Nick Gill - We have something to work with here

Footballers are notorious for telling the absolute truth, of course. The knee's fine. I should be fit to play ths Saturday. The shoulder's never felt better. The punch never landed. I wasn't nervous with those kicks.

Forget what Gill said. Did you see the look on the bloke's face when he went back to line up for that first goal? He was looking for the brown shorts.

As for the technique issue - ever stood over a crucial putt and barely been able to pull the hands back? Ever lined up for a key free throw and clanged it off the front rim? That's the whole point about nerves - they frequently manifest themselves in technique problems.

I'm not saying that Gill is smooth as Tony Lockett in his technique, but I expect if he plays a few games his conversion rate will improve. It'll probably be because he drops the ball a bit better - but then if he's not as nervous, I would expect him to.

agree. :thumbsu:

Its not unusual to get the wobbles in your first game, especially if kicking isn't your strength. I remember Hentschel looking very shaky from 20 metres in his first 1 or 2 games.

What they should have done is play him earlier in the season when it wasn't so cutthroat and he'd be fine right now. At least he showed some run and marking power, which is more than most of our forward line this year.

Gill, Burton and Roo

These are the X factors for the showdown.

Lets just hope they are all firing (and playing?)
Forget Roo as he is looking more like an X-player. :(

That would be sensational, a good way to fire up for the Showdown.

I am pretty keen to hear about jenny's husband's intelligence a bit more, sounds like australian of the year to me.

the conversation was not about someone's husband, but on the validity of presenting the views of someone, anyone, not on the forums to discuss them themselves.
You can put whatever slant on it you want ... but the bottom line is it in the trash can, so we can get back to the topic at hand.

you're getting very twisted there Kane, when a simple fact is a 'slant'.

any more cynical and you'll move into politics. or talkback radio :D
Nah, the stuff I deleted was more up to the "standard" of talkback radio. ;)

Hope he plays on Thurstans. I saw him destroy the guy (and about 3 other opponents) in a North/Sturt match last year at Adelaide Oval, although I think Toby's mind was being altered back then.

Kicked 6 goals in about 15 minutes in the 2nd quarter on Thurstans and finished with 9 for the game. Barrie Robran described his 2nd quarter as one of the best individual performances in a quarter he had ever seen.

There's an article in today's Jimmy Page regarding Nick and his kicking: http://realfooty.com.au/news/news/fixing-elite-players/2007/08/01/1185647978451.html

That article is a good read for any doubters over Gibbs.

"Some, such as Anton Grbac, AFL Victoria's state director of coaching and a kicking consultant to Port Adelaide, believes it is the game itself that has changed and that, while players have improved, they have not kept pace with the exacting standards of the modern game. Many of those recognised for their inefficient kicking now are not comparatively poor kicks viewed against players of previous eras. This new contested game is only able to be played by those of elite skill, so the examination of that skill is not as searching at the younger ages. Throughout the junior game players have usually been so superior to their peers that deficiencies were rarely exploited."
