Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

I think that sort of strategy would only possibly work if you badly are in need of working capital, i.e., your budget is stretched and you need extra cash to bring in profitable players and get rid of doldruming players.

Otherwise you're losing out in terms of the two-three games' benefit - as a point value it's not worth two trades IMO.

yeah exactly
i think this sort of strategy is for those who have a shocking budget with lots of trades saved up, again the strategy would differ from team to team and situation to situation

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

guys a name i havent seen get thrown up at all recently is nigel lappin. i dont need to post any stats about him as im sure we are all aware of what he has done the last few years in dreamteam. is at 378k at the moment and still has scores of 72 and 75 to filter through when he returns, could quite easily dip down to under 350, and if he does what he did on the back end of last year, is a must have. but the obvious question is will he? i dont know much about his injury other then he has to still have a test to determine whether he will play or not, and again from last year, with matthews on lappin, one week doesnt necessarily mean one week. does anyone think he is any chance to return to his best? or has the game finally caught up on him and he will succumb to injury or lose his touch in what could quite possibly be his final year?

im going to keep an eye on him and like BJ wait for a few decent scores before i get the old fellas back into my team

3 poor scores against Collingwood, Sydney and Port Adelaide (may have been injured in the last one). He is at a very good price, and one to look at when he comes back for sure. I have fond memories of his excellent 2nd half to season last year.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Lappin is one of many names on the midfield radar over the next few weeks and it really depends who is available when you are looking to upgrade. I'll be making a move on Swan in the next 2 weeks because that fits with my available cash and timing. Others will make different choices because of different budgets and timing for players they want. Lappin is an option but by no means a standout. Priced correctly he would make a solid mid-range premium if the timing is right.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

An area we have spent very little time on because of the limited issues and trades occuring there is the rucks. Some doubts over Cox and Simmonds nearing his true price may have some activity here over coming weeks.

Interested in the panels thoughts on Laurie Sandilands and his credentials to step up into the mix of 2nd / 3rd best DT ruckman this season.

Yes, at the start of the season I had also disregarded him but before all the memories of last years disaster come flooding back remember that he did have O.P. last season which restricted both his TOG on the ball and his movement. I've watched him closely the last 2 weeks and have been highly impressed by his improved mobility and ability to ruck the majority of the game without a break. So, the numbers are as follows:-

Scores of 82, 93, 73, 49, 94, 128.

Average 87

Price 324K

B/E 21

Given his improved TOG, confidence level and clearance numbers I would consider an average of 85-90 is not unrealistic which would have him battling White as the 2nd best ruckman available. The reason I mention this now is the price differential between Sandilands and White of 70K will close substantially over the coming weeks. I would have to say that Sandilands game on the weekend is one of the best I have ever seen a ruckman play and he is a player who relies heavily on confidence which should now be at an all time high. I have not included last years numbers due to the injury issues.

Some suggestions from posters on the main board on topic they would like to see covered have been made here:

I suggest you all have a read and we should try to answer some of those questions. A bit of research required perhaps, but some good questions in there and it would do us well to put together something.

Any of the "Guns" that have gone off the boil will need to show some definitive signs they are back on track, before I pick them up. Happy to pay a few extra $$ to ensure I'm not drafting them while they're still on the way down (My league opponents over the past 2 weeks have both drafted Jonathan Brown the week I played them.... he's still sliding and hasn't shown any real signs of getting back to the numbers we had expected. both opponents would have been better using their emergency or the player they got rid of.... I love that when it happens.... to someone else!! ;))

That said, Lappin was different last year because of his absolute bargain price. I had (and loved) him last year, but he's not on my shopping list for elite midfield guns this year.

Swan, on the other hand, is thereabouts.

Good point Dogs. If you need to make cash (and 2 trades) for the upgrade, it depends on which Guns are bottoming out at the same time that you have a suitable downgrade for your peaking Cashcow. I'm sitting on Hill at the moment because there's not a standout downgrade target in the forwards at the moment.

For this reason, I don't mind making a downgrade earlier and sitting on the cash for a few weeks. It gives you far greater flexibility for your upgrades.

On the topic of potential cash cows, David Myers (Centre/Back), Darcy Daniher (Fwd) & promoted rookie Jarrod Atkinson (Back) will all debut for Essendon this Sunday.

Really?
Three very exciting players for our club.
I like the look of them all.

Questions from Baxters on main board.

How about something on selection/trading strategy by position... ie Mids: do you trade in consistent performers (Carrazzo, Simpson) who hover around 90-100 but rarely crack it, or would you rather stack it with players who can get huge numbers (130+) on their day, but sit in the 70's during a low one (Stanton, Mitchell)?

Forwards: Consistency (Pav, Chapman, O'Keefe) or dynamic forwards capable of kicking bags (Franklin, JB, Lucas, Bradshaw)?

Backs: Consistency (Bowden, Milburn) or run-off players who can get cheap ball (Fletcher, Gilbee) but don't do it consistently?

Probably not much debate wrt rucks - get the big names and sit on them; the pool just isn't deep enough to muck around with anything else.

Guess I see value in this discussion being around how best to strike a balance between a team that scores between 1800-1900 each week vs a team that plays on form and can range from 1600-2200.

Also like to see a discussion around tags. Who draws them in each team (#1, #2 tag, etc), and how do they perform when tagged?

First of all tags. I'll start the ball rolling by providing a list of players I would consider most likely to be tagged at each club. The % is what I would consider the likelihood of them being tagged.

Adelaide - Thompson 70%
Brisbane - Black 90%
Carlton - Judd 100%
Collingwood - Swan 90%
Essendon - Stanton 80%
Fremantle - Headland 50%
Geelong - Ablett 100%
Hawthorn - Hodge 80%
Melbourne - McLean 70%
North Melbourne - Harvey 90%
Port Adelaide - SBurgoyne 80%
Richmond - Foley 80%
St Kilda - DalSanto 90%
Sydney - Goodes 90%
West Coast - Kerr 100%
Western Bulldogs - Cooney 80%

Obviously very subjective and there are others at each club who could be tagged when opposition play 2 taggers. These players would include Bartell, Mitchell, Chad, Bell, Stevens etc. On some occasions they may receive the number 1 tag but generally not. The 2 I am least confident of are Freo (normally Haselby but really nobody else to tag except Headland or Bell) and Hawthorn because Hodge also plays forward back and the tag can go to Mitchell or Lewis.

As for how well they handle the tag, this evolves over time and history is really the best measure. McLean showed last year he struggles with it, Cooney, Foley, Thompson and Stanton are learning to deal with it, Kerr, Goodes and DalSanto are currently struggling whilst Headland is unknown.

The others can be based on their history as they have been consistently tagged over previous years.

Absolutely! :thumbsu: Were being r*ped by injuries, but the positive side is getting a look at these kids. I hadn't planned on it, but I'm tempted to go along to the Dome on Sunday and watch 'em.

Hislop ($163,100 CTR) also named in the 18, plus Bellchambers ($83,500 RCK) & Neagle ($91,200 BAC/FWD) named on an extended bench! Laycock's OUT, so you'd imagine he'll also play.

This round's in's have thrown a refreshing light onto prospects at the rookie end of the market! :thumbsu:

  • David Myers (ESS) $103,500 BAC/CTR
  • Darcy Daniher (ESS) $83,500 FWD
  • Jarrod Atkinson (ESS) $72,600 BCK
  • David Ellard (CAR) $72,600 FWD
  • James Sellar (ADE) $83,500 FWD
  • Josh Smith (KAN) $83,500 FWD (Another Kangaroo rookie anyone??)
  • Callan Ward (WBD - $83,500 BCK/CTR) (Ext Bench)
  • Tiller (WBD) - $152,000 FWD (Ext Bench)
  • Nick Lower (PTA) $83,500 BAC (Ext bench)
  • Paul Stewart
(PTA) $111,900 FWD (Ext bench)

Will also be keeping an eye on McNamara (WCE. $124,700 CTR), back for his 2nd game of '08. He was hot on my radar at the start of the year, as I suspect he was for a lot of you.

Great to see SDT named at CHB. :thumbsu: Pfieffer's omission on top of Chad's injury looked like I'd have to trade or cop a zero, but up pops Albert Proud for his 3rd game of the season... named on the ball, after a few crackers for Suncoast! :thumbsu: Giddyup! :D
