The real story yesterday was not Karmichael Hunt's defection from the NRL to the AFL but Andrew Demetriou stating that the next three drafts will involve heavy concessions to the Gold Coast and western Sydney clubs.

No Pure Draft until 2013: Demetriou

By Louis White

7:13 PM Wed 29 July, 2009

LEAGUE chief executive Andrew Demetriou confirmed that it would take until 2013 before there was a draft bereft of concessions for the Gold Coast or western Sydney clubs.

Speaking from the new AFL and cricket facilities at Blacktown Olympic Park on Wednesday, Demetriou reiterated that both franchises needed those allowances to succeed and that other AFL club representatives had supported the plans.

"The lists committee that got together to help establish the formation of the Gold Coast football club have already met three times regarding the western Sydney football club and will meet again shortly," he said.

"They are going through the sorts of things that will again allow draft concessions for the club.

"The next draft and the draft after will be affected. We probably won’t see a pure draft until 2013. There will probably be other mechanisms that will allow this club (western Sydney) to be formed."

Now, this I think leads to a bit of a dilemma. Like all supporters, I want the Eagles to win every game they play, but saying that, with very limited draft choices available for the next three years, would it be bad thing to lose the remaining five games, receive either picks one and three or two and four, depending on where we finish, and start winning more games next year?

I mean we could have three picks in the top 22 in this year's draft. It is a dilemma and I must admit I constantly change my mind on the subject.

In reality, they should go back to zoning and therefore eliminate the draft once and for all so there would be no tanking debate.

The fact that we will be lucky to see a top 20 draft pick even if we finish bottom 4 for the next 4 years should definately push us to tank the crap out of the next 5 games.

Considering GC takes 12 underage guys this year plus about the first 10 or so in the actual draft next year. WSYD will have access to similar concessions meaning those that are bottoming out over the next few years will be in real trouble. Your first pick will essentially be worth a normal pick 20.

The Eagles should be starting their move back up the ladder next year and already this year our performances were much improved on last year. An extra top5 pick means we can worry less about next years stocks.

Im glad your on board B&G, sure wanting your team to win at all costs is noble but people dont understand the repercussions of not obtaining a PP. In any other year if we got pick 5 this year and 8,9,10 next year we would still net some very handy players and be on our way. Unfortunately after this draft in 2009 its going to be 2013 untill our first round pick actually means what its worth in any other year.

We have an oppertunity to fast track our recruiting and not have to deal with the next few drafts and it doesnt hinge on loosing 5 games it hinges on loosing one mabye two that we would be good enough on paper to win.

i dont care what any one says..all the media ive read, and the coaches+clubs comments and counterclaims re tanking - SOMETHING DOESNT ADD UP - given the quality of opposition the eagles have nearly stolen a game from..and then just all skills and flow gone from one week to the next etcetcetcetc..etc..

i say the club is following a plan B, and has done especially from when it was no longer in finals contention..it may have been plan B all year, with lots of experimenting...its not a conspiracy theory..its simple logic.

and what appened to all out GF players skill levels?-whats with that-where did they go..where did the all the GF players go? (kidnapped by aliens?)(or bikie gangs?)

if we can get 3 picks from the top 20..be it no.1 or whatever, then lets tank like theres no tomorrow..it wont make any difference, because thats what the club is already doing, in its own quirky way..

in the long term, there is no real reason we should win another game. and i hate saying this but i dont want us to win another game this year.

hopefully we can start pushing towards a top 8 finish next year as any teams who bottom out in the next 3 years (north melbourne and sydney come into mind) will probably have sustained poor performances due to the GC and WS teams being handed the cream of the crop on a golden platter.

im not happy if we are tanking.

if we dont win another game for the year (i really want us to win all our games for the rest of the season!!!!), and we are tanking, ill be dissapointed:(

ill only like that we tanked at the end of the yr when we have that PP!

and say if we tank and the players arent superb. what we're gonna rely on a pick 30 to rise us from the grave? we seriously better be hoping our recruiters dont **** up, they have a good record but we have our odd **** ups over the years. lets hope 2009 isnt one of them.

Youll get over it, and then youll be one of the first to put your hand up to be player X's sponsor next year! btw Shuey went No.2 last year and Swift No.4

hope you guys get the PP, i mean id rather us get a higher pick, but always like seeing the eagles do well. the only team other then my own that i enjoy see winning.

hoping you guus trade a few of your older players off for picks aswell. you have timed your rebuild to perfection.

Would set our club up for the next decade. :)

Zoning????????????????????? May as well put cricket pitches in the centre of the oval and grassed area's around the ground for the supporters to put their blankets! The only good thing when going backwards in time is bringing your own Esky. :p

Matera will be one of them so we should be considering a good pick from the Eastern States to trade with GC17 for the son of Wally.

ie. second round pick + a player

Ryan Harwood (TAS)
An impressive inside midfielder who finished the championships with 28 clearances and averaged 21 touches, Harwood was sixth overall in Champion Data's statistical rankings.
Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL Draft

Priority pick best young WA talent ( Morabito or Lucas)

1st round pick Lewis Jetta......................yes I rate him that highly.
