Is it just that we are all getting older, or is most of the 'new' music being released and played on the radio complete crap?

Is musical taste like dad's trousers? Does it just stagnate in one era and genre?

Most new music to me is just derivative and seems to have been done before, and I find it endlessly frustrating that it is becoming increasingly difficult to go to a store and buy new music without feeling like I am betraying my previous good taste. Does anyone else feel like this, or am I just being a stick-in-the-mud?

There are many quality exceptions, but i feel like the new music that I DO but is just reminiscent of music I already have.

I'd say 90% of people feel exactly the same way.

You just need to look in the right places , there is lots of good new things coming out.

Oh yeah, I'm looking in the right places, I can get enough indy stuff and back catalogs to keep me satisfied. I just mean 'new' music- bloody Jet, Scissor Sisters, the Vines, White Stripes all of that. I don't dislike the music, it just sounds derivative, pre-packaged and ready to go for all the iPod toting-alienated-from-society-drones.

I wish I was musically talented so that I could write something truly new and exciting.

I empathise (and I AM older) with you completely. In truth, its probably a bit of both. Having been a "Music lover" for nearly thirty years, I used to scoff at my old man when he'd tell me that most of the music I was enjoying had been done before (different packaging for a younger generation). He had this neat trick of getting me to play my current fave record, and then follow it up with something which usually predated the sixties. In the vast, unswerving majority of cases, he was correct. Example, one day I was listening to The Smiths, and especially admiring Johhny Marr's guitar playing. Enter the old man who promptly informed me that this "so called" modern guitarist was just reprising a whole bunch of Bo Diddley riffs. And here was I, too young and stupid to know who Bo really was. I was never able to listen to The Smiths again. Bo Diddley on the other hand...

You saw the light.

Just a question: forget Marr's guitar playing, what on earth made you think that Morrissey's vocals talents were any better than atrocious? Elliott Goblet can sing beter than him.

Yep, and then some coke snorting A&R Bloke would gobble you up and have you spewing out the type of music you hate. ;)
Emphasis on the word "gobble". Record deal don't just come for free these days.

Funnily enough, it wasn't the Morrissey factor for me. I just enjoyed the musicianship of his band. I have always hated Morrissey (I just happened to be someone that thought The Smiths would have been better without that miserable Putz). If it weren't for that gimp, The Smiths would have been an even better band. Like I say, I'm a "music lover", and musically speaking, the instrumentallists in the band were better than the singer/lyricist/poet/jerk. Alot of drugs helped me through it all. ;)

I'm only 19, and I hate most music produced after about 1998. Utter crap. Give me the 60's-70's anyday, the golden era of music. It'll never be as good again.

This is all a bit cynical isn't it? There's plenty of good stuff being released amongst all the garbage. Does it really matter if lots of catchy little hooks are borrowed from songs most have never heard before? Doesn't worry me.

I've bought about 50-60 CD's in the last 6-7 months and only one is a new release. I'm starting to find artists that I wasn't fond of as a kid, I'm listening to again and quite enjoying. XTC and Elvis Costello are two such artists.

people are so stupid.
so many people dislike things just to be different.

oh i can't like this, i saw a 15 year old boy with baggy pants singing it.
i can't like this, its been marketed to a 17 year old girl.

its just stupid.

there is a tonne of great new music.
just as good as before.

because something has 'been done before' can't it be done again and still be good?

i think grandpa simpson said something like
"the waffle iron is just a toaster with a clock put in it"

what you guys say, is as stupid as that.

I agree, most new music is pants.

What you should do is get a friend with a large music collectioin to put it onto your computer to double the size of the amount of music you can listen to so you don't have to worry so much about the new cr ap that is released nowdays.

But while I agree with you, you are a stick in the mud.

Well if you source your current music by listening to the charts or watching musci shows, you are going to end up with pre packaged crap that all sounds the same...

In the 60's there was tonnes of pre processed crap that the "true" music fan hated, and I am sure back than they were all listening to Jazz records going why isnt todays music as good as it was bakc in blah blahs day, Bubblegum pop is actually a title put on music from the sixties, and the same arguments where heard back than

This argument reminds me of how ********ed off I get everytime rolling stone magazine brings outa greatest 100 albums of all time issue, and the top 10 is all rock albums form the 60's the top 50 all albums from the 607-'s etc.
People will always like older music because there is a nostalgia attached to it, as well as the quality of the musicianship, that is something recently released records cant compete with (give em time).

Man listening to the Stone Roses first album now gives me chills but when I first heard it I thought, oh yeah this is all rite, but its nowt special. add nostalgia and pow...anyway I reckon those of you who reckon Modern music is rubbish are just not listening hard enuff. Mybe they arent making music you like, doesnt mean its crap.
