NY GIANTS.
Second half Carlton showed us up, with speed, no white or foley killed is. Francis please target speed in the draft. Also need to improve our fitness greatly, we havent been running out games this year. May sound like an excuse but this has been our problem most of the year.

Keep in mind we lost Conca to a hammy, then had what, 3 other players all have ankle injuries?

Agree we shouldn't over compensate but endurance component is an important factor obviously.

I think it might be something that in terms of team balance atm we lack a little endurance.

the disappearance of midfielders in the ruck contests at the end startled me though amongst other things

Not fit enough, not fast enough.

The amount of energy we expended in the first half for only a 4 goal (or so) lead was always going to be telling.

Combine that with the early injury, and two of our runners not playing and yeah, we probably ran out of legs before 3QT.

All I can say is I hope it doesn't become a trend. FWIW, after another solid pre-season into some young legs, I don't think it will be.

Look at our team versus last week.

No White (injured).
No Foley (dropped).
No Conca (injured first quarter).

That's a lot of run and spread gone. You leave too much to too few after this and it's no wonder they ran out of legs....

Fitness may be an issue but only because our game style is flawed.

1. Richmond relies on run and spread uncontested footy
2. This works exceedingly well against poor opposition as most pushes forward result in goals
3. Good teams repel many attacks and return the ball quickly after long kicks to contests (Richmonds preferred approach)
4. Richmonds run and carry means the whole team pushes forward at warp speed (losing their opponents)
5. Good teams then move the ball with absolute ease with the entire Richmond team chasing all the way back up the ground (always 1+ men behind) and oppositions get easy goals.
6. Richmond players get progressively more tired through the game, magnifying the issue
6. Good teams also force turnovers in the middle of the ground. See #5 Easy goals.
7. In the first half of games (even against weaker teams) Richmond can run back quickly and in many cases stop much of the easy ball movement
8. Richmonds backline is strong when the ball is delayed in entering the defensive 50 (often in 1st half)

Anyone brave enough to watch the 2nd half from today will see this repeated 15-20 times. Previous weeks will see the same, even against teams like GWS where a huge lead was only moderately improved upon in the second half.

So imo the issue is too much offence across the team moving forward resulting in pathetically easy rebound goals. Mick essentially loaded the backline in the first half to wait out the Tigers stamina and then smashed us in the second half where they were only behind by 4 goals at HT. So to the other coaches, drop a man back in the first half and then throw 2-3 fast run and carry types in your backline in the second half and pow, you should win most games against Richmond.

I've also noticed another smaller trend in Richmond structure, in the first half they switch the ball quite a bit (not as much as I would like though) and in 2nd halfs they almost always just pass the ball up one side of the ground, with tiring players meaning lack of options forces a long kick to a contest.

Anyway I'm proud of the Tigers this year but it is truly becoming groundhog day watching them against decent opposition......

Martin needs to up his second half performances through improved enduro and or shift to half forward

We also need an extra in and under type, too many players like Martin/Grigg standing on the outside. Missed Foley and next year will lose Tuck's clearances as well!
