One of the great AFL stories in recent times.

Unwanted by other clubs, worked his butt off from the rookie list to become a premiership captain.

Fearless in the contest and bleeds black and white.

Under-rated by those outside the club, but would walk into any other side in the comp.

Had the pleasure of meeting him last year and had a good chat 1-on-1 with him for about 10 minutes. Genuine nice guy.

Congratulations Maxy, hope to see you doing this again in October.

Has always been an inspirational player and leader in his time at Collingwood and so glad that we have him. Knows his strengths and limitations and plays to them well, and really holds the backline together.

Well done to our premiership captain.

He deserves all the praise he gets, because without him we would not have survived that drawn Grand Final, and subsequently won the next week.

His last quarter efforts were outstanding and to me firmly placed him as the greatest leader in the AFL at the moment.

Basically rejected by one and all through his younger footballing days, told he had no future - reminds me of another Collingwood premiership captain who - "Couldn't kick over a jam tin", "Couldn't catch a cold in the Arctic" and couldn't run.

Nothing beats, determination, application and sheer character.

What he lacks in talent is easily covered by his courage and outstanding leadership skills. Exactly the type of Captain our boys needed in the last few years.

Yeah and for the resident posters who like having a crack at the current premiership captain, stop bagging Maxy out, he reads everything!!

"Supporters probably don’t really (know) the influence they can and do have. One person writing a negative letter or yelling out a negative comment to “one of their own” can stick with players. What supporters need to understand is that if we play badly and/or lose, we know. It’s no secret to us. And no matter how many others remind us of that fact, no supporter can hold a player to a higher standard than we hold ourselves. We are devastated by bad performances and by a loss. When we hear negative comments it only pours fuel on the fire, and we cannot do anything about it until the next week.

Any positive feedback, whether supporters believe it or not, is actually a big help. The quicker we as players get over disappointments, the quicker we can turn things around for the next week, not dwelling on it. So I guess as supporters, just realise that we don’t mean to make mistakes. We don’t mean to miss goals. But we do. And we will forevermore. But all your positive support is huge to help us stay confident and get over it to make amends the next week."
