Given our strategy at last years draft, this is probably the one and only time that we’re hoping the opposite happens. Bring on the bid at number 1 so our pick trade is justified.
our finishing position will also have a big say on the justification of the trade, if we've traded a top 5 pick for what was 2 picks around 30? Yikes

I just can't see a reason for doing it - regardless of the finishing position. Except to make us fans a bit less angry as pick 30 and 31 made it a massive draft haul...

Cal Twomey, Mitch Cleary and Riley Beveridge talks about him on the new episode of AFL Exchange. How he was the most stand out player at the game. Talked about how he is on the same level as all those who went #1 last few years. That he is on the same level as Matt Rowell. Walsh and others. That he has a leg up against those in his draft class and those who in previous years because none of those trained with AFL clubs once a week through the whole pre-season. Or played in a VFL game before being drafted.

Cal said he got a call from a recruiter who was at the game and said to him "How many points does collingwood have?" He said he didn't know. The recruiter said "They are gonna need all 3,000 of them."

they talked about the things Nick was able to do while playing half back. He didn't play like someone who has missed 18 months of footy.

So if nothing else this year, we can look forward to a daily dose of media hype over young Nick.
Gonna be a fun year eh?
Just wait til he starts playing Nab League the whole draft becomes more prominent

Geez this kid is going to be up against it with the hype attached.
Judging by what people who know his personality say, I think he’ll probably thrive with it.

Cal does love to talk up Collingwood prospects, if nothing else.

They start talking about Nick at 34.45 for those who want to listen on the AFL site/app.

He won't have a choice by the looks of it.

Cody Weightman incidentally a massive Pies man himself growing up, was very impressed by what he saw from young Nick on the weekend.

That he does. He has been talking about Nick since 2018/2019 when he kicked the winning goal for Carey. Maybe even before that.

Jen that’s the hype. Even the recruiters don’t know what’s what til they start playing against each other. Especially the carnivals etc

It’s great he looked good in a VFL practice match. Still BenKen starred in the SANFL for the 2 seasons before he was drafted. James Aish played in 2 SANFL flags. Brooms, Shaz were both very comfortable at that level before we drafted them.

It’s not until Nick comes up against all the best kids in his year that they will really know where his position lies. These AFL journos hyping him now we should be wary of.

yes, I noticed he was playing too. Its hard not to be impressed by Nick in that game. Apparantely even our coaches are impressed at what he was able to do.

I would think playing against experienced AFL listed players would hold more weight than against those your own age. But we'll see when Nab League starts.

Surely you're not comparing Aish and ben kennedy to nick daicos...

It's gonna be a long year.

Hopefully we can keep a lid on the Nick train and just let him play Footy
The lid was off years ago for this kid. We may as well just ride the hype train now, because it’s only going to get bigger once he has NAB league exposure.

Exactly. Can't hide him now. The moment he started training and now playing VFL games, in his draft year... can't remove the hype when he performs like an afl player. Thats gonna get more revealed once nab league and all the other stuff draftees do in their draft year.

Seems the type to revel in this kind of pressure and expectation.

The kid had been playing in over his age group in footy growing up. Won a Best n Fairest when he was 14 for the U15 in the YJFC.

Confidence and swagger’: Nick Daicos wows recruiters in VFL debut

Potential No. 1 pick Nick Daicos has been likened to Greater Western Sydney star Lachie Whitfield after the Collingwood father-son prospect made an impressive debut for the Pies in a VFL practice match on Friday.
Daicos, the son of Magpies great Peter and younger brother of current Pie Josh, is set to be one of the first players taken in the national draft later this year, with a club to force Collingwood’s hand with a bid on the mid-size youngster inside the first handful of selections.
Having not played last season because of the shutdown of junior football in Victoria, teen Daicos lined up for the Pies’ reserves against Footscray, wowing rival club recruiters.

The Age spoke to several recruiters about Daicos, who agreed to share their thoughts on the condition of anonymity.

“The other day, I was super impressed. The confidence and swagger. You’ve got to remember, that would have been the first time he’s ever played a senior match. He’s only ever played school footy and juniors as far as I know. By 20 minutes in he’s taking the kick-outs, he’s baulking blokes out of half-back. Clearly he’s got the skills, but it was more that he’s got a lot more speed than his brother as well. I haven’t seen a 17-year-old kid play with that sort of swagger for a long time,” one recruiter said.

The recruiter compared Daicos to Giant Whitfield, the No. 1 draft pick in 2012 and an All-Australian in 2018.

“He’s played half-back at school and he looked pretty good there the other day. I sort of look at Lachie Whitfield. He was probably a bit similar coming through. He probably doesn’t have the elite endurance of Lachie but just his skills and run, and Lachie’s obviously looked pretty good off half-back, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts there and ends up maybe on a wing,” the recruiter said.

The recruiter added that Daicos would be close to getting a game for Collingwood’s senior side now if he was eligible, and that he would also handle the triple-fronted pressure of being an early draft pick with a famous name at a big club.

“He’d be in the mix [for Collingwood’s team now]. On that game, there was a lot of AFL guys playing and in the first half I would have had him in the top few on the ground. He fell out of it a little bit, but he’d be close,” the recruiter said.

“Knowing his personality, I think he’s the type of person that [the pressure] won’t bother him. He sort of plays like he almost enjoys that.

“There hasn’t been any player in the pool that’s been able to do that at this stage, so he’d have to be right up there. If he’s not one he’s going to be two or three [in the draft].”

Another recruiter said Daicos had “elite game IQ”.

“His ball use and vision [is] in the top echelon of any junior through the last few years,” the recruiter said.

Just a quick comment re trading the 2021 1st. The club made the right call on it unless we finish last. Holding the pick into this year immediately devalues it because clubs know you need to trade it. Do some of you honestly think a club is coming to us with genuine market value if they know it will just be absorbed by a Daicos bid?

The only chance we had of maximising it’s value was by attracting a star and those who would have preferred we hold onto it are also those who would take the view that a star wouldn’t come to a bottom 6 team. The club can’t win if you’re going to judge things like that...

The real question I have is whether the club doubles down on a rebuild post 2021 and tries to get back into the 1st round post a bid on Daicos. That will largely be dictated by the new coach clearing out dead wood.

What I am saying is Ben Ken and Aish etc starred against men in the SANFL , which if anything is a higher standard than the VFL, in the season before their draft season and in the season they were drafted.

They were very good juniors and these good kids can do that. You would expect Nick to stand out in the VFL if he is a top 10 talent. It’s not the metric that will tell us where he stands in the top 10.

Can’t agree with that Sco

If we finish bottom 4 and the pick franks it value as say pick 3 it’s far more valuable that what GWS speculated on when the were probably factoring in a pick 8-13 range.

Pick 3 might net us 2 later round 1 picks in that senario

It would be all time scenes on this board if Daicos turns around and says “lol ya kidding ya self if you think I’m coming here” to the pies prior to draft day

It was a risk either way but at the time of trading it people where generally much more buoyant about our 2021 prospects. With our list dropping away and many others improving the potential of that pick has risen.

When GWS got it in December they would have been factoring in say a pick in the 8-13 sort of range as why they were likely buying. Now it might look more like 6-11. Come the end of the season say it’s turned into pick 4 then I think you could assume you would sell it for a lot more than 2 picks in the 30’s.

Our match on the weekend would have made GWS very happy and Hine a little quaking in the boots.

You may well sell it for more than 2 picks in the 30’s, but like the time value of money a player now (2 in this case) is always better than in the future. It’s the factor that is continually overlooked in these discussions. With the type of year 2020 was two picks in the 30’s are as likely to make it as two in the teens. The discussion is much more nuanced than some are making it out to be.

FWIW I’m neither advocating for or against trading it last year. What I want to see is Collingwood being clever with our trade craft and that’s what we got on draft night which is why I’m more accepting than most. I would also add that we aren’t a bottom 4 team unless injuries cruel our top end. It’s ultimately not a value add discussion until later in the year.

Hah! You’re dreaming if you think a club would give up two later 1st rounders for a pick that we absolutely have to get rid of. A late first and maybe a mid second would be the absolute best scenario.

All depends on list spots and what sort of player would be available at pick 3. Like say last year we have pick 16 and 18 you would trade down to 3 in a heart beat if that gave you access to McDonald

But wouldn’t the 2 later round 1 picks be used as points for Daicos anyway?
