Mr Barnett and transport bosses also admitted they would be urging the AFL not to schedule more Friday night games at the new stadium - regardless of the success of the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers - because of the logistical problems it could present.

I find this a real negative from Mr Barnett and the state gov. Friday night games are great and should be endorsed as they bring in more revenue to the clubs than Sunday games.

Does the gov. of WA really care?

If you live in WA then you should know that Barnett couldn't give a flying **** about anything except for mining and education. I find it funny how much support he has, it just shows how transfixed WA people are with mining I guess. Having met Barnett several times in business settings can say he is one of the most arrogant, condescending, snobs I have ever met.

What makes you think he cares anything about education?

Guess it depends what time the game starts. A 5.30 pm start so it matches up with a 7.30 pm TV broadcast in the eastern states would be a bit problematic. A 7.00 or 7.30 pm start would work better, but I'm not sure how much say the TV networks have in it.

I'm pretty sure that the networks have almost all the say in it. It's why any games played over here on a Friday will start @ 5.30pm - 6pm WST so that the 7.30pm EST primetime slot is filled. It's not what's best for the local populace but what's best for the everyone.

^^ Yep thats the issue we have with all events over here.. the BBL starting at 5pm WST being a prime example.

Having said that, it would be nice to have a premier who has even a passing interest in sport

I guess we'll just have to put up with the inconvenience of added congestion for the few Friday night matches we get .

50,000+ people trying to get from Work to the new stadium at the Eastern end of the city by public transport (remember parking for only 1000 cars) for a 5.30 to 6 pm start during peak hour is problematic for the city bus/train stations and capacity anyway you look at it so I tend to agree. Whether the AFL listens or not is another Q.

$300 million for public transport infrastructure to the new site - Cockburn wouldn't have needed anything spent, just saying.

IMO, best premier we have had in my lifetime, but this is a crock.

(i'll go get back in my FEL and move some big rocks around a bit)

If we scheduled all home matches at 2am on wednesday morning then I can't see any major issues with traffic, problem solved /end thread
I should be premier :D

Free parking on the Kwinana Freeway and just walk the rest?

The poor access into and a lack of parking at the Burswood site has been known for a long time. Personally, I will give the new stadium a year. However, if getting to and from the game frustrates me then I will just forget the whole thing.
For what it's worth, I think that access to Subi is one of its advantages. I know that people will counter this with what they think are its disadvantages, but I want to focus on the point of this thread - access to the stadium.

It depends what direction you're coming from, and where you want to go after the match. For me it will be a vast improvement over going to Subiaco.

There is no one location that suits everyone.

Does anyone know if you will able to catch a train directly to the Burswood stadium from the Kwinana/Mitchell line?

That would be the main thing really, do not want to have to switch trains in Perth to get across there.
Cockburn would of have been walking distance from the train station already there on the Freeway and since games are on weekends the carparks at the stations are empty. I will be ok with the new stadium provided the trains are not too much hassle and go directly through on footy specials.

Might ride to some games if timing is right along the river.

Would of been a shame to put it in Cockburn, middle of nowhere nothing to do after or before games. At least at burswood the city is right there. I've been to a few stadiums overseas in the middle of nothing and its a hollow feeling before and after games, walking out into suburbia/a paddock/industrial area and no where to go except home.

Burswood was a great choice, and Freo and WC dont get many friday night home games anyway so I cant see the issue.

Just been reading through the transport plan published today. About page 11 onwards in this .pdf http://www.perthstadium.com.au/assets/files/Perth Stadium Transport - Public PDP.pdf

  • Football specials to/from Fremantle will run direct to the stadium without stopping in Perth central.
  • Football specials to/from Clarkson/Butler (Yanchep?) will also run direct to the stadium without stopping in Perth central.
  • Armadale/Thornlie passengers will get direct services (obviously).
  • Passengers from Mandurah will need to change trains at Perth central.
  • Passengers from Midland will have two options - get off at East Perth and walk 25 minutes using the existing pedestrian walkway under the rail bridge; or travel all the way into Perth central and change trains.
Football specials will also avoid stopping at Claisebrrok and McIver.

There will be additional sidings between the stadium and Victoria Park station to bank up a couple dozen trains waiting for the game to finish, so they can come in and load on 2-minute intervals.

In the future, the Thornlie and Mandurah lines will be linked at Cockburn Central, allowing direct services via the Thornlie line. But this will be done when it gets done, not part of the scope of the stadium works.

Does anybody seriously believe the new stadium will be up & running by 2018?
Even then 5 years to build a stadium seems ridiculous to me. In just about any other western city in the world I reckon a stadium of this size would be up in 2, maybe 3 years. Just seems crazy that it takes so bloody long to build any major infrastructure in this state. (God, look at our airports, badly need 2 new airports, the International in particular is an embarrassment.)
Even worse, if we get a change in government Labor will stuff around even further, more studies, more debate on location, more contracts to design, more time to actually build the bloody thing.
Call me cynical but I just can't see it happening by 2018.

The international airport is sleepy hollow, and as much as you complain about other places getting stadiums quicker, well I think very very few will be of the same quality, in such a beautiful location and being built alongside quite a number of major projects. The thing is, all this resource money being used to fund the thing, is coming out of an industry which competes for the same workforce and construction equipment that the government will use to build it. Also there is the fact that in Australia we will do the due diligence and not rush and ruin the job, whereas in other places they throw up white elephants in the middle of nowhere without the groundwork (instead we take it easy and chuck an extra few hundred mil on the price).

Honestly, its gonna be a pretty great stadium.

Yeh I hope the liberals get it up and going before the state labour party becomes competent and threatens an election win, Im sure they hate the idea of Barnett being able to claim major infrastructure projects..

It is frustrating to me that we have to wait till the 2018 AFL season. Maybe they don't want us to get our hopes up, but you'd think 3 years would be plenty of time - say for the start of 2016?

Pretty sure it is being put out to public tender to actually build it. Any private sector builder worth their salt that successfully bids would surely have the plant equipment to build it. And I am not buying the "this is Australia we do due diligence" & don't build white elephants thing.
It is not only other countries that build stadia quickly to a high quality standard. Other states would have this thing done & dusted pretty quickly too. Etihad is a very high quality stadium that was started in Oct '97 & completed in 2000. (yes they had surface issues, but the thing was up & running inside 3 years.) AAMI Park Stadium was also up & running inside 3 years. Those are just 2 examples inside Australia, let alone any from other western countries.
