Does anyone know how the new PP system works. Up until 2005 priority picks were taken at the beginning of the draft (picks 1, 2, 3 say), then last year they were taken after Rd 1 (picks 17 and 18), now this year it's something to do with winning less than a certain number of games over 2 years and you get it at the beginning of the draft, plus then if you win less than a 5 games in a year, you get one at the end of round 1???

Can anyone clarify how it works, cos I am very confused... :o

If you win 4 games or less in two consecutive seasons you qualify for the old priority pick, which comes before the first round. So Carlton currently have pick one and pick four, but if they win another game they will only have pick 3. It's a silly system really. I'm not sure if Carlton will also get a priority pick after the first round if they don't win another game, surely they won't?

So this is how I see it, according to todays ladder

If Carlton don't win another game and Melbourne and Richmond win 4 or less-

1 carlton priority pick

2 richmond first round pick
3 melbourne
4 carlton
5 fremantle
17 2007 premiers

18 priority pick richmond
19 priority pick melbourne

20 2nd round pick richmond
21 melbourne
22 carlton
23 fremantle

If Carlton do win another game, but richmond and melbourne still win 4 or less games-

1 richmond first round pick
2 melbourne
3 carlton
4 fremantle
16 2007 premiers

17 priority pick richmond
18 priority pick melbourne

19 2nd round pick richmond
20 melbourne
21 carlton
22 fremantle

So based on today's ladder, we want carlton to win another game, because it moves our picks from 5 and 23 to 4 and 22. Obviously though it is in carlton's best interest not to win, because 4 points would see them go from having picks 1 and 4 to pick 3.

They change the rules on clubs getting priority picks at start of the draft if they win less than 5 games to the start of round 2 as you said picks 17,18,19 etc to avoid tanking less attractive getting priority picks at the start of Round two. Didn't take into account that caaarlton wouldn't climb up the ladder and are now trying hard not to tank their way into a priority pick.

But to protect clubs who win less than 5 games in two consecutive yrs(they bllody need help!!) then they qualify for a priority pick at start of draft but i don't think they(lets say its Caaarlton) won't get the prioirty pick as well as getting another at prior to the sart of round two like Richmond and melbourne will if the bottom 3 are Caarton finish with 16, melb 12 and richmond 6 then

Priority pick Caaarlton
Pick 1 Tigers
Pick 2 Demons
Pick3 Caarlton
Pick 4 Dockers?(5th overall)
etc

Pick 16 Premiers
Priorty pick Richmond
Priority pick Melb
Pick 17 Richmond
Pick 18 tigers
Pick 19 Caarlton
Pick 20 Dockers??

Thanks for that. I has thought that clubs only received a PP after two years, but then I was thrown off a bit when i read a Richmond supporter talking about getting a PP, and some carlton poster talking about getting first pick.... but now it makes more sense.

So we really want Carlton to win another game to give us as high a pick as possible to at least salvage somthing semi-positive from this year's efforts... :o

Pick 4 will be bound to net us one of Cotchin, Masten or Palmer, surely. :thumbsu:

Picks 4, 22, 38 are okay...

it would be nice if we could repeat 2003 - 3 picks in Top 20 (4 in top 30) + Peake F/S + Johnno PSD. Unfortunatley it's not gonna happen... :(

If we don't win another game we will most likely get pick 1 and 3. This is because Melbourne would almost certainly move above us if they were to beat us in round 22.

yuck :thumbsd: i cant believe were looking at a top 5 pick

(even though it will be exciting come draft day)

Yes, it's odd to be thinking about a top 5 draft pick, isn't it?:o

Carlton weren't too bad on the weekend, but will probably fall away now. The Melbourne game is their big chance for a win, although Melbourne may in fact be better than the Blues ATM.

Whether it's pick 4, 5 or 6 (I suspect we may overtake one team), this is the important part:

DON'T F*CKEN TRADE THE PICKS AWAY.:p

Matt Carr and pick 22 for pick 15 or so. Any takers? :p

We need to pull a swifty ala Koops for pick 19 (which was Mundy) :thumbsu:

PS: Mundy bashers need not reply to this.

I think the priority picks are after the first round now. So even if Caarrlton do get one it will be pick 17.

Unless they have 4 wins this year... as above, if they have 4 then they get pick 1 as a priority.

I think Schammer plus a pick might tempt some. He's a good player but not very quick, and a bit light. He's very nippy which might suit some slower, heavier teams like Melbourne and Sainters.

With Bell, McManus and Cook almost certainly departing at seasons end, why would we trade a midfielder? Surely it makes more sense to trade Murphy, Campbell or Murphy? We have a plethora of guys who are 188cm+.

I'm confused. By not very quick you mean he's not very nippy. And by very nippy you mean he's not very quick??? I thought nippy = quick?:o

Or a slower, heavier team like Freo?

I'm with Dom, I don't think we can afford to trade any midfielders. I'd rather not trade anybody at all, but if we can get a first rounder for Kiwi it might be tempting.

One thing's for sure we should use every pick we've got on midfielders this year.

On the upside, at least Freo should be guaranteed on of Masten, Palmer or Morton. They have seen too many quality local youngsters go after they have had their pick.

From a Carlton perspective, hopefully they get pick 5 after a Blues PP
