Sorry, I can't agree with that one, Libraries are a loan service similar to a DVD rental store. They don't make an exact copy of a licensed product and give it away to everyone, they loan you their copy (licence).

He's reaching a bit though - I get what he's saying but it isn't 100% correct. After spending a lot of time on the comment section of TF I've come to the conclusion the majority of the regulars would pirate movies/tv even if they only cost 10c a go. Rick is one of these people - I think the pirate movement was great but in reality it is just filled with people who want everything for free.
Well - What happens when you Buy a DVD and then share it with Mates? What the Difference there?
Well most Torrents from DVD’s just have the Movie and don’t have the Extra Content that is put on the DVD.
What happens if People Borrow/Rent the DVD and make a Copy for themselves from that? You would think quite a few people would do that
You've purchased the licence, it's a single copy, if you loan them the DVD, they watch it, then give it back it's not a problem. It's the unmodified copy that you've purchased
Under law that's illegal, plenty of people do it, hell I'VE done it, but at the end of the day it's illegal because you've duplicated licensed media.
So as long as you the person does not make a copy of the DVD, Then you should be okay
It is Illegal but you are right I say Majority of Younger People who Borrow the DVD’s would of made Copies of that DVD as you don’t want to Borrow the same DVD Over and Over and Over again
I say even Parents who have burned Kids DVD’s for there Kids
..... and this is why this guys analogy completely misses the mark. If you borrowed a book and photocopied/scanned the entire thing it would be just as illegal, but the act of borrowing something and returning it has absolutely nothing in common with internet piracy.
I agree he is not spot on but I don’t think he is even talking about the Law.
I see him saying that people Sharing there Stuff Thru Internet File Sharing is same way of Sharing as a Library and Rental Shops have.
Just don’t bring the Law into his Article as you said when you bring the Law in that is where the Difference is but I don’t think he using the Law in his Article
But it's not........ one is borrowing a licence and returning it, one is duplicating media without a licence and distributing it, they are both very different things.
No. Fundamental idea is completely different. In every way.
Every. Single. Way.
Dav has tried explaining it several times and I'm not sure whether I can do it any better. How?
It’s still Sharing Information and That is the Fundamental Idea. Nothing about $$$$
The difference is that with file sharing there is a duplicate being made. Despite the name "filesharing" it is copying, not sharing. Both people can use the item at the same time. That is very different from sharing a physical item, whether that be a book or a lawnmower.Well - There is not taking the Media from anyone so no one can have it. Anyone can still get it.
Law does make a Difference BUT we the Article does not use the law. It’s the Fundamental Idea of Sharing is being used here
