THE Swans continued their Irish love affair yesterday by signing up Gaelic football sensation Chris McKaigue for next season.
As hinted by Murphy to No1SwansFan.

How do we pronounce that....Ma-ckay? Or Mac-kee?

Good luck to the Irishman

And Even better news about Nick Smith signing an extra 2 years!!!!

From hating the prospect of moving out of Melbourne to absolutely loving it here, He has come in leaps and bounds this year. Onya Smitty!

he looks a little like marty clarke in that photo

interesting to hear people apprehensive and reluctant with the irish experiment.... i still think its a great iniative, you win some, you lose some.... but if we can get a few tadgh kennelly's from every few then we would of done well all up

best of luck to him, and hope he can do the club and himself proud :)

McKaigue sounds familiar, did he play in the IR series last year? I remember there were a couple of standouts the commentators made the point of how they'd be good over here.

Very happy with the pick up, hopefully unlike our other Spuds, he isn't an Inury-Prone Spud.

isnt there any decent footballers to sign in our own country??

I'm very much leaning this way surely we could give someone a go who lives in Australia and has grown up with footy. For every Kennelly it seems there may be a handful of duds. Hope I'm wrong.

I guess it comes down to the concessions of recruiting people who have never played the game or not affiliated to a footy club for x amount of years.

Surely there is a huge cost in personnel and time for someone to mentor and look after the welfare of these guys when they could be assisting with established talent.

That said I'm sitting here excited about Kennelly possibly returning if he has an All Ireland win. I'm a sucker for the romantic story. I was over the moon when I found out Capper was returning to the Swans after the Brisbane Bears nightmare. Unfortunately by that time the damage was done thanks to those arseh*le bears players being dead against Capper from the start as he was on big money. Brad Hardie would take snap shots from the boundry rather than kick to Capper,

Whoops I'm always off on an off topic tangent.

Exciting, but he looks like he came from the new Twilight movie. Any chance he could eat a sandwich or two?

and I'll try really hard not to scare off this new Irish boy

If you were the problem, then I think we wouldn't of had so many of the young players re-sign a few back;)

I just think the Coney and Murphy took the easy option of going home rather than attempting to earn their spot in the senior side squad and then a senior game. But no great loss as they didn't play a game. Kennelly just left a year early to do what we knew what he was always hoping to do and seeing as he stayed, put the hard yards in and played in a Premiership Team and became a Life Member of the club no one can question his decision.

As for the new kid, well if he comes, stays and plays senior football. Great. If not, no big deal depending on what happens.

The experts are saying this draft is only mid strength. The gold Coast also get to participate in the rookie draft this year (not the national but the rookie). It means the talent level at the bottom end of the rookie draft may be weak. If Jake and KT are promoted, Murphy having gone home and Coney delisted added to the fact it wasn't full to start with there is room on our rookie list for a gamble.

The good thing in this situation is he isn't coming over because Kennelly is here, he's coming over knowing there's no other Irish players on our list. Reduces the chance of another mass exodus.

But he's agreed to come knowing there won't be any Irishmen over here, means he doesn't seem likely to become homesick. Maybe he knows something we don't about Kennelly though. ;)
