The Simpsons unveils new opening credits

After 20 years and 429 episodes, cartoon television's most iconic opening sequence has been given a makeover.
The opening credits for The Simpsons has been reworked to coincide with the television show's premiere in high definition.
And it comes complete with a none-too-subtle Bart writing "HDTV is worth every cent" on his school blackboard while the boxy old television set in the Simpsons’ family living home is replaced with its upmarket, flat-screen cousin hanging from the wall.
The gist of the opening sequence remains the same — each of the Simpsons family members races home through Springfield to gather on the couch — a number of details have been changed.
When the opening frame zooms in from clouds to reveal the town of Springfield, school bullies Jimbo and Kearney can now be seen sawing the head off the Jebediah Springfield statue in the town square.
Spaced-out school bus driver Otto decides to swallow the glowing nuclear rod that lands in his bus after Homer throws it from his car, while Maggie now has a run-in with her despised mono-browed baby nemesis at the supermarket.
Several characters not seen in the old sequence, which was last changed in 1990, are also now introduced to viewers in the opening credits.
Sideshow Bob takes a swipe at archenemy Bart with a sword, the Rich Texan character is seen firing his pistols into the air and a weary Apu is seen cradling his baby octuplets.
The Simpsons family first appeared in a series of animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in April 1987.
Two years later the half-hour series was a worldwide hit, before The Simpsons Movie grossed over $800 million worldwide last year.

Simpsons Opening Sequence undergoes permanent makeover

The Simpsons' opening sequence has undergone a permanent makeover in celebrating the transition to HDTV.

Not sure whether I like it.

Thoughts?

Re: Simpsons Opening Sequence undergoes permanent makeover

The Simpsons is a parody of its former self, what's amazing is that it is still on. It's gotta be at least 5 years past its expiry date. What used to be a hillarious and intelligent show has now become a random collection of pop culture jokes and cheap shots. It's gone from a legendary show to just another crappy one. It is definitely time to die.

family guy version 2?

Season 10 was the downhill slide by 12 1 in a season was good the rest were rubbish. It should of ended after season 10 or 9.

I'm not going to talk about the massive decline of The Simpsons, I'm gonna talk about the intro that was shown here.

It is WAYYY too slick, the animation is looking too advanced for what it should be, it needs to hold on to that nostalgic feel, somewhat like what South Park has done with it's walking animations.

Way too slick for mine, and no need for the change in opening sequence.

in regards to the intro, i didn't mind it until they started chasing the couch, that seemed to drag
That was just that episodes couch gag.

Didn't like the intro. Too much going on, way too busy. It's like they've tried to cram in every character.

Matt Groening is a ****ing moron. The Simpsons was a great show that should of ended 9 (give or take) years ago.

But no... the ****er just couldn't do it. He just HAD to keep making the show because he wrongly thought it could still be as good as it was even though all the original writers had long left and all the juice was gone

The show these days is just a 3rd rate version of Family Guy. But Family Guy is actually funny. Family Guy has always been about pop culture references and weird shit happening for no reason. It's its whole gimmick and what it runs on.

But The Simpsons had heart. It had soul. The characters had depth. The characters acted like idiots of course but they were full of heart and tried their best which is what made them so endearing. Now they're just morons in every way (Homer) or just constantly whinging and getting on your nerves (Marge). Where as an 'old' episode would end with a characters hugging or remembering things fondly, 'new' episodes end with full idiocy. And the plots that change half way through an episode, ****, don't even get me started...

This new intro pretty much kills the only real link between the 'old' episodes and the 'new' episodes. The character names are still the same, but the two 'shows' (so to speak) are just so far apart it's not even funny, it's just completely sad.

At the risk of sounding melodramatic, the horrible downfall of The Simpsons is one of comedy's greatest tragedies.

That's a tad OTT as the classics will always be there it's just that we also have a decade worth of crap which we can ignore

All great shows decline but some don't know when to call it quits. Even Seinfeld would have become ordinary had it continued a few more years.

I like it (the new intro that is). A few of the new bits work pretty well - mainly Bart landing on Barney, Otto eating the rod, Maggie shaking her fist at the baby and especially Homer getting hit by the car.

The only bit I really don't like is when it flashes over the field to their house as they pull up at the end and you can briefly see about 100 characters standing there. That just seems like a pointless, messy, try hard effort to get every character on screen.

Family Guy is even worse than The Simpsons these days, although the latest episode was actually pretty funny.

It's always been like that though.

As a complete Simpsons tragic. I collect simpsons memborabilia, know all the episodes from the first ten seasons backwards. I've always defended the show just based on how great it was and the impact it had on my life but watching this new intro made me feel physically ill. They've crossed the line the show must die and die now
