Opinion Non-Crows AFL 13: Offseason

The early seasons starting in February were fine. Two months of games, eight teams playing each other once, wrapped up by the early rounds of the men's.

It was the new thing back then, free entry etc.

The competition is at an interesting crossroads IMO. You cant keep having 12 round seasons but at the same time, a longer season means more crossover, and more ordinary fixtures.

I have a female friend who is ‘sports mad’. More into football than me and most on this forum (seriously) but also into Rugby, Cricket, NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL, EPL, and literally anything else on tv. She is watching sport 24/7.

When I asked her if she was into AFLW she was almost ashamed to say she didn’t care about it. Told me it was due to footy fatigue and the skill level being poor.

Thats anecdotal evidence sure, but if you can’t get the most footy mad and sport mad female fan around into your game, it’s never going to work.

I still think the league has a responsibility to provide a pathway for women etc but if anyone thinks it’s ever going to pay for itself they are delusional.

You can't argue with the premise though. Women won't watch this. And men will only watch this if there's a possibility of a wardrobe malfunction or they're dressed like the LFL players.

You need evidence? It's called reality. Start living in it.

Someone, somewhere, is going to burn a lot of money on this. I just don't know who yet, but I'm suspecting the clubs involved and their members won't escape unscathed.

Political correctness is expensive, and we've reached the apex of freakshow absurdity in this country where it now overrides even basic free market principles.

Nobody will be interested in this beyond the initial novelty. The standard will be lower than the U18 boys competition.

I highly doubt the AFL has deliberately torpedoed it. The pressure exerted for it to replicate the men’s in terms of timing and earnings was extreme. And now those people are complaining that the AFLW stuffed up and that’s why it’s losing tens of millions annually. The girlpower movement will potentially kill it.

I just dont think a summer series is overly fair on the players, nor would it improve the standard or gather increase in viewership.

Disagree on the viewership, as others have mentioned, early in the year you just want to watch any footy. At the end of the men's season you've had enough. Standard will change the same regardless of the time of year but it's a fair way off currently

Realistically they expanded the AFLW too early, it needed a full decade with just the initial 8 clubs, to see if it could develop and be a great product worthy of investing more in.

AFL is an extremely difficult game. They just jumped the gun early when clubs who originally missed out thought they were gonna miss out on making money as it brought in new members and different merch to sell.

NRLW, Cricket and Soccer their women's version all are great viewing and competitive, it doesn't matter who's playing I'll sit a watch a game, with AFLW I only really watch if Adelaide are playing and even then I'm left frustrated at times because 3 of the basic football actions Kicking Handballing and Marking only the top 30% process true footballing ability and can execute. It doesn't help that there's now this juggernaut team in North who could easily go undefeated for the next 3 seasons and extremely lopsided games are common.
