I am interested in finding out some of the more unusual nicknames of football clubs around Australia. Some of my favorites are:
Redbacks (Hampton Park)
Doves (Doveton)
Grasshoppers (Navarre, Dromana)
Pidgeons (Yarrawonga)
Stonecats (Frankston YCW)

Any other suggestions?

Viva le Roys!

I came across a team once, called the Purples. can't remember who, now ...

Navarre were sometimes called the frogs, instead of the grasshoppers, though probably derogatorily by other clubs.

What about Horsham United Diggers?

Watchem-Corack Panthers (since merged with Birchip, became Birchip-Watchem Swans)
Wedderburn Redbacks.
Minyip-Murtoa Kookaburras.
Stawell Swifts.
Stawell Warriors.

Ararat used to have a shiezenhausen of teams with wierd names, such as :

Methodists, who later changed their name to Miners.
Caledonians (might have been named after a mine).
Trinity (named after a school I think).
Prestige (also possibly named after a school).

I think these nicknames also served as their actual club names.

Maldon Donners.
Hepburn Kookaburras.

A League football Club in Adelaide

known as Woodville: Malcolm Blight played for them and Coached there as well, just prior to going to Geelong.

The club was known as the 'Woodpeckers'or more affectionately ' The Peckers '

they were eventually renamed the 'Warriors '
the club merged with West Torrens on the eve of Adelaides inclusion to the AFL

PA1870

Ashburton wear red & green & are known as the Toffee Apples.

------------------
Fat Pizzas. They're Big & they're Cheesy.

In SA:

Flinders Uni - The Crabs
Athelstone - The Raggies

And Grave Danger - I guess Magpies is wholly appropriate for Port - after all the Magpie is a scrounger and a pest, common vermin. Fits Port down to a tee.

Uncle Steve

how could I forget the Raggies...I am even a member (must ask Bluey for a board !!!)

Apartantly named as when they first played they wore all kinds of jumpers (rags) because they had no official uniform.

GO THE RAGGIES

Grouse nickname!

By the way, the ... err ... Stationmasters, as you call them, are gonna get their EVERLOVIN' HIDES WHIPPED OFF THEIR SWEET PEPPERED AND MARINATED BACKS when they host the Reds early this year.

The "Peckers" was a pretty lame nickname for a footy club, probably the reason they were held back for so long.

Ironically it was one M. Blight who changed the nickname when he returned from Victoria. Damn near took them to the premiership in '86. Damn it was heartbreaking.

They kept missing easy shots in the Prelim against Glenelg, had the won that, they would have gone on easily as North were a joke in the Grand Final.

Did you know Port were known as that nick for a short while in their early history? When they were about to join the AFL I suggested they revisted history with their choice of a nick, except leave out the L & E.
