Yes, l know... l was continually bashing the value of Newman moving into the middle all pre-season, but here's my thoughts:

The Kanga's win and lose games by how well their midfield is going. Its as simple as that... Rawlings, Grant, Harvey, Wells and Smith determine whether they win or lose.

Their forwards are never going to smash you and they're defence are always going to let goals in. I'm going to go against everything l've said in the pre-season, but l honestly reckon this is a game that we push Lids out to the HBF-wing, and move Newman into the midfield. Newman covers for Johnno, Lids gets more into the play running off the half-back flank or out on the wing and either Tivvo or Morton position themselves on the HFF.

Newman could probably run with Harvey or Smith and also cause them trouble the other way - something Harvey is absolutely TERRIBLE at - always has been unaccountable. You whack Lids into a genuine centreman/ruckrover position and he immediately gets tagged and sort of cancels that move out.

Let him chop em up running off the flank or out wide with his pace and let Newman with his exeperience fill the gap the Johnno was playing - and he has far better footskills :thumbsu:

I've got no problems with this at all!! The lad has got more heart than Phar Lap and I still remember that run down chase and tackle in the Ireland game a few years back. He's quick enough and strong enough with good skills and nouse to beat all their mids.

Now, I'd stick Lids on the back flank to cover for newie coz he will be sorely missed and stick morton onto the HFF. I reckon Lids would create some tremendous burn from HB, we've seen him do it before and Morton gets a chance to show his real wares in the real deal.

Bring it on I say, North are not that good and neither are we but we're getting there. We played a half last week, hopefullythis week we'll bump it up to 3/4 and we'll win.

Him or Raines

He need a hard body in there with Johnno out, and these two are both fully filled out. Raines probably has more potential to clear the ball, but Newy has more leadership and better skills

Raines looked good in the 2nd half last week and was crucial to our victory and despite the criticism of his kicking that goes on around this board his kicks were penetrating and he is good at spotting targets further up the ground.

I think both can fill the gap and will be rotated as needed

A lot of good suggestions from all you guys...Hey Terry if your watching?just one thing to remember North love this sort or shit they're going through, backs to the wall, people writing them off already and Daniel Wells copping it from the media(poor game).:(We have to break them early and don't give those Shinboners a sniff...just grind them to the ground and keep grinding!.

i always thort lids would be good in the half back area get him runnning and taking bounces maybe on a wing though so he doesnt have to be as accountable for his player and newman into the midfield didnt have very good game on thursday so get him into the middle and get him into the game more:thumbsu:

i think deledio would be moved into the midfield before newman. IMO he wont get the rawlings tag because foley at the moment is the better and more damaging player. even if the tag is going lids way theres no point in hiding him from his prefered and best postion because he has been shut down multiple times before. he has to learn to break a tag one day

Very true and agree with you about Lids having to learn to get past the tag. However, when a game you know is going to be won and lost in the centre before the ball is even bounced, you go with what you know is your best move. Dont experiment and hope for the best... not in round 2 anyway.

Here are my thoughts, why do we want every player to be in the midfield, Newman is an awesome backline player - why would we give up a strength, when we have many players that can fill Sugar's spot.....

Polo and Cogs, even Hyde.

Thats what i reckon.

Thanks... l only want Newman in there for one week and its partly because he's defensive pressure is - as you say - awesome. Others have their preferences as well.

Johnson was our defensive midfielder, my preference is Newman to replace that. Quite simple really.

Thank-you for your thoughts ;)

Newman is damaging running out of defence and there is no need to chuck him in the midfield. Deledio could be used in the midfield, but i reckon hes gonna be very hard to match up on in the forward line.

Personally newman to midfield raines to permanent h-back pretty encouraging solution. My biggest thing in the midfield is lets continue jackson's developement and give him along with Mitchell, one of the best clearance players,Harris, to follow around. The Roo's are not that dis-similar to carlton in that all the clearance work is dependant on one player.
Our biggest problem mid-field wise might be our wings, lets see lids, Petts and Browny rotate through there. worked last week when brown and Petts worked through there ?

Newman's defensive pressure is pretty average. It is his ability to run off players and use the ball well that are his strengths. I don't see him in a tagging role.
