without a doubt the most important part of a football club is its recruiting dept. you sink or swim depending on who you draft.and how well you get your picks right.
to my way of thinking every single member should be demanding we spend more money on this department. we spend less money on recruiting than any other club in the afl and over a long period of time it shows.' last yr we spent 140k or there abouts the next club stk spent close to 220k.or there abouts.the top clubs are spending double this.
this is one area of administration that we should never scrimp on regardless of our financial position yet we have for yrs. if we want to become a regular finals contender this is one area we have to fix.fix this area and finals will look after themselves in time.

i agree with u that recruiting is important but richmond has a big debt hanging over its head and the current board is doing a great job at paying off that debt. we just dont have enough funds to spend that much money on recruiting. collingwood r exploring ireland and south africa for young talent but richmond just doesnt have the money yet. the answer to this is everyone become a member - this is the best way for ur club to receive money and pay off the debt and secondly ACTUALLY ATTEND THE GAMES. richmond budget for a certain number of people each game and if we dont get that crowd we lose money so that means even less to spend on recruiting

theres what 4 or 5 melb clubs who are in financial difficulty yet these clubs manage to spend double of what we do. they realise you just cant afford to scrimp in this area. the club just has to find the money even if it means cutting back in other areas.anyway all i hear from miller and co is how well we are going financially.

Those figures are from last year. The club announced an increase of $1m in footy department spending for this year. Rawlings and McRae were added. Recruiting has been beefed up. Also those figures exclude Miller who plays a role. So we would have been closer to that St Kilda number.

Unfortunately we can't spend money we don't have. We would still be in the lower half but the gap has closed a little.

since 1986 the biggest single reason we have been so miserable is recruiting. if we want to get the club on the right track it is imperative that this area is fixed asap.if we are now on a par with stkilda we are the equal bottom spending club in this area.whats the point of having state of the art facilities or the best coaches if you cant get the right cattle to work with. as for miller with all of his other jobs at the club how much time does he have to put into this important area. besides his record is poor he should be replaced by someone with the time and an ability to do better.
finally we manage to find money we dont have for other things lets get our priorities right and fix the most important area of a footy club. remember recruit well play well.

our foward line should consist of Pavlich, Wells, Franklin.

choosing the wrong player is not a money issue.

however we did miss out on Craig Bolton because we couldnt afford a player from the pre-season draft. he would have been handy for out backline also.

it certainly is if the club has only 1 bloke doing the job and we cant afford to send him to look at your wells and franklins and pavlichs. as far as i know we dont have anyone on the payroll in perth or adelaide and 1 would not be enough. to see the amount of good players being overlooked in perth just look at wce freos rookie listed players.

im sure the pavlich's and franklins were looked at. having more money in the recruiters pocket doesnt make him smarter.

I'd say a bigger problem was player development, club culture, refusal to move players on. Lack of leadership. Periods of no planning and periods of the plan changing monthly. Too much focus on short-term results and no commitment to building.

We have almost had a Tigers-For-Life policy where the idea of trading someone was icky. Well we have moved on Ottens, Fiora and Rodan. We have decided when Kellaway and Gaspar should go - not left that to the players.

We are handing out suspensions and fines left right and centre to try to address our culture problems.

if we are now on a par with stkilda we are the equal bottom spending club in this area.

We were on a par with St Kilda last year. We have added $1m to the football department since.

What's the point of buying a Masserati and filling the tank with sand?

We HAVE recruited some very good footballers and they have stalled at Richmond. Ottens was an All-Australian remember. Can't fault that draft pick.

as for miller with all of his other jobs at the club how much time does he have to put into this important area. besides his record is poor he should be replaced by someone with the time and an ability to do better.

But that is what has happened. Miller sacked Beck and did the job himself because we were losing money and lumbered with debt. Then he hired Francis Jackson. Now they are talking about spending more money in the area. Miller is being eased out of the area as budget allows.

We have to improve the whole lot. No point recruiting well and then developing the players poorly.

Does mean that you have more recruiter's opinions to consider. Does mean that you have more blokes with more contacts who can ask around about a bloke's attitude and know more about a guy instead of guessing. Does mean you see a guy play more often and have a better understanding of the guy.

More money can be the difference between 1 recruiter seeing a player in the flesh 4 times. And 5 recruiters seeing a player in the flesh 5 times. 4 reports from one guy or 25 reports from 5 different sources can make a big difference. Particular if one of those sources has an 'in' with a junior coach, school coach etc.

Unfortunately, therein lies the problem... we need coaches who CAN make good footballers GREAT footballers ... we have too many good footballers stall for whatever reason and this needs addressing as part of the review taking place now.

All the good ones seem to be plagued with injury, and without the depth the side gets into problems. The gap between players is too great.

If this is all true it's gonna take at least 10 years to fix the problems at the club associated with culture, financial performance and list management.

Can't amateur footy watchers (like myself or you) be used, at least to give tips which can be followed up. It doesn't take a genius to spot a player who may be able to take it to the next level.

On the variety of RFC sites I visit all of these players were named as prospects prior to being picked up:

Richard Tambling
Alwyn Davey
Matthew Campbell
Eddie Betts
Nathan Krakouer
Joe Campbell

Some of them look to be pretty fair prospects......

Yes, I agree. Knowledge is power. However its still a balance that needs to be found. 5 talented recruiters could do a better job than 10 duds, or 10 guys with different opinions.
