Country club unfazed by late Blue cancellation

Brendan Fevola, Nick Stevens and Heath Scotland were booked to appear at the sportsmans' night for Port Fairy Football Club last night. The club had sold about 200 tickets but had to cancel it because Carlton coach Brett Ratten forbade the trio from making the four-hour drive from Melbourne to Port Fairy.

"I found out about it on Wednesday and I said, 'No one's going'," Ratten told 3AW. "Out of eight weeks, we've got four interstate trips, and one that's equivalent to a plane flight is not on the cards for us."

Port Fairy president Damian Gleeson said the club had booked directly with the players several months ago, through a friendship with Stevens. "We don't have an issue with Carlton. They've obviously got to run their club … Unfortunately, Brett Ratten and the coaching panel have basically put a curfew on the players," he said.
Now for that game plan we're missing...

Bit annoyed with this by Ratten TBH, I think that if you make an committment to an country club, which I'm sure would be struggling with money issues at this moment in time, it wouldn't have hurt to let the boys go out and do a sportsmans bar night there ..

Opposite man is here. :p :D

The players made the committment without telling the club.

These three players have a history of celebrating hard off the field.

This year if the rumours are correct.

Carlton owes this club nothing.

This shouldn't be anything out of the norm for a professional footy club, but this is a small step in the right direction.

Correct. Besides all else, those three would ****ing destroy Port Fairy! :o

People on here are angry with the club and Ratts for saying no??

I'm happy that Ratts has said no, it means he is treating the games and player performace/condition seriously. We should be happy Ratts doesn't want these players driving 4 hours one way for a show and tell session which doesn't prove worth for our finals aim.

I'm aware country and local clubs need sport nights with afl players past and present, but at the end of the day Carlton is most important!!

When I heard Ratts on 3aw on the way to the game say this, I was soo happy. It's the first time I've seen him put his foot down with Fev.

Also, I don't give a F*** about this local club, all I care about is Carlton.

It's great to see Ratts thinks the same way and is doing everything he can for OUR club and it's 40,000 members!

Good to see Ratts cracking down, imagine going to Port Fairy for a piss up without asking the club. No wonder we have been so shit for so long, and as usual it's the usual suspects.

Should BF send bluegal, sublime and HBF to Port Fairy as substitutes?
agree
Just bluegal would suffice. :D
agree more but we could do without that scandal!

Having had much to do with the club and getting events sorted I must say we have never run into the coach having to make a call on things. He does have input on kick arounds with the kiddies on what goes on but there are people at the club paid to make theses decisions and sort out such events. Ratts should have his mind on other things. Somebody either the players or the officials dropped the ball on this one and created poor publicity that should not have eventuated. Feel sorry for the country club for having to cancel at the last minute. Couldn't we have rustled up a few old vets like Mil Hanna and Fraser Brown (always happy to get on the turps those 2)?

They would have had a poker game at the end of the night to win back Fev's apperance fee anyway.

thankyou and goodnight - you have been a great audience

The lack of support here for Grass Roots football is disturbing ..

FWIW Ratts didn't say no, because of the players involved, if you read it correctly, it is because we are playing 4 interstate games in 6 weeks (or something like that) and the extra travel involved to get down to PF FC would have taken it out of the boys ...

I hope they can go and do it later in the season though ..
What you have to take into account is that there would have been a lot of Carlton fans down that way, esp kids who would have liked to have met/seen the players as well.

Too bad!

It's not in the best interests of the CFC so get stuffed Port Fairy.

We are Carlton F*** the rest

I don't think the club is anti - the event at all. It is a great PR exercise and vital the club sells itself with current stars esp to the next generation. But time and place for everything and procedures to follow. I am sure the club will try to make amends with the country club.

It was not Port Fairy's fault. Have you ever been part of such a group? They were given a commitment which in effect is a business agreement. In regular business dealings there would be hell to pay. Agree CFC is more important but fair go. Somebody should be held responsible for this dare I say fiasco!

Fair enough,
Yes am I just about to attend a club function actually, and have been previously involved in organising club events and I am aware of the costs of running a local footy club. But as a Carlton member, that has nothing to do with the country club in question, I am very happy with the way Ratten handled it.

I do agree with a post above that it shouldn't be Rattens resoniblitly to be running around looking after the players, surely some one else could do this.

We actually have several people at the club doing this. A new team this year and they seem to be pretty good thus far so I am perplexed how this occured to be honest. It almost feels like a PR exercise for the power of Ratts!

Correct. Ratts made precisely the right call particularly as Stevo didn't even bother to inform the club until practically the last minute - almost as an afterthought. What is this Stevo ****ing amateur hour!?:mad:

C'mon cp, you're not naive.

This isn't about the four hour trip.

If's it's an 8 hour round trip, I doubt that Fev, Scotland and Stevens would return on the same day and be home in bed by one..

Stevens has friends at the Port Fairy footy club...

Letting these players go to this sportsman's night is tantamount to the Blues saying Here's some fuel for your kindling and have a good night out.
I hope they can go and do it later in the season though ..

The people who bought tickets get their money back and the three players send Port Fairy an autographed jumper & football to auction.

That's all she wrote...
