Just wanted to see how interested people are in this game.

Per one of the NHL 12 producers, over 300 parts of the gameplay have been changed.[5] Notable new features are listed below.

* Players will have the ability to hit the goalies and vice versa.[6]

* Goalies will, for the first time with the current game engine that was introduced in NHL 07, be able to fight players and each other.[1]

* The Be a Pro mode will be more authentic. New additions include the ability to start in the CHL and play there for up to four seasons, play through 18 career levels, be drafted in the NHL Entry Draft, get tasks from the coach, simulate games to the player's next shift, and break historic records.[7][8]

* Improved physics will allow for more realistic hits with helmets coming off, players being hit into the bench, knuckleball shots, shattered glass, and improved puck movements.[9]

* Players will not as easily lose total balance if they're hit. For example, a player might use their hands or stumble to his knees to regain balance if hit.[10]

* In the Be a GM (general manager) mode, players will not be able to use retired jerseys. For this reason, certain jersey numbers may be excluded to players. The Be a GM mode will be more authentic with things like salaries designed for rookie players, and more accurate injuries.[11]

* Players will be able to play the 2011 NHL Winter Classic at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field with fans donning Winter Classic gear.[6]

* An all-new feature, the Action Tracker, will track games' every occurrence and will allow players to intervene in simulated games when needed.[6][11]

* Simulated statistics and results will be completely dependent on the players' playing style and ratings.[11]

* Improved trading logic will make it much more difficult to trade for elite players in the Be a GM mode.[11]

* For the first time ever, NHL legends will be included in the game and will be fully functional in any modes. The legends are Ray Bourque, Chris Chelios, Steve Yzerman, Patrick Roy, Jeremy Roenick, Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, Börje Salming and Wayne Gretzky.[12]

* The presentation has been revamped, as explained in interviews of players' improved appearence, improving the player's personality on the ice. A new graphical user interface (GUI) is included.[13].

Taken from Wikipedia.

The big one, for me, is the improvement to Be A Pro mode. In previous games you played a few games as a junior and then waltz onto the first line of any team. If not on the first line you still got loads of minutes. It was always very unrealistic. Now, not only do you have to earn your minutes in the NHL but you get to play up to FOUR YEARS in the CHL before drafting. That's pretty cool :)

Anyway, the demo is now available. Unfortunately you don't get to play much (1 period in a regular match and a few sparse minutes in Be A Pro mode) but it already feels a lot more fun to play than NHL 11. The new physics engine helps as hits don't feel as canned and magnetic as before.

The demo was good fun, but **** me is it FAR too short. Can't believe how much EA jibs it on their demo's.:thumbsd:

I used the simplified control scheme as I have no ****ing clue how to play NHL games, but definitely liked it more than the demo of NFL 12 (my god I had no idea wtf to do).

I think I liked NHL a lot more due to it being very similar to FIFA. Although it's a lot harder to score a goal in NHL than it is FIFA. Conversely though I found it easier to save goals in NHL than FIFA.

Enjoyed the physicality and being able to just smash anyone sprinting down the court(rink?) with the puck, basically forcing a bad pass or knocking the puck free.

I doubt I'll look at getting it as I've never been into hockey in my life. But the demo was definitely decent fun.

Yeah mate it's a rink. I'm far from a hockey expert but I have been playing the games casually since 2002 (Mario Lemiuex was on the cover so I became a Pittsburgh fan) so I know a little.

I own the full Madden 12 game but it's not great. I just don't find the sport particularly interesting and it doesn't translate well to a video game in most aspects except for throwing and running. When I'm defending I rarely feel as if I have much impact on the game.

NHL is much different. You're right, it's dynamic style makes it more like a soccer game and the scorelines are similar. The hits are superb. In the Be A Pro mode I am considering being a defender just because I love hitting blokes so much. If you do it too far off the puck you will get an interference call. I need to look up the official rule though because I don't know exactly when I can hit guys or not. In the old games 4-5 years ago the rule was a lot more lenient (and unrealistic) so I could hit guys whenever I wanted :)

And yeah, the demo is too short :( I don't see why. It's not as if being able to play a complete game would put people off buying the full game when it's released. If anything, this short demo doesn't give people enough of an insight into the game.

Play the Ultimate Team mode. There you still only get a period but at least the score is 0-0 at the start. You get to play 4 games in a tournament.

As for finding it hard to score, try looking for "one-timers" if you can't get off a clear slapshot. A one-timer is when you pass it to a teammate who then takes a just as the puck comes to him. This makes it very hard for the goalie because he has to adjust where he is looking very quickly. For getting off a clean slapshot, watch what the AI does. If you're not on a breakaway then you can normally pass the puck around at the edge of the attacking third and wait for an opening to come up.

There is one aspect where our AFL Live skills will help. Be pre-emptive. If you have two teammates skating towards a puck and one opponent, get one of your teammates to smash him :) It will work even better than in AFL because a bump doesn't involve the two players stopping, standing and then gently bumping each other. In this game, if you catch an opponent off guard then you can really take him to the ground :) Great fun.

The last hockey game I played (apart from 3-on-3 NHL Arcade which I got off the PSN...decent fun but wayyy more arcadey than anything else) was Wayne Gretzky's on N64. And that was mainly for the awesome fighting.:p

I can really only play NFL if it's in a more streamlined arcade form.

Loved the NFL Blitz games back in the day (and recently got Blitz the League 2 for $10 off PlayAsia). But overall find the more simulation NFL games too boring and too confusing.

Will give it a go. Do you use the default control system or the simplified version? I just don't think I'd get my head around the default one (plus I tend to hate the analogue stick shooting system in sports games).

I used to be addicted to NHL games, but these days Im am a Fifa addict and like melbourneman said, NHL is a similiar gaming experience to Fifa. Still I always keep a close eye on the series with reviews...might get a cheap NHL 11 to warm back into it first though

Not a huge NHL fan, never really watched many games live..... nor had i played many video games previously (Blades of Steel on NES, Mutant League Hockey on the Mega Drive, NHL 04 on ps2 etc), took a chance and picked up NHL 09 on release a few years ago. Found it to be basically FIFA on ice :p :thumbsu:. Loved every bit of it, even though as said in a post above, i was a little annoyed at the simplicity (easily able to retain the spot on the "First Line", even if you were 2nd, 3rd etc..... you still had plenty of game time). Not only with success, but it was very easy to fail and fall down..... there were plenty of times where i had a string of good games, but one bad one where i didn't do so well, i was back down to the AHL.

I eagerly awaited NHL 10, purchased on release..... while i enjoyed the subtle differences between 10 and 09.... i just wasn't as addicted to it and played it far less than i did 09. So as i did with Madden (skipping '10, after not being impressed with the jump of 08 to 09), i didn't purchase NHL '11. Reading more about '12, i will most likely make the jump back to the franchise and purchase it on release.

@HBK: I use the default scheme. It's really important. The analogue stick isn't very easy to use initially, and I'm still not great with it, but you will definitely improve with practice. I only ever play the game shooting upwards, making it easier to shoot IMO.

@Xtreme: Be A Pro mode sucked when you could be a shit rookie yet hold down a spot on the first line. These days the minutes are much more realistic.

Haven't played an NHL since 2002 - picked up the demo and was blown away.

So much has changed for mine - played NHL 94 back in the day - and haven't been so excited since hey! Be a Pro is definitely an engaging mode.

Pre-ordered this the other day. Picked up 09 and really never put it down or bothered to upgrade, looking forward to be a pro mode wasn't overly impressed by 09s' BaP mode.

NHL 99 is the shit, still my number 1 favourite game. Probably one of the best intro's to a sports game i've seen too:

I couldn't find NHL 11 this year, very little market for it in Aus. Easiest way to get a copy of NHL 12?

I downloaded the demo last night and while I was disappointed in only being able to play one period, I was happy to see the improvements.

Must be honest, the improvements are mostly cosmetic to me. Pretty graphics and menus and stuff and the gameplay is mostly the same as it has been since 08. The new goalie physics are annoying me already. You can't go anywhere near him without him falling over and getting a penalty. Hopefully the Be A Pro improvements make it a more enjoyable and replayable experience rather than a get through to the end of the first season and then never play it again.

Looking at getting this, buy what's the go with 2k making one this year? Preffer the 2k controls compared to the analogue sticks with ea

I can't remember the last time 2K made an NHL game.

@TheStinger: you won't want to quit Be A Pro mode after one year because that's when you get drafted to the NHL!

2K10 was.

They put it aside so they could spend a longer dev cycle on the game, as they felt they had got to the end of their limits with the yearly stuff and hit a creative block.

There's been nothing announced on a 2K12 game as of yet though, so don't expect it to suddenly pop up.

Probably next year you'll see it.

Ahhh ok then, can you make the controls more like FIFA ones then?

2k11 actually. Was on the Wii.

There is a setting for Classic Controls where you use X for pass and O for shoot whilst still being able to hit with the analog stick. There are different buttons for different passes and shots and switching etc.

From what I've been reading around other sites is the 2k hockey franchise is dead for the moment. Which is a damn shame.
