I love Newman, one of my favourite players, but how can people want him as captain when he isn't in our top 10 players? I know Vandemberg wasn't either but he was an inspirational leader. Got 39 votes out of 40 from the playing group (keep in mind Spida was on the list at the time). Newman doesn't strike me as a real standout leader, which is what you would have to be if you're not in the top echelon of a team. Foley will be it for mine.

newman not in our top 10 are u joking he's in our top 6-7

Would love to see browny get it for next two years or so, but in the long term think it should be out of foley and lids.

If your going purely on on field leadership, I think foley is the best example of commitment, courage and playing to your ability week in week out for us by a fair way atm.

But I think lids is more talented, and might benefit from the extra responsibility and use it to get focused on taking the next step and becoming an elite player. If the captaincy helped bring out an absolute die for the jumper attitude in him to go with his undoubted talents, then he could be on his way to being one of the best 2 or 3 in the comp, and that could be the difference between hopefully just playing a prelim and winning a flag in 4-5 years.

I don't think newman, while a great player and a natural leader, is a good enough footballer to deserve the captaincy over either of them.

Who do we think the players would want though? Who is the most respected at the club? Can't get to training atm and would be keen to know what peoples thoughts are about their respective personalities, or if there is a better potential leader amongst the 18-20yo group.

Ah nice, a new topic

now now Sante, no need to be like that.

i think its a very good question and one that needs to be asked. nothing wrong at all with this thread. very original!

good one luke :thumbsu:

oh i forgot about these other 'original' threads too, they're all great :D

try this...

and this...

this ones good...

this one is better...

wow i cant believe this...

oh this originality is killing me...

this is way too much...

OMFG!!!

and if Cotchin isnt made captain next year i'll tear up my membership and park a truckload of **** at the front door of the den! :D

Players change, develop, break legs, snap ligaments, get fat, get dropped, get better, get traded, shag their captains old lady etc. With sugar's shite form in 07, if there wasn't a thread once every couple of months about who should be the next captian I would be amazed (although three in July probably a touch excessive).

Interesting to see that J Bowden and Richo have gone out of contention in most peoples opinions.

I'll put Richo back in contention, purely a one year deal with total transparency - "Johnson needs to concentrate on his footy, we're recognising a true champion of the club, the young guys are auditioning for the job in '09, etc."

I think combined with the 100 years in the comp it would give a real lift around the place.

It wouldn't be right for Browny, who's been at the club 4 years of which he's spent more than half of out injured, to leapfrog the big guy.

newman not in our top 10 are u joking he's in our top 6-7

1 M. Richardson
2 N. Foley
3 J. Bowden
4 N. Brown
5 K. Pettifer
6 B. Deledio
7 T. Simmonds
8 S. Tuck
9 K. Johnson
10 A. Raines (Newman could slide in here if he's lucky)
