Nirvana, most overrated band in the history of the world except maybe Radiohead. But Radiohead actually make some amazing music at times, Nirvana (for me) never did. Good average pop-rock, nothing more.

I can't explain how underwhelmed I was when I first heard 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. I was like 'Is this the song everyone is raving about?'.

'Alive', on the other hand...

it's well established that you don't know sh*t anyway jm, no need to post anymore.

fwiw, I think Nirvana benefit from Cobain's death in that it immortalises him a bit - plus it didn't give nirvana a real chance to fall off like Pearl Jam did.

As has been echoed repeatedly, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden > both Pearl jam and nirvana.

Hell I'd have Helment and Mudhoney ahead of them both as well.

Ledbetter.

Can only assume there's some reference to Huddy Ledbetter (the dude who wrote Black Betty)

Anyone know?

Eddie named the song after his friend Tim Ledbetter and the song was basically improved by Eddie the day it was originally recorded.

Someone's a bitter little girl. :D

I love both bands, but I always thought Pearl Jam were better.

And for the poster who was looking for some class songs by Pearl Jam.

Alive
Even Flow
Jeremy
Black
State of Love and Trust
Animal
Go
Dissident
RearviewMirror
Daughter
Better Man
Spin The Black Circle
Do The Evolution
Hail, Hail
Corduroy
Life Wasted

And the list goes on......

Pearl Jam, love Nirvana as well but Pearl Jam is better. Kurt Cobain even knew it himself hence his criticising of them for being comericial "sell outs" even though he was himself because he made money from his music as well, but he accepted it eventually.

Accepted it??

Thats a mighty strange way of accepting something.

"I would rather be hated for what I am than loved for what im not" - Kurt Cobain.

Pearl Jam. I've no bad feelings towards Nirvana but if Kurt hadn't have died so spectacularly this poll would be reversed.

*BAM*

Dead Kurt. Yeah I think 'accepted it' was probably the wrong phrasing earlier by whoever said it.

AIC and Soundgarden are brilliant bands too.

I wonder how a poll about the best Grunge band would go? All four are worthy of being known as the best.

Pearl Jam by eons.

although its hard to compare 2 bands - one of which disbanded 12 yrs ago.
so you should really only compare:

bleach, nevermind, (incest) and in utero to ten, vs and vitalogy.

who knows what nirvana might have come up with after that.
mind you im sure it would not have been of the ilk of no code or yield ;)

Wow, I never knew Pearl Jam was so overrated. I mean, I enjoy their music, but jeez...

so what makes nirvana so far better and pearl jam so overated.
heres why i reckon pj are greater.

ed's voice is richer, stronger and has a better range.
mike's guitar work is not even comparable to kurts power chords.
PJ songs are far better lyrically

the only thing i feel nirvana has over PJ is their 60min of mtv unplugged vs PJs unplugged. only because nirvana dared to be different and turned some average songs (as performed by the meat puppets) into gems.... although black, state, oceans and ritfw on pjs unplugged are also amazing.

I had basically the same reaction in reverse. I got heavily into Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, but Pearl Jam just left me scratching my head, wondering what all the fuss was about.

The band I could never "get" was Mudhoney. Did absolutely nothing for me.

PJ I can listen to pretty much everything they've ever done. Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots: I generally either liked the whole album or hated the whole album. Nirvana and Alice in Chains: I prefer to cherry-pick the best songs out of each album because they tended to mix good and bad.

Pearl Jam for me. It's interesting to hear comments about Riot Act. It seems to be a record that really polarises the audience. Personally, I really liked it. The first seven songs are great IMO and All or None is great too. The others seemed a bit flat and didn't quite work.

Pearl Jam by a long long way
There was a reason that while they were both around pearl jams albums outsold nirvana and they did bigger more sucessful tours, because pearl are much better.
Scott Stapp of Creed (yes you dont have to like them, just making a point), thought that his band wanted him to kill himself so they would sell more albums, like nirvana.
