Night session needs to start earlier

Marcos does have a point, all of Jelena's matches so far have gone three sets...don't get me wrong I hope she wins tonight but Baghdatis and Djokovic probably won't get on court before 10pm again today! It's not just for the players, if a men's match this late went for five sets half the crowd won't even see it! Hewitt/Baghdatis last year deserved a better timeslot...

Starting the night session at 6:30pm or even 7pm on weekends would make a lot of sense as there's no Today Tonight or Home & Away.

630 even on weekdays as i think we could all forgo today tonight and home and away for two weeks as much as they are quality TV productions -) !!!

He'll be really pissed if it went 5 and he lost. Could be a 3:30am finish.

I'm not sure what the solution is. But a start would be to start the day session at 10am and the night session at 7pm. Perhaps one of the night matches (women's or men's) on paper has to be a gimme, hoping that either match is straight sets. Of course, there are no guarantees.

An even better solution is to take the tennis off channel 7. Either put it on 7HD or Foxtel, so that there is no conflict of interest with ch 7 wanting to show the news, Today Tonight and Home & Away. Then perhaps the night session can be scheduled to start at 6pm, or whenever the day session ends after 6pm.

Something needs to be done. First of all the matches go too late and the players miss out on sleep and secondly the stadium is always half empty by the time the matches eventually finish. Credit to the crowd tonight as even by the end it looked 3/4 full.

Back in 1996 I know they started the day session at 10:00 but then the morning games would be played in almost empty stadiums just like it is at the French Open. You don't want that do you? They schedule 3 matches a day on RLA and play often finishes by 4pm in the first week, and yet they start the night session at 7:30 and by the time they actually play the first point of the match it's 7:40. On the rare occasion that the day sesssion goes long (Federer/Tipsarevic) then it's just bad luck and not much can be done. But considering that so rarely eventuates they should schedule the night session to start at 6:30, 7:00 at the very latest. How hard would it be to have the news at 6:00 followed by the night session of tennis? I have no problem staying up weather being there in person or watching it on TV, but it's unfair to the players. Djokovic won tonight but his preparation isn't ideal now.

Whatever Channel 7 have to say about it, it is not healthy for the sport to have all these fantastic matches sarting at midnight, and finishing at 3 am. Both sessions need to start earlier, and if that is deemed impossible, cut the night session to one match.

Tennis Australia is hoping that kids will choose tennis over AFL, cricket, soccer etc. All the successful advertising in the world cannot match a kid watching a great sporting event on TV and deciding to emulate their hero. I sat up and watched Hewitt v Baghdatis last year. It was a fantastic match, but also a lost opportunity for Tennis Australia to showcase their sport to children across the country.

Just on starting earlier, sometimes the day session has run late, the venue needs time to move people and change over

I enjoy watching Dokics matches on at 7:30, couldnt give a stuff about any of the mens matches anymore, last years Hewitt match was awesome to watch though, the late night matches were great when they featured Aussies

Just on the disadvantage of playing at night, I dont know, whats worse, finishing at 2am or playing in the heat of the afternoon on a 40 degree day?

The one match thing IMO is spot on, espcially once they move into round 3 where seeds can meet seeds. It really is tough for the players, though admittedly Baghdatis and Hewitt both had their next games played at a fairly similar timeslot to the round before (Hewitt 12pm then 7:30pm start and Baghdatis 12pm then 10:30ish) Novak hadnt had a night game in 2009 or 2008 IIRC, which is SO HARSH on him having to accustom to...

Something must be done either way...

i think this complaint comes from the fact that the tennis has been a lot more arduous in this tournament. it just seems the speed of the courts have contributed to longer matches in general.

that stosur/zakapalova match was a painful affair to watch, it was a straight sets victory but it went nearly 2 and a half hours because of long meaningless rallies, and the rallies were finished with one player hitting it into the net or hitting it long, so it wasnt like it was a good clean fun match for those watching and those concerned
You really are a spanner.

The courts are actually faster which leads to much more attacking tennis, contrary to your point. The past 2 years I've actually watched the tennis for this reason, as opposed to the previous 3-4 years where I didn't bother.

Oh... and yeah... **** Homo & Gay off, and start it earlier.

did the tennis players start a union. i know roddick wanted to a few years ago but i cant remember what happened in the end. if not they need one to sort of these problems. they have rules saying matches wont be started after 11pm but that still happens. if the players came out and send FU tv stations we refuse to play matches after this time what can they do about. if the players just staged a lockout the organisers would need to listen to the players demands.

The no starting the next match after 11pm is nothing but a myth.

Play cannot start before 7.30pm due to the obvious. If it was to start earlier day session would have to finish by no later than 5.30pm each and everyday.

1. need to clear the arena of day session patrons

2. need to do a quick clean of the arena which takes all door staff and others 40-45 minutes.

3. need to redeploy staff back to their positions after they clean themselves up.

4. the need to allow the players playing 2nd match to have a practice on centre court.

5. need to open the doors to the arena 30 minutes before play is to start for the night session to allow patrons time to find their seats, get settled etc.

One issue I will defend Djokovic on is his late night in the 4th Round. He didn't get to bed until about 5am/5:30am yesterday. And then he's expected to play at 3pm today? That is just unacceptable.

These players are playing for 2 million dollars and should be able to stand as one and say that scheduling is a joke.

Oh wow! Roddick has said it. He has questioned if things are supposedly equal between the men and women, that night matches should alternate between the women first and men first. Apparently the WTA are dead set against women not being first up at night

Paul McNamee has said they should go back to a 7pm start.

Isn't the fact they they play for that amount of money and still get a day's rest is enough. That's part of tennis in my view, you have to deal with schdueling and soemtimes it doesn't work in your favour.

I would have the night matches starting at 7pm though, instead of 7.45pm like they do.

I think a 7pm start is the first thing that needs to happen. By the time the warm up happens and players are ready to go it would be a 7.15 start anyway. I also think they should rotate the mens and ladies or play a doubles as the second game.

They should use Hisense arena in night sessions more frequently, i thought they actually used it at night back when it was Vodafone. But it was probably a match that started at 3-5 and was still going at 9pm - onwards.

They could alternate like one night women start on RLA and men start on Hisense.... the second match would be men for RLA and women for Hisense. Then do the opposite the next night, otherwise i'd start early OR make one venue a priority for men's night matches and the other a priority for womens matches. If a night session concludes early, and the last match is yet to be played at RLA........ get them to Hisense ASAP and start.

I felt sorry for the doubles after the Rafa match last night, not many stuck around (bar the chair umpire, lines people and ball kids). I would have doubles as the preview to the main event (meaning a 5:30 / 6pm start, providing the last day session match isn't going at that time).

Yeah, some top ranked women play doubles.
The Williams sisters, Kuznetsova, etc.

No they shouldn't, the tickets didn't seel that well and your better off having the arena for two mens's and two women's matches and give it allowance afterwards for any weather disruptions so matches can be moved. It also made seven's coverage frustating as we got the hisense matches delayed or not shown at all.

A lot of real tennis fans enjoy watching the men's simply because the quality compared to that of the women's is well, light years apart. (hopefully u get my point, and im not saying that you're not a real tennis fan, and by real i mean people who actually understand the game)

I do understand most of it revolves around ratings though.

As for the disadvantage, it really does depend on when you're next match is. Ideally, the best situation would revolve around both players playing around the same time of the day, or one right after the other, so that they have roughly the same time to recover and prepare. Whether this means playing in 40 degree heat or finishing at 2am wouldn't make a difference. Since one of the amtches usually finishes in the day though, and the other one is played at night, allowing the men's to play earlier would at least let the men poissibly finish around 1030-1100pm, enabling them to have some form of decent sleep, as opposed to finishing at 2am and then being in bed around 3am to only have ****all sleep.

How about this? Alternate each night with

Two women's matches
OR
One men's match and then a doubles match

^Or how about there being an AO for men and an AO for women, running right after each other?

Oh that's right the women's would be pulled from tv due to lack of ratings...

A union would be a step in the right direction.

Djokovic is always one to look for an excuse

^Djokovic was in the right in my opinion.

Roddick had played a day time match, and Djokovic finished in the very early hours of the morning.

To make things fair, Roddick-Djokovic should've been at night time.

Instead they allow Federer the night-match, when Federer played also during the day, as well as del potro having played during the day.

Why?

Ratings is the only reason I can think of.

How that is fair to sportsmen though has me baffled. If anyone disagrees with this, surely they must be biased against Djokovic because they don't like him.
