So just sho is our next Captain?

on 3AW the names Whitnall, McKay and even HUlme (Robert Walls) were suggested!!!

It probably has to be Big Red doesn't it? IS a natural leader! Can't see anyone else who fitsw the bill.

I wouldnt have thought McKay would have rated a mention, great player that he is but he would be right at the end of his career
Whitnall would be a good choice, he just needs to stay out on the field more (injury free)
anyone else, hmmmmm, no other names leap out at me

Lance has done himself no favours with a fairly relaxed attitude this year so the decision is no lay down misere.

Macca, Hicky too old now though I think Kouta is still up to it and would lead by example.

Matty Lappin might surprise.
Simon Wiggins in a few years.
Simon Beaumont would give his all in the leader role as would Darren Hulme.
Jarrad Waite in 5 years.

I think we should pick a talented player that could use the captaincy to inspire him which in turns gives the team a matchwinner. To this end, my shock horror bolter could be Ryan Houlihan who I can see has bulked up and improved the one percenters in his game but is capable of brilliance. Voss, Ricciuto, Buckley, Stevens spring to mind as perfect leading styles. Ryan is far from that class right now but has the talent and brilliance to get near that class with the right attitude. He has already shown a willingness to turn over a new leaf and follow Pagan's instructions.

Always looking for a Kernahan 'from left field' candidate.

Anyway, that's my thought .... this week. Abuse not necessary (Sheiky ... you listening?).:p

Aw c'mon ODN, you can't expect me to let that one go through to the 'keeper can you ??

You call it a "shock horror bolter" ?? Bloody hell, that's an understatement of the highest proportions. A decision like that would blow up a few pacemakers I reckon. Just can't see him ever being more than senior orange boy or apprentice witches hat attendant.

Ryan Houlihan (aka 'The Blouse') will be traded come seasons end along with his usual partner in crime, Brendan 'The Mod Squad Wig' Fevola. The two of them will have a genuine worth at the trade table (I don't bloody well know why) and we will gladly be rid of them in return for a couple of tough hombres who can actually play.

A couple of comments here .... you can't say that on the strength of this season these two can't play. You would need to get something better for them and talent wise that would be no mean feat unless some other clubs are feeling generous. The fact that they now have trade value probably highlights that they have all but shaken the tags you like to give them.

The other point is that it is incredible to think that the trade value of these two was almost non-existent after 2002 and they were almost out the door. What a difference an off season makes huh? Shrewd move by the Blues in taking a punt on Pagan's influence for another season.

I've always thought that Houlihan had the ability, especially his kicking for goal, but it's whether he can be bothered getting it in the first place that concerns me. As for Fevola, well he sure has a booming kick but that seems to be about it. Maybe I'm a hard marker but I still don't think he knows what to do if the ball hits the ground. My absolute pet hate is that both of them don't chase enough, at times Houlihan appears to be just jogging behind an opposition player.

I'm pleased that Pagan has been able to extract something extra out of them in order to increase their trade value for us. I don't agree that their worth was completely non-existant in 2002, Sheedy was heard to say that they would have picked up Fevola if we had flung him. We will still give him the heave but it will cost the Bombers a little more than previously to take him.

If Whitnall can play better, he'll be the next captain. Otherwise it'll be Koutoufides, even if he has only two ar three years left in him. Will always lead by example, can inspire those around him through play. Not too sure if he's got the commuincation skills and and the inspiring voice that Bradley and Silvagni had.

However, he is the icon of Carlton. Kids adore him, women want him, men want to be him (without the knee injuries) and he is worth at least 1,000 memberships alone. The supporters love him, Kouta being captain if Whitnall doesn't step up will be alright IMO but he doesn't have the leadership that McKay and Ratten has.

Whitnall if he steps up, Kouta if he doesn't. Jarred Waite or Bret Thronton might fit into the equation if they show more. Both look like pretty good leaders IMO.
