AFL rule interpretation changes explained here http://www.afl.com.au/video/2015-02-18/how-the-game-will-be-umpired-in-2015

First thing I thought of for the first was NN. The number of times I have seen a player make a bee line for NN before a marking contest to block him out. If we have a fit NN, and it is harder for defenders to block him from the contest, then 2015 might be the year he takes it to another level.

Heres hoping anyway.

That rule is going to frustrate a lot of defenders. It could very well be a kick in the nuts to Gov floating in for a grap when Mackenzie is one out with a forward. Or any other 2v1 scenario. Whatever defender is doing the 'blocking' just needs to be more careful about it and less obvious.

A jittery backman like Brown is going to struggle with this i'd say. Good thing he's too busy locking down smalls ;)

The new holding the ball rule should be interesting for Fyfe. He loves dropping the ball after failing to break a tackle. My guess is he gets done for holding the ball 5 times in a quarter and then punches someone. Freo fans will then say his actions were justified and shouldn't cost him a brownlow.

2. Holding the ball/prior opportunity
  • If the player with the ball is balanced and steady (within a reasonable time frame)
  • If a player tries to take a player on (fend off or evade)
  • If a player has had an opportunity to dispose of the ball but chooses not to

If only they could change the rule so that it's ok to kick someone in the nuts, then he'd have a brownlow for sure. They could even use his excuse to re-word the rule "pushing the player off with his foot, in the groin"

Personally the only rule change that I thought needed to be made was the fact that you shoudlnt be allowed to walk over the centre line in ball ups to block ruckmans jump at the ball.

Unfortunately with the erratic way the umps bounce the ball that isn't practical.

This jittery nature of brown did come out on Friday as he was locking down a small. We had the 2 on 1 and he was still panicked and gave away the free even though schofield was there to come over and either mark or destroy the ball.

Every team will have the same though, it depends who is best at disguising. Glass used to get away with a lot and e-mac appears to have learnt quite well.

Sure it is.. You are allowed to cross the line, just not to block.

The rule is in force now, just poorly adjudicated, albeit they improved last year
