What's being proposed is that this year the first 8 picks are protected (the 8 teams not playing finals), there would be no compo picks inside the top 8.

Then what would happen is from pick 9 is all the compo picks for the bottom 8 clubs get added in. So say the Power and GC finish 18th and 17th, these two compo picks would be added as picks 9 and 10, then the picks continue in reverse ladder order from then on and any compo picks for the finals teams fall naturally behind their respective picks. So if Brisbane win the flag they will have the last two picks of the first round.
Not suspicious at all that this happens in a year where there are a bunch of non-Vic band 1 free agents and the bottom 8 will contain Richmond, Essendon, Carlton, etc

Port won’t finish bottom, they were cruelled by injuries last year and there’s too many crap teams. Eagles, Bombers and Melbourne for a start. Then Richmond and Roos. I think their home ground advantage every second week will keep them ahead of the improving Roos and Tiges. I think their lowest point is 13th, but not sure they can finish much higher than that.

Too much underestimating of Port happening around here.

They will 100% match and force a trade.

Butters is worth much more than pick 1.
Whats going to be interesting will be if say the dogs cobble together a 10 year 20+ million deal for him. Thats a lot of cap Port will need to dedicate to matching...but in saying that, I think they will because the bounty in matching a bid and forcing a mega trade for Butters is just too great not to.

That’s a great point about the $20 m over 10 years. And after the st Kilda contract for NWM, it would not surprise me if the western Bulldogs offer something like that or even bigger.

It seems unclear how the matching works when you are trying to do other deals. You just have to show you can accommodate the contract but that's about it. I guess with such a long contract you can stretch it out.

Port also very recently had a mega deal put to NWM so you'd think they can shift that towards matching any Butters offer

I don't see them matching, they'll be looking to get as much draft collateral as possible for their top end father/Sons/NGA draftees Dougie Cochrane, Zachariah Young, Tevan Rodan and Louis Salopek the next 2 drafts.
Doesn't that mean though that the WILL match so they can force a trade to get said draft capital. if they don;t match, they only get a compo pick for their most valuable asset.

Your probably right but where Butters wants home to and what club, Geelong and the Dogs I think would be where he mostly wants to get to. Geelong would be my favourite at this time.
I think players from the club he wants to land at will likely be in the deal as well.

Of course they'll match, max compo from AFL is pick 8. They'll want that, a late first and a second.

Based on what Kane Cornes said yesterday on radio, they will want two top 5 picks. Not sure how either of the clubs interested in Butters will come up with that.
Likely a player/s will also be involved?

This gets said alot during trade period but clubs mostly find a way to avoid this happening.
Given the change in bid matching, they will need a 1st rounder to match bids in the 1st round and at least pick 8 if he goes in the top 2. No more junk picks for points.

Has this change you talk of been signed off on by the AFL at this time?

My understanding was it was only at the "consideration" point at this juncture.
