It was obvious the new centre ruck contests were a bit of a mystery ladt night. The talls Gawn and Cameron were trying differdnt ways to compete without breaking the new rules. The likes of those mentioned and rucks like the brutes, Darcy, Xerri, etc, will mo longer be a necessity at centre contests.
Could we see much smaller players with big leaps take over the centre circle!
Thecstand rule seemed as if nothing changed.
The time reduction kicking for goal was obvious. The kick in seemed a little more rushed as well.
Last touch only came into affect twice I think. Have to wait and see on that one.
The bug bear if reviews came tovthe fore once. Took at least two minutes to make a decission on a touched ball. Have to fix the bunker or get the footy chipped. Have a couple of reviews and we look at maybe ten minutes wasted.
Any thoughts?

Why not scrap all umpires and have AI umpire the game

Would be better and unless the afl could convince AI to be biased towards certain clubs then it's a fair game.
Sadly because AI literally never produces the same outcome repeatedly, that amazing wondrous word 'interpretation' will continue to do more heavy lifting

Hopefully the centre throw up ruck rules quickly revert back to what they were.

Bit ridiculous for the AFL to make such a big change which clearly advantages one type of ruck over another.

Worried for Darcy if not.

A couple of examples here where Jeff White shows there's different ways to counter jumping rucks.

Was always perplexed on why they changed the ruck rule back, where it was adjusted because of player safety

Now player safety is second to aesthetics as the AFL doesn't like the look of grappling and stoppages

I'm one for player safety, adjust back and see what other tweaks can be done to encourage all types of ruck shapes

Let them wrestle and scrag, but pay the first free kick. Up to the umpires. A player wraps his arms around his opponent, blow the whistle and pay the free. A player puts his arm over the oppositions shoulder. Blow the whistle and pay a free. It happens all over the ground in other contests, why allow ruckmen to blatany flaunt the rules. Every time in a ruck contest there are infringements.
The AFL have told the umpires to turn a blind to blatant infringements.

Do we actually have the updated rules though?

At present laws of the game 2026 on the AFL site does not appear to have the vast majority of rule changes within them.

anyone else see that ruck farce on display between Grundy and the ruck for Giants in their preseason game?
Ball was thrown up but was a metre on Grundy's side of the line by the top of the trajectory
So Grundy stepped out of the way and let the Giants ruck step over the line so he could actually reach it.
Grundy was awarded the free.
What an embarassment for the clowns that play with the rules at AFL House. Someone needs replacing

Replace the entire AFL hierarchy
