia that is still being sent out to new members. Once thats cleared, they can wheel the sewing machines in and start on our pre ordered guernseys. :D

Seriously tho, I think our best bet with a major sponsor is, preferably an international company wanting to enter the Oz market, or a local company wanting national exposure.

Emirates have sponsored major sports in every country they have entered (inc NZ's Americas Cup campaign) so they are not scared of splashing around the cash, and it was indeed a coup for the Colliewobbles to get that. Wish we could do something similar.

Already established local companies with international business such as Qantas are already tied up with truly international sports such as Rugby Union and soccer, so they are not really an option.

With the increase in mining operations in SA starting, most of which are owned by overseas interests, there could surely be opportunites there. For example, the locally created company for a Chinese owned enterprise could easily up their profile so they look a bit better than that company which is loading dusty iron ore in metropolitan areas.

I guess that what I am saying is that targetting Farmers Union, Coopers, West End, etc is not going to work in the long term. We need to target some new, or emerging, high prophile organizations.
