Collingwood father-son prospect and potential No. 1 draft pick Nick Daicos is expected to return to the fold in the NAB League this week after being sidelined at the weekend with calf soreness.
Daicos was a notable absentee from Oakleigh Chargers’ 22-point loss to Gippsland Power on Sunday.
However, Chargers talent manager Jy Bond said there was “nothing serious” to worry about.
“He just had a bit of calf tightness and a bit of lower leg soreness, so we just decided to rest him,” Bond said.
“He’ll be back this week, which is good.”
Daicos, who also missed Vic Metro trials with hamstring tightness earlier this year, has been a standout in the competition this season and remains second on the Herald Sun NAB League Super Rankings.
Yeah, it would gave been ideal, and I think if he wasn't injured during that nab league break, he would have. But I think otherwise, draftees have to play nab league over community footy, as it is the pathway. Can’t help, but feel we’ve missed a trick by not exposing him to VFL footy more in 2021. I doubt it effects his development, I’m not worried and I’m sure the people plotting his course have his best interests at heart. The thing is more footy against senior bodies now that he’s a professional footballer was a no brainer, IMO.
Might have been easier if he didn't get named Oakleigh captain, maybe it was his call and being captain made him feel compelled to play for both them? Can’t help, but feel we’ve missed a trick by not exposing him to VFL footy more in 2021. Maybe its a personal choice? I'm not sure.I very much doubt that. I get it for school age kids, but once you’re a full time athlete as Daicos is I’d be shocked if there were rules in place that prohibit players from playing state league footy.
Moving away from Daicos because he’s a unicorn if I had a son or daughter that was a draftable prospect, no longer at school and in the Victorian system which had those limitations in place I’d be taking them to WA or SA to further their development at state league level. Not only do they play at a higher standard, but they get to learn valuable lessons about what it takes to be a professional sportsperson. This is a clear gap in the Victorian talent pathway, IMO.
It’s possible Mkcaptain I just hope it isn’t true.
Perhaps the wisdom is that while he’s still building up his body, the wear and tear and injury risk playing against grown men outweighs the developmental advantages? Can’t help, but feel we’ve missed a trick by not exposing him to VFL footy more in 2021. That's true. It's an interesting one. What you say makes sense, but most seem to think TAC maximises a kid's chance of being drafted. Hence overage kids requesting and being granted permission to play an additional year of TAC.

He’d likely be playing senior AFL footy this year if he was 3 days older, so I’m not sure that reasoning stacks up.Perhaps the wisdom is that while he’s still building up his body, the wear and tear and injury risk playing against grown men outweighs the developmental advantages?
Any other reason than that and I’m with you, it’s a missed opportunity to fast track him.
Agree it’s pretty specious, but the only semi-sensical reason I could see for not developing him in the twos. He’d likely be playing senior AFL footy this year if he was 3 days older, so I’m not sure that reasoning stacks up.

I’d say it’s been Nicks choice.Agree it’s pretty specious, but the only semi-sensical reason I could see for not developing him in the twos.
What’s your take on why we haven’t done so?
Yep could be as simple as that. If so it’s a shame we haven’t pushed harder for time in the twos. If we (the club) really wanted to make it happen we could IMO.I’d say it’s been Nicks choice.
